Pretty common to get smoke at altitude with older Toyota diesels. My understanding is that direct injection and mechanical fuel pumps with no load are still fueling for the current RPM, but with no air introduced combustion does not happen, and that is why you see the white/blue smoke when going downhill using engine braking. Once you add air/throttle to the mix the combustion cycle happens and black smoke comes out again possibly with a soothing backfire!
So this was my very first time with the Lady at that altitude! Going up one of the passes just before the Ouray, I noticed a lot of black smoke.. thought that was ok.. black is always fashionable 🤪.. than going down it was white and she was missing a beat.. i thought i blew a head gasket or broke the 1hz… when I got to the camp (limping), I called Casey and he said not to worry someone will take a look (next day). I was pretty bumped down, but than Maggie stopped by.. of course I did not know Maggie.. but she new more about my Lady than I did.. so apparently smoke at high altitude is normal for naturally aspirated diesels, I actually later saw smoke in some of the turbo ones too.. yes all sorts of colors… back to sea level now and all is well. SAS was an awesome experience! Cheers ya’ll! 🤪

Looking forward to BBQ ing it up again and sharing my MEAT 🍖 😋 Definitely plan on bringing the tailgater out again with some coastal Red Oak. Plan on bringing a few Tri-Tips next year.

Great meeting you and your son, Thomas. Thank you for the bourbon last night. Too bad our campfire got rained out, but it was great having a cigar under the canopy with new friends and old. Safe travels my friend. Hope to see you next year.
We really enjoyed SAS! It was amazing! Next year we hope to share Polskie Kiełbasy (really from Texas 🤪) and Prażone with more! It was really awesome meeting everyone!

Sorry I did not get over to introduce myself. Love your truck and your campsite cooking has all of my favorite elements, sausage, potatoes and Octoberfest...yum. If you haven't tried the Karboctoberfest its my favorite. Cheers!

One of my fav pics, credit goes to Joe…

That was on our secret little run down to the south of Silverton! Great meeting you and your son, we hope you had a great time.

By the way, are you on Instagram? I think I put some more photos over there but didn’t know how to tag you.

For those of you who are anxious about next year's dates, please relax some. KOA is giving us access to the whole campground for registration up to a certain date that will be several months away. You won't miss out or be denied a spot at KOA Ouray as long as they are available. Something like 190+ campsites are there. Having a reservation doesn't guarantee SAS 9 registration.
Those of us who organize this annually are enjoying a little downtime and discussing plans for SAS 9.
That being said next years Solid Axle Summit will be August 4-8 2025.
There will be an announcement and hints for #9 registration on this thread sometime after the new year. So be watching as usual.
Enjoy the rest of your summer folks and keep sharing cool content from your time at SAS 8.

If you'll let a bit of a hardcore type build in I'd love to try to make it.

Come on Guys show some respect to the other runs and events . 90percent of this chit chat should be in PMs. I can say with certainty I am tired of the SAS bs talk just to keep it relevant and at the top .
