Rattle can color that is close to OEM gray wheel color

Did this thread when I painted mine MF gray. Durable paint, slightly more brown than stock, but pretty nice: https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/328816-were-factory-steel-rims.html

By the way, Valspar is now owned by Lowe's....if they don't carry it on the shelf, they may be able to special order it for you. I special ordered mine through a local ACE hardware store who carried the Valspar line.

I've also heard rumor that there were a couple different shades of Massey-Ferguson gray.....one had more brown, the other had more blue. I think, if that's true, the more blue would be perfect.

Well, i ordered some MF Gray that won't be here until next Wednesday and going to pick up the Krylon Smoke Gray and some Battleship today……I think i will shoot all three and choose from there.

Thanks for all the input…..I really like that smoke gray in your pictures copenhagen1.

It may have been less expensive to just pick up a can or two of the $18 "stock" gray paint from Cruiser Corps ... and easier.

It would have been over $75.00 (4 cans)including shipping with Cruiser Corps......I got the MF with free shipping ($24.98 4 cans) and spent another 4 bucks at Lowes (I had a smoke gray already in the garage). I wanted extra paint for other items in that color.

If I had stuck to my original plan of just painting one wheel to see which I liked better then yes it would have been cheaper and easier….but decided a few days ago that I definitely wanted to do all 4 and some other trim items.

Now it's between the MF (which will be here Tuesday hopefully) or the Smoke Gray.

Paint on the cheap

I went with rustoleum smoke gray for 5.99 at HD, couldn't see paying $13 a can for shipping. Prime and paint, excellent gloss and durability.

Another for Rusto Smoke Grey but the others look fine too. Do what you want.
I've bought a lot of Cruiser Corps rattle cans. The match is great, but the only down side is it takes FOREVER to dry. If you do wheels with this paint, I'd wait a week before any serious handling or mounting them.

Well……I really like the smoke gray but the MF gray looked a lot better with Dune Beige. The smoke gray had a hint of blue and just didn't look as good against the Dune. (IMHO).

Here's a shot of the wheels, they still need one more coat and it's amazing how lighting makes them all look different. Hopefully some rubber later this week.

Thanks for all the input on this thread.

i like the mf grey so much, i cleaned a set of the oem white wagons up, and gave them a couple shots of the mf grey. not sure what i'm mounting on them yet 33x10.50s but i don't know if i what a set of bfg mts or another set of ats....albeit an inch wider.

Just a little tip before you spray the last coat....bend the hub cap clips back slightly (so they're not touching the rim). This will: A) let you get paint under the clips to prevent rust and B) will help with getting the hub caps on. My new ones were so tight, I couldn't get the caps on (and buggered my paint trying). My 2-cents.

Thanks for the tip…..it's in the 60's today so i may spray them tonight. i will definitely bend those tabs.

Just an FYI :) it could help some with restorations ...

...... rims were painted gray outside only from 72/73 till 7/80

Rim Colors for USA market
E-60 body color
61-67 black rims
68-72/73 gray rims
72/73 - 7/80 gray outside only
8/80-84 white wagon wheels

I just picked up a set of the black oem fj40 clip wheels and am going to do a gray rattle can spray.

My question is regarding initial prep. What did you guys do to your black oem's before you laid down the first coat?

Johhny-you the man as always as far as original setups go................!!!! You know I am all about being as original as possible, I also bought the OEM wheels and knowing that they are powdercoated black and my budget does not allow that now, I am keeping them that way. I do live in Arizona, so not too worried. If I did paint, probably MF grey............... todddos not sure what prep would be on a powdercoated suraface...very tough coating.

Just to add info for anyone searching:

I used Krylon Smoke on the recommendation of Texican who had done a disc brake conversion on an earlier restoration by CCOT.

With the new disc front, he had to replace the drum wheels with disc...the Krylon Smoke was an exact match for the CCOT-restored wheels. I can't assume that CCOT got it right to begin with, so take it for what it's worth.

Definitely some blue in smoke...

Krylon Smoke Gray certainly seems to be a close match.

But does anyone have any more insight on how to prep a set of black oem 40 wheels for a repaint??

Get some maroon Scotchbrite pads and some Dawn dishwashing liquid. Put a little soap on the pad with water and scrub the face of the wheel. This scuffs the surface and degreases. Rinse and let dry thoroughly.

Next wipe with lacquer thinner or brake cleaner if you don't have thinner. This gets all the lint and dust off.

Then lightly mist a coat on. Read the can and see how long to wait before second coat. Wait the prescribed time, then lightly mist a second coat. Wait the prescribed time again and put a really good third coat on making sure you cover completely but not so much as to cause a run.

If you want it factory correct, just paint the face, not the rest.

I am pretty sure the black coating that came on your new wheels is not powder coat. I am pretty sure it is just a real good primer. My wheels were original disc brake wheels but I only had 4 of them. This one was a brand new one when I bought it.

Good luck.
