Ok, everybody keeps giving us the same number for the Magna Y, and there are 800 exhaust threads to search. Can we please get the numbers for the second cat and tail pipe, including resonator?

I have a 97 80, and according to the Magnaflow site, you will want the 23120 part, which includes the Y pipe and 1 catalytic converter. You will need a second one too, which iis part #23622. If you are replacing the whole exhaust, you will need an exhaust store to fab the rest of the parts, but one thing I don't know, since I have not done this yet, is whether you will need a resonator after this or if you can get away without one. If you do need one, what have others used?

You do not have to have a resonator.

If its too loud and you wish for one Vibrant has been a popular option. I have one in the basement waiting

Any disadvantage (hot floor boards..etc) to running the exhaust over the frame vs under as in stock configuration? My rig is primarily a family hauler, however I do plan to do some light wheeling.

You just named the primary disadvantage. However for a light family wheeler, I'm not sure it would be worth the trouble to change the configuration.

I just broke all my exhaust hangers and bent the crap out of my y-pipe by backing up while the pipe that crosses under the frame was hung up on a rock, so I can see the merit!

Hi team,

I will highly recommend you to go 3 inch.
I took the car to a shop and they told me that the best tubing is made of Aluminized iron
Check my post:

HDJ80/1HDT 3 Inches Exhaust / Magnaflow

I installed a 3 inch magnaflow silencer, the best sound you will ever hear.
You will STOP using your horn with this exhaust, just few BANG BANG! on the accelerator and everyone will notice it.

Here is my video:

Just get the 93-94 heat shield. I have no floorboard heat issues even with the turbo

That heat shield has been NLA front Toyota for several years. Finding good clean used ones is getting harder to do. I have duplicated this shield by cutting up a 2' section of 6" stovepipe and bending it by hand then drilling it to fit the existing holes for the OEM unit. Big improvement according to my wife. I also doubled the first and second OEM shields with some creative hardware. Also a big improvement according to the wife.

So I had my system replaced today... went with the MagnaFlow 23120, into a straight pipe (2nd Cat Delete) and then into a store bought muffler and back into the stock tail section and resonator. I went underneath the frame which turned out to be a mistake. Although the welder said he would keep it tight and improve the layout of the system, the section from the Y-pipe to the muffler ended being up about 1.5" lower than stock configuration AND the O2 sensor was repositioned and welded facing forward with the cable exposed and out in the open. It will definitely get snagged on something off-road.

To add insult to injury, my check engine light came on after a few miles of driving due to the removal of the second cat. I was under the impression that no codes would flash with the removal of the second cat. Anyone have any experience with this?

Moral of the story - retain both catalytic converters and make sure you express to the installer that the system needs to be completely tucked away and protected from potential damage.

MagnaFlow 23120 - $290.00 (amazon)
Muffler, Pipe, Labor - $427.00

I know this is an old thread, but the fact that CA and some other states are tightening down on emissions makes it still relevant (and chock-full of useful info)

MagnaFlow now has two different y-pipe/cats, one being 49-state and the other being CARB (CA). Aside from the metal in the cat, is there any difference? $300 is a big price gap between the two. You can get a CARB weld-in cat for far less than the difference.

49-state: 23120 Y-Pipe/Cat ($657)
CARB: 447103 Y-Pipe/Cat ($953)

Next question...is there any difference in pipe diameter between the MagnaFlow and stock on the y-pipe? There are many other choices (Catco, PaceSetter, AP, walker) who also sell CARB y-pipe/cats for the FJ80 for a lot less. I'm wondering if there is a performance difference or just marketing and perhaps quality of workmanship.
