Rhino lining the body of a 60

Thanks guys. Im really happy with how the body came out.

The smooth durabak was way more of a pain than i expected though. I think you really need to spray the smooth because it hard to get a good finish with just a paintbrush and roller.

The textured durabak was really easy to apply with the foam roller and a paintbrush. I did three coats of the textured.

Before i put the grill back on i want to try to sand it and get a better finish. Still kinda undecided on how to attack this so i wont have a completely finished picture for a day or two.

Also for 62 owners the toyota letters on the grill are not removable like the 60s are

Easy workaround though. Get some wide blue tape. Tape the logo, then use a sharpe x-acto knife and cut the blue tape away from the outside of the toyota letters. You'll end up with tape just on the letters, nowhere else. Looks like it would be very tedious, actually goes pretty fast.

looks good tom. will you just chop the back end off yours so I can do this and not look like i'm copying you?

hahaha fxxxin poser. we cant have two blue cruisers in the driveway with black and blue paintjobs.

did i tell you blaine won second at the mud bog? it was sick but it sounds like he might go black and blue with his yota too.

im going to get some more sandpaper tomorrow and hopefully will have the grill mounted before i work.

and btw... im sooo stoked about how good the body looks! all day at work i kept looking out the window thinking how awesome it looks sitting across the street.

Calling All Bedlined 60 Series Owners

I'd like to see good photos of the following after one good summer's worth of UV exposure (exterior):

Herculiner
Durabak (rough and smooth)
Line-X
Rhinoliner
Any others...

mine is the herculiner and it has been on for two years now. IF it gets a little faded I go over it with a couple of spray cans of truck bed liner from kragen or pep boys. It looks new again.

Just out of curiousity, why did you do the front fender like that and not like pretty much everyone else does it?

I really like that line, I think that is how I am going to finish mine after I cut the rear quarters.

That looks sweet!

nice looking Cruiser Cali, not a big fan of rhino liner on body panels though, looks like dookey. Never understood the fascination. Guess Im getting too old....:o

x2.
I'm thinking of doing the same thing. My front fenders and quarter panels have lots of rock chips that are starting to rust.

Lots of bedliner exterior shots floating around, but few say what product they used and how old it is in those photos. Kind of important info for those of us trying to decide on a product. Without photos, I think the recommendations/experiences are biased and not particularly useful.

Because I didn't want it to look like everyone else's. Preference too I guess. I like the way mine looks better verses going all the way up. It is a little too much.

I thought I said it in post #128. Herculiner and it has been on for two years (or longer) It holds up really well. It was really easy too. I taped everything off with the blue painters tape. Took some 80 grit sandpaper and ruffed up the work area. cleaned it with laquer thinner then started rolling it on. Then I took a few cans of the spray on bedliner, which gave it a nice even coat. hope that helps. do you need a closeup shot?

BTW thanks to those who said they liked it. It is always nerve racking trying something a little different. You are never sure how it is going to look or work it is all done.

More pics please

A close up would be great. I to like they lines on your rig. The chips on mine go higher than that so I'll have to go a little higher.

If any one has a close up of DuraBak that would really help me out. I had that on the inside tub of my 40. It held up well but faded when I had the top off.

An update on a full summer's exposure on my DIY, spray-on, 2-part epoxy, tinted, Rattleguard bedliner I linked to on previous page...
No reason to post up an 'after' shot, as the bedliner looks 100% identical to the day it fully cured. No appreciable color change in an AZ summer.

Someone also asked about how to get it off once sprayed? Well I welded closed my cut rear quarters and had to remove 1" strip of bedliner. A good long time spent w/ a coarse wire cup and angle grinder did the trick. It put up a good fight, so not a fun proposition to do a large area, but very doable.

Can you run the rhino lining, or whatever you decide to use, along the body over these rust bumps and help prevent them from spreading? Would you have to get up under the wheelwell to prevent moisture from continually getting up behind the paint?

Can you send me a pic of the front so I can see the line you followed?

I would take care of the rust before you put anything over it. I herculined mine last weekend but took the higher line. With a built in bug guard. There are pictures on here in a recent thread titled "herculiner weekend"
