Only update I have is they told me the rear driveshaft is turning, so it must be in the rear axle. Last Winter I found the splines on the driver's side full float axle were rusted and pitted. I talked to Front Range, who builds the Diamond axle housing, etc. and they said it should be good. Well, maybe not so much. I haven't heard back from the shop after we talked about checking that flange. I'm going there in the morning and get my hands greasy.

Questions for the sty... Can I engage the rear locker and drive it home while the driver's side slips and pass. side is engaged? or can I weld the chromoly shaft to the end cap and drive it home? I reached out to Front Range, but haven't heard back yet. That shaft is a FF chromoly shaft cut for FJ60 length. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I'll be back in my hotel room drinking BUD! :) Not kidding........... I walked to Walmart, 3/4 mile to buy supplies and went to checkout, forgot wallet, so back to hotel. I turned around and walked back, all said 3 miles to buy beer and a salad. Jeri says it's all about choices. :hmm:

I think you can turn on the locker and remove the bad FF shaft altogether. I wouldn't leave that in. However, how do you know it isnt a pinion or ring issue?

The point of a full float axel is that the axle does not do any supporting. A semi float has forces from the tire and outer axel housing that acts like a lever and puts pressure on the 3rd member. FF is just a shaft free standing with a spline on each end. Almost like a drive shaft.

I would hope its a pinion issue and repair it before going home.
Axel issue, I don't know. How many miles are you from the farm?
I bet you have warmed the hearts of plenty of Mud members and maybe one could help with transport for some beer or a baby goat. I know I would help if I was closer.

Good info guys. Point of discussion, will having the stripped out axle shaft in the housing hurt anything? It has an axle cap on it keeping it in.

That will be a long drive home at highway speeds. Tire wear I can accept. What would you do? :)
I would lock my locker and see if it moves, if yes then I would start driving home. If no then I would pull my front third to replace the blown up rear refill with oil and drive home.

Great idea, totally forgot about doing that. That covers any type problem. I can't imagine the ring and pinion being damaged as nothing locked up or makes any noise. Either way, I'm headed home tomorrow with any luck.

Thanks guys for all the food for thought!
