I was 30 feet behind you when you went over that rock and to this day I have no idea how that rock hit your truck. I thought you stopped to take a picture of the pond that was off to the left.
It seems pretty likely it was a “diff kraken”that sleeps under rocks in the forest and waits for the exact right moment to reach up and crack your diff into a rock. That’s my main theory- either that or the 4runner diff bracket is a s**t design. The funny thing is, I can’t find another instance of this happening on any other 4runners, prados, gxs or tacos… so it probably was a “diff kraken”.

The truth is out there…

Thanks @JohnVee This does look like a better design than the 4R/120/150/taco front diff arrangement for casual flat open trails that may have small rocks sticking up. Can you sense my eye twitch? Rock rock rock diff diff diff diff land cruiser 4runner land cruiser. Gack gack gack… I was told this 4runner was the off road version... Hello- is this the off road version? Hello? Toyota? Hello? I was told this one could go off Road...

Re-did the front crank seal and timing cover gasket I had messed up previously. Kinda miz.

Inaugural use of the m12 fuel 3/8 ratchet and m12 fuel die grinder so that helped. Got an inch-lbs torque wrench too so I wasn’t guessing on the timing cover bolt torque.

HOT TIP: the $16 steering wheel puller from Harbor Freight is perfect for pulling the crank pulley.

Hmmm.... I've got this deal lined up for a straight across swap. My 2021 4runner for this 2014 LX570 with 45k 54k miles on it. I told the dealer I would sleep on it and check in with them tomorrow. It's very tempting. The most annoying part will be buying another set of all terrains... the amount of money I've wasted on tire changes over the last few years when swapping vehicles is mind boggling.

In addition to the LX being generally more awesome- my logic is
1) I'm going to need a third row in the next 2 years or so anyway (this was kind of an oversight when I got the 4runner and will become a problem at some point)
2) The 4runner rides pretty rough (wife complains about it every time we go out in it- the LX570 suspension is buttery smooth)
3) Wife wants memory seats (4runner doesn't have it, LX does)
4) I can take it up flag pole next month and find any weak points in the factory skids

So... Should I do it?!? @landwagon Are you sure I need a 200?

This thing makes the 4R look tiny... lol... wasn't expecting that.

Why didn't you do the swap then and there? @Diff Kraken wife will be happy and you'll be happy you're finally in a cruiser! :flipoff2:

Do it. pull off your new skids and other parts. Leave the lift, it is cheap enough. You can always go buy another 4runner, but it will be hard to find a 200 Land Cruiser.

Did you buy it yet????????????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is some amount of surface rust underneath and some corrosion on some lines that run along the bottom of the tailgate (do you know what those are?) that I want to look more closely at… also had told her I was going grocery shopping when I left home :) so it would have been a little much to bring home a new vehicle without a heads up.

It has spent its life in New York and New Jersey so there will probably be more rust than normal.

Yup- should I be scared? My thoughts are if the rust hasn't really damaged any components to go ahead and replace all the bolts and coat the thing in fluid film to stop any progression. My fear is for cats, brake lines, AHC components... So I'll take a closer look at those and have the dealer put it up on a lift and pull the "skids"

You got a grocery getter in the process of getting groceries. I don't see any problems there..
Lines at the bottom of tailgate? Beats me I've got a poor man's 200.

But if it's just surface rust shouldn't be too big of an issue. Some wire wheel rust inhibitor and fluid film will take care of those things. And if your AHC stuff ends up rusting out later on down the road that'll be the time you upgrade to a regular suspension. Seems like a win, you already have justification for a suspension mod haha

Dropped the 2F into the rolling chassis.

After doing all the work on the frame and axles I’ve decided to make everything on the engine/drive train mechanically sound but not put any effort into making it look pretty. I want to drive this thing and explore offroad trails in New Mexico before moving back to Virginia this fall.

@Diff Kraken Nick, you’re giving me truck ADHD by association 😂
Now the city of DC tryin to tax me a 10% gas gussler tax if I make the purchase! That's tough to swallow... I just paid something similar on the 4R in April... bunch of commies over here. Since that 4R tax got financed and now will basically be rolled over into this new loan, that will be about $10k in DC tax built into the car loan! Part of me wants to wait until I move back to Virginia before swapping out the 4R.

In other news, dealership finance guy was supposed to call me at 1030 to finalize the deal. He didn't call. I've called the dealer a few times today and they keep saying they'll call me back. I should probably head over there and start demanding free K02s, free carwashes for life and an extended factory warranty.

This.

This is not the time to be buying a used car. Used car prices on the whole are 31% higher year over year. I know it seems to be a good deal but I'd definitely wait to get out of DC before giving the DC treasury another $10k. What's the hold up of getting out of DC?

Also, I'd be looking in Texas for a used car. The 2004 Suburban I drove back from Houston last month is unbelievably rust free for a 18 year old vehicle.
