Rear FJ60 Air Lift / Boss Air Bag Install

FWIW, I've been running airbags on the rear of my BJ60 since about 1993. First were a set of used Firestone ride-rites that I cobbled mounts together for, they sat on the spring (original saggy units), just forward (I think) of the axle, and had an open topped H riser that slid on the frame. I was going to bolt it to the frame, but it just self aligned and never moved after that.... They lasted till 2006, until one failed as one edge chaffed right through the cords and everything. I then put in a set of ironman heavy duty springs front and rear (the legendary ultra cheap sets off ebay from a suspension shop selling off old stock) and ran for a couple of years with no bags. In 2008 I replaced the entire frame (rear rot) with an 84 FJ frame in pristine shape. Ran it without bags for a year or two, then bought a set of Aussie Boss bags from the distributor in Chilliwack BC. An easy install with the supplies brackets pre-made for a 60! So nice! As I did with the earlier firestones, I just mounted a tire valve on each bag, and fill them until the truck is level and happy. No hoses, no gauge, no worries. These airbags are simple, easy peasy, and rugged as hell.

Yeah, they were in invented for you! Welcome to SLOCRUISERS
You are looking at LA09 or LA09T. The T is for up to 6" lift. They are normally built for
sitting on the axle tube using the ubolt to secure. But with the ubolt reversal kit I think maybe
look at the kit for SOA. It requires time to be created. Contact John @ Slocruisers
He was kind enough to call me back and sort out issues I had. Really good person!
They are also on ebay with good explanations and better pictures.
Hojack, here it is.

Since you’re spring over, they make a pair that has 3 sections instead of 2 like mine for lifted trucks, so keep that in mind. That may be the better option for you. The normal setup with 2 sections may not work well for you.
I’ll get some measurements later today.

Yup, that’s them. And FWIW, mine are still holding up great. I’ve put air in them several times, but a lot of has to do with temp fluctuations, not leaks. It’s no different that adjusting tire pressure in cold weather.

I had a leak problem, but it was the insert compression fittings. They get any amount of grit
in there and they seep air. There is a lot of grit in those wheel openings.
A buddy put me to that since he has run them on industrial equip
as well as travel trailers. So I pulled the ends out, trimmed them up and dabbed a small
amount of liquid thread sealant ( same as I used on the fittings for my ARB’s ).
Once it set up no more leaks.

Also got two sets from @SLOCRUISER , shipped, mounted and happy.
One set was for the 4+ ubolt flip kit on the Hj61.

But, I realised after fitting it on one side, that it's gonna be a pain to service the brakes, since it's right in the way of the inspection hole in the backing plate.
So I made the lower bracket with two plates, bolted, so I can remove the two upper and two lower bolts and remove it easily.
Also, that makes the whole setup more serviceable, and I didn't even have to loosen the ubolts on the @lcwizard kit to install it 👌

Most of the work was spent moving, wrapping and rerouting the 3" exhaust to clear the whole bag setup... And the fueltank and the spare and the shackle, and the shock and the axle housing and figuring out new exhaust mounts.

The picture shows it on the 4+ kit.

Set up looks good. I recall having to make adjustments to the hard lines
for the rear brakes. Can’t remember if I have access problems to my adjuster or not.

Well, maybe, but I think the Semi and Full Float axles have the adjuster on the same spot, just below the wheel cylinder.
So what you're saying, is that you've probably not had to deal with your brakes yet 😁
I can never get my drum off without loosening the adjuster with two thin flathead screwdrivers through that hole.
Any other methods are welcome 👌🔨🙈💨

Finally time to install the BOSS triple airbags.

First had to make sure the base would clear all the U-bolt heads on the Ruffstuff SOA Kit.

I decided to trim the heads down to have clearance for the bolt heads on the bottom side of the airbag. Portable bandsaw worked great.

Used a flap disc to clean and round the U-bolt heads.

Assembled the airbag.

We have nearly the same set up in everything.

In order to easily get the airbag in I used our forklift to lift the body weight off the axle. You can just make out one of the forks. I also decided while I was there to clean up the inner C channel. It was mostly loose old paint and some light surface rust.

I had 2 holes drilled in my bumper for my license plate that I decided to mount on my rear ladder instead. Decided to use the holes for the airline fitting to blow up the airbag.

Spray painted the inner C channel. To protect the air tubing I ran the tube through some hose for extra protection we had a work. I couldn’t do it with on piece so I used 2 and spliced them together with a heat shrink kit we use on electrical wire under water.

Inflated the bag to 60psi and had no leaks. Took the pressure back down til the body above both tires were level.
