What a good looking truck and like the many new parts you're adding. I'm curious on what you're cleaning with Lye. I did not know what it was when reading the above post and googled it. That's some really strong stuff

I used to use it to strip anodizing off aluminum, super strong stuff, works great for cleaning drainage pipes too

Correct, it gets the thin layer of anodizing off the aluminum trim. This gives you virgin aluminum that should polish up easily. Shouldn't soak it for more than 10 or 15 minutes.

Trim. We started working on all the trim of the truck. I think I got a process figured out to get it buffed up to at least a presentable shine. I had planned to use some lye to eat off the anodized surface and then polish up the trim. I soaked a test piece and noticed that there wasn't much black residue coming off. This black residue is the aluminum oxide layer. I concluded that the parts were never anodized from the factory, or it has all worn off over the years. To test my theory I hit a a second piece on the buffing wheel only(brown and white polishing compounds). It looked quite good, so I decided to skip the lye all together.

It's subtle, but the polished is on the right.

The process should be a bunch faster now since I don't have to soak each part individually.

My wife sanded and prepped the rear door window dividers for some trim black. They had been pretty sun worn after 30 years. They came out well.

Got another order coming this week which should have all the plastic grommets we need to start putting the more interesting pieces on.

I hope everyone had a good Memorial Day Weekend. No BBQs for us, or road trips for us. Three full days of assembly for us. A bunch of parts finally came in so we can start putting some polished, painted or refurbished parts on the fresh paint.

While my wife was working on a different project (We will see it below) I decided to tackle the front emblem. I think it's not surprising that we're spending a pretty penny on the finishing of this Land Cruiser, but like anybody I enjoy saving a little money. The front Toyota emblem is a bit of an enigma. You could go buy a new one for over 100 dollars which will just get stone chipped and messed up. I decided to give ours a refresher. I think it turned out alright. First thing I did was sand the letters flat and then painted the whole emblem white and started masking off the letters.

Finished off the letters

34794934452_7c3fa82271_b.jpg

Put a good couple coats of trim black over it all and then pealed off the masking

34183144863_030eb8cd53_b.jpg

It turned out pretty good. Maybe a little brush work to make it real nice, but from 3 feet it looks pretty solid.

So my wife is awesome. Sorry boys, she doesn't have any sisters. We bought some Stinger sound deadening material from amazon and new carpet felt from SOR. I think you guys know where this is going. While I was messing around in the garage polishing aluminum and painting parts she was working hard.

Cleaning 30 years worth of sand and dirt out of the carpet

After getting the truck emptied out and cleaned up we decided to do something fun.

The reproduction grill needed a little work to fit, but it's a quality piece none the less. New turn signal lenses and gaskets. Was great to see the front of the truck come together.

Day Two of Memorial Day weekend. Lets talk about sloppy shift selectors. We all hate them, but lets face it, as we age things don't feel quite as tight or as stiff as they used to. Well there is a solution for these problems. It's small, blue and lasts a long time. I'm talking about bushings obviously.

34115697174_b5fe5f4aa8_b.jpg

What was left of the original bushings was a masticate mess in the rotating assembly. I cleaned all that out and started installing the new ones.

What a difference. Real easy to do and makes selecting gears so much easier.

I went ahead and got the rear sprayer working again. If you remember I discovered that the line was broken near the lift back.

34958774085_43f1e81e8e_b.jpg

I cut the line leaving about a foot on the pump and let the fluid drain out of the tail light opening and into a jar I had. The line was stuck as I expected so I took some bailing wire and pushed it into the open end of the tubing as far as it would go. I also pulled the rear dome switch and you can see the line back there and you can push it around with a long screw driver or something.

34115691984_a3274d74f6_b.jpg

The bailing wire gave the tube some rigidity and the extra access from inside the truck made it so I could work it loose. Once it started to move freely I pushed the check valve into the old line facing the correct direction. This allowed me to plug the new line into it and pull it through. Speaking of line, the air line from the pet store for aquariums is perfect. I sprung for the silicone version since I wasn't sure what the clear stuff was made of or how long it would last.

34571488690_054142a2a5_b.jpg

It comes in 8ft and 25ft lengths. It's a good thing I got 25, I have a feeling that 8ft would too short. From there it was a simple task of threading it through and remembering to put the check valve in.

Outstanding so far. Definitely fun to watch it come back to life! What is the part number for the little rubber bumper on the lower portion of the door?

It was 90541-09061 and has been replaced by 90541-09006. There are 2 per front door (I'm sure you know that).

Went down to ARB HQ in Auburn Washington yesterday to pick up the latest addition to our build.

34646369110_4e8eaf0f68_b.jpg

They had been out of stock on the 60 series bullbars for quite a while and we got our name on the waiting list for the next container.

34869877272_a945a21a09_b.jpg

Couldn't help but just go ahead and install it last night without even changing out of our office clothes.

Question: Do you ARB Bullbar guys attach the lamps on the front to the indicators or to the running lights? Also, what height do you put the bar to? I started with 1" lift which is pictured above, but after looking at it for a few minutes we moved it down to the Standard height. I think I like it better there. It BARELY touches one of the headlight sprayers but I think I can live with it.

Another solid weekend of work. My wife really does keep things motivated and thank God for that. Sometimes we hit some snags and it's difficult to figure stuff out. Two heads are better than one, and four hands sure are better than 2.

34940001162_b5b752b966_b.jpg

Work began with a target of finishing up the cargo area back to stock. First thing was to tackle these beat up and rusty carpet trim clamps and the rust riddled seat.

34973983341_55bcf74ed6_b.jpg

I wasn't excited about undoing the hog rings or having to re-wrap the seat. So I just used my friend blue painters tape.

34940601682_f83af6d960_b.jpg

Then some duplicolor "Rust Fix" (which sounds a bit funny to say).

34718346910_b7569e6557_b.jpg

I put some trim black on the back of the seat and on the trim pieces and it all turned out pretty good. Bought some standard auto carpet from a carpet store which my wife cut to fit and everything buttoned up just fine.

35065460786_d345ccbdd6_b.jpg

Cut some flaps in there for the tie downs. I think I'll be taking the tie downs out though to build the structure for my fridge slider and storage area.

It never ceases to amaze me what 5 minutes in the wash basin and some good scrubbing will do to some of these trim pieces. The materials really are durable.

Speaking of good materials. This pinch weld trim from @reevesci at Trait Tailor is perfect.

I'm a stickler for all these trim pieces being cinched down and tight. The old factory pinch weld trim gasket was tired and didn't grasp all these pieces well anymore. This new stuff is great, goes on easily enough but really gives a good finish to all the pieces that come together on this section of the truck.

I forgot to order the apron seals with my last order. I'll be doing that soon when I get around to the lift.

If anyone has an NOS License Plate light panel. I'm entertaining purchasing one. It's the one part of the build that is a bit lack luster. Looks good from 6 feet, but its getting rusty.

Our original dashpad has three giant cracks running through it so I have another one on order. Should be here Wednesday.

After the glass guy gets here tomorrow and maybe another visit from him later. It's actually a truck again. Then the modification and outfitting starts.

Great job! I actually have a new OEM license plate light assembly that I need to sell (I accidentally received an extra one in a order from Cruiser World). PM me if interested. :)
Maarten asked me to sell it here for him in the states instead of shipping it back to him in the EU.

If that doesn't work out, there is always the 24v unit which is still avail from Toyota.

81270-95A09, swap out the 24v bulbs and put 12v units in. Should be able to swipe that from amayama.com

Great progress, I see updates on IG as well, really enjoy the attention to detail, my list of parts when I order keeps growing.

Yup, 24v version just swap the bulbs. Same exact units.

Smart. Never crossed my mind to go out and look for the 24v version. It's actually a little crazy that Toyota even carries a separate part number for the two assemblies when the only difference is the bulbs. Learn something new everyday I guess.
