Rear quarter panel armor? (Idea)

yah - was thinking of Shawn's truck with his 'armour' cladding

I really like the diamond plate quarter panels after seeing them on "cool" CJs and Broncos as a kid. I had plans to do this to do something like this to my already crumpled quarters to prevent any more shopping cart damage at the mall.

When searching for this diamond plate, this is the only 80 I see. Does everyone hate doing this?
Yes.

The only other rig that has diamond 1/4 panels is @Wrench 's rig.

Thing is most guys don't wheel the 80 in places where you need quarter panel protection like that. Kinda pointless to run that on a rig used for mild trails and wide open dirt roads. Diamond plate may not be pretty, but I wouldn't mind running those panels. As mentioned earlier, the contour of the 80 makes it hard to get plate to follow the body lines. So, very small market and an expensive manufacturing process means no vendor will touch it.

This would have solved both of those problems, but of course, it's stupid! The kit is ~$500.

The '80 has much more curve than the Cherocar, forming the compound curves would make them expensive.
What bumper kit is that?

I indeed like the minimalist approach and actually like the naked look of the rear. I'm not an overlander, and thus don't want the overlander look.

Literally every rig pictured in this thread has a rear bumper. Except for the scooter.

Think maybe there's some reason for that?

4x4 labs DIY bumper kits are the sleekest, I made a slight change in mine and welded in the side pipe to the very corner to add to the protection of the panel under the tail light. However if you have a carrier, this would not work because it welds where the spindle should go.

@NLXTACY or @reevesci do you have any intrest in maybe making some type of rub rail rear quarter panel protection?

Even a rub rail like this fj60.

The problem with panels like the ones shown in your post is that they may not do much in the event of a solid hit, because a) they're relatively thin and b) they're not solidly attached to something that will not yield: the frame. What they may do is give a middling hit the ability to rip the bolt holes bigger, and a major hit the leverage to bash in or tear off the whole corner. A good bumper wing/loop will deflect, moving the whole vehicle if you hit, say, a rock outcropping. Panels ain't gonna do that. Sorry.

I don't think you guys get what he was saying. A rear bumper would do nothing to protect the fat rear quarter panels on the 80 which are easy to dent. Quarter panel armor like they have for the XJs would be sweet, I'd totally buy it. But nobody makes anything like that.

This is what @AMMO did

Yeah, but @AMMO Is a toolbag (hey buddy) and Shawn quarter panels looked like Picasso had a seizure before he covered them up, real abstract looking. However, I was going to suggest both of those examples so good job.

Yeah, scooter already has too much weight and overhang in the rear with the 400lb chick riding it. It was the manufacturer's way of extending battery life by cutting weight.

The ones on that 60 look beefy(read: heavy). They look great. Maybe starting with making replacement actual sheetmetal so that once the armor gets ruined you can bring it back to its former glory if you retire it from trail duty? I like that bumper wrap around idea for the hardcore stuff though, it makes sense on those rigs to avoid gouging the sheetmetal and possibly hanging up. Also keeps you from busting tailights constantly because they are protected or more stout. Just dont see the point of drilling holes in the sheetmetal to avoid minor bumps and scrapes. Let me avoid damage by inflicting damage...

Diamond plate does nothing to protect you, but it does trap water and the bolts used to attach it rust everything out.

Here is mine I built few years back. Works amazing
