Thanks for posting this, you saved me money!

I got a CEL today with ruff idle/acceleration (124K miles on the odometer), thought it was MAF and after cleaning no change. Turns out it was my coil #6, got a new one from Autozone for $80 (the part did say Toyota/Denso so I assume its the same as OEM), took about 10min to change and problem solved...

Why is this not a sticky?

Glad it helped you. Please pay back the board by developing a similarly useful thread or write up. :D

It's posted in the FAQ - https://forum.ih8mud.com/100-series-cruisers/185465-rough-idle-sputtering-cel-misfire-coil-pack-problems.html

We need to remember to pad the count on quality threads to at least five so they'll be picked up in searches using the the default settings.

I hadn't noticed that default searches were set to 5 posts, that does not make sense, it should be 1. The more important parameter is number of views.

I'd like to add my experience to this thread.

About 6 months after I purchased my 2000, I started to have the same misfire issues on cylinder #2. After reading multiple threads here & checking codes, I replaced the coil pack, wires & plugs. A few months later, the same symptoms & codes for #2 re-surfaced so I replaced the coil pack again only to have it all act up again about a week or 2 later.

I proceeded to start taking everything apart to check the injectors. They all tested within spec. One thing I noticed was that all of the injector connectors were a pain to get off...except the #2 connector. I buttoned everything back up, making sure the the injector connectors clicked shut. It's over 2 years later and haven't had a miss since. So if you continue to have problems, check that your injector connectors are fully engaged.

The PO had all of his work done at a "Toyota Specialist" in Denver & I suspect that someone was in a hurry when putting everything back together after replacing the starter.

Great compilation thread, NMuzj100. Interesting post, FJXX. My #5 cylinder is misfiring so I will begin with the injector connector.

Just a reminder, you can remove the coilpack from the cylinder that is throwing the code to an adjacent cylinder and swap the coil packs. After restarting, if the misfire code moves with the coilpack, you can then confirm that the particular coilpack is bad.

This is a good way to confirm your diagnosis before throwing $100 at the problem. In 180k miles on my rig, I've had three go bad.

Lost my first coil pack (#6) yesterday at 248,300. Been carrying a spare since CM 2009. Handy little bugger to have in stock.

Cylinder 3

Why would a cylinder 3 for example coil fail 2 times? Unlucky or is there a bigger issue?

Thanlks

I have had 3 failures on my #5 coil in 140k miles. Ironically, only that cylinder?

Well, gang, just a thank you once again for the wealth of knowledge on this forum. I had a bunch of these symptoms on my '99 LC (mostly stock, only 120k miles) - rough idle, loss of power, and a flashing check engine light under certain conditions (seemed to be slightly higher torque/RPM, like trying to accelerate on the highway). Interestingly enough, it never set a code permanently, so I had to get my OBD to scan while I was driving and the CEL was flashing. First time, I read cylinder 2 and 5 misfire (uh-oh), second time was just cylinder 2 - P0302. So, $60 later from AutohausAZ, I popped in a new Denso coil pack and now she runs like a top (also picked up a spare just in case). Found the problem quickly and correctly, saved huge $$ rather than going to the mechanic, and my wife thinks I'm brilliant. Thanks, Mudders!!

Is this problem a function of age/mileage? From reading all these threads I don't find any consistent cause? Any years seem to have the coil pack failure more often then another? Great thread should be a sticky!

Have replaced 5 on my 260k mile '99. First one was just before 200K, last one was over 260k. Its probably just service life exceeded in this case.
Best thing to do it to always have a $60 Denso coilpack on the shelf or in the box if you are traveling. Quick and easy recovery.
Worst thing you can do is buy non-Denso coilpacks. I did it once and it failed in less than a year.

Just getting ready to replace #2 again. Pretty sure I did this one two years ago with a non-OEM part. Should I start using Desco as stated above?

YES.

First one went out today at 183xxx miles. Threw a P0307 code- #7 cylinder. I'll fix it tomorrow. Thanks MUD!! I was worried that it might have been the EGR and big $$$. Ned
