Soooo.... cruise this weekend?

I still gots to bleed brakes and dump some fuel in the tank.
Hopefully I can get timing and idle mix dialed in w/ a minimum of drama.
Are you up for a Cruise Saturday?

Sunday I need to take the @Laughingjackal 60 to go see @mcguirejohnson

If we are in town that might work, I'll have to see what we have going on if anything.

Got the carb on and connected.
Set timing, a little over 7 degrees BTDC.
Set idle to 750 RPM and then tried to set mix for lean drop.
I had a hard time getting this to work, the idle kept hunting around. Finally I realized my return spring wasn't fully returning the linkage to idle.
So I got it close and then DROVE IT! ~20 miles to an ethanol free gas station.
Yay!

Time to cruise!

I got to spend some time w/ @mcguirejohnson , he laid hands on the 40 and got the carb fully dialed in.

Here we see idle ~700 RPM, 11 degrees BTDC (5000' above sea level) and 17" of vacuum!

Nice...

Next up - vacuum hose.
@mcguirejohnson spent a lot of time chasing vacuum leaks to get the vacuum reading up to 17", so I need to replace the old vacuum line (circa 2003?) that was never a good fit...

This post contains some knowledge from our friend @cruiserdan : Need Toyota or OEM Vacuum hose size or part number - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/need-toyota-or-oem-vacuum-hose-size-or-part-number.124988/#post-1638708

The small hose is 3.5mm ID.

It is serviced in 2/3 of a meter and 1 meter lengths

2/3 meter is 90999-92003

1 meter is 90999-92004

It has pre-marked spaces where the original hose number can be applied with a ballpoint pen.

I also found these p/ns for the 6mm and 8mm factory hose: Bulk Vacuum Hose? (+ FZ Vacuum System Diagram) - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/bulk-vacuum-hose-fz-vacuum-system-diagram.1081570/#post-13429281

95333-06100 is 6mm fuel hose in 100cm length and 95333-08100 is 8mm fuel hose in 100cm length
but
95337 says GECO, so I don't know if they are the same material, GECO probably meaning epichlorohydrin, ethylene oxide, and allyl glycidyl ether. But Gasoline is gasoline, right? So the hose will probably be fine. Maybe beno knows the key to the puzzle?

This brings up the topic of where to buy bulk hose from different sources.

3.5mm ID is close to 1/8" ID, so...

I like Continental product, but Summit doesn't look to have 1/8" ID: Continental Vacuum and Windshield Wiper Hoses - Free Shipping on Orders Over $99 at Summit Racing - https://www.summitracing.com/search/part-type/hoses-miscellaneous/product-line/continental-vacuum-and-windshield-wiper-hoses

Buyer beware: Amazon product ASIN B01AUST6II
Not sure if these guys will sell in bulk. I did get some of this for an e46 project: BMW Black Vacuum Hose (5 Meters) - CRP 51731257971-5 - https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-vacuum-line-1-meter-11727545323-1

These guys have some 3.5mm ID hose:

Last thought, Gates says they make hose for a 3mm nipple, and available at O'Reilly:

Closing thoughts for the morning...

There is still a random "clatter" sound when the engine is running. It is intermittent. Intermittent issues are always fun. My esteemed colleague @mcguirejohnson feels that it is valvetrain related. We set valve lash very carefully ~a month ago.

I feel like this could be valvetrain related. To me this means I either have an issue with the rockers, or the lifters, eh? A '78 would have bushings in the rockers I believe.

Redline sells replacement bushings for rockers - these look nice: F/2F Engine Rocker Arm Bushings - Red Line Land Cruisers - https://redlinelandcruisers.com/shop/engine/top-end/f-2f-engine-rocker-arm-bushings/

I also saw these comments from @FJ40Jim :

The later rocker arms (on the right in pic) are cast steel, without a bronze bushing. They are lighter, stronger, quieter. Best of all, they finally got the metallurgy right, so even without a bushing inside, they don't seem to wear.

Get a used later model rocker assembly and pushrods, install on early 2F, enjoy the quieter & more accurate valve train.

I don't have a good one for sale ATM, but post in the classifieds. Somebody's gonna have the all steel rockers & pushrods in a late 2F with cracked head.
Yes, they can be interchanged. No difference in rocker ratio. The only catch is the pushrods change, because the adjuster "ball" gets smaller and the pushrods cup gets smaller in 198x?.

Last, last thought for the day on adjusting valve lash:

When are you gonna get new tires? Radial mud terrains must be super old…

They are! I thought I would wait for prices to hit their highest levels - this should be the year!

Yeah I feel you. My old tires are old enough to drive. Just bought new ones last night using simpletire.com. Came out to be a tire and a half cheaper than discount, so we will see.
