Installed a tailgate lock actuator on the Tacoma. Toyota part number PK3B6-35JS0 for DCSB trucks, PK3B6-35JL0 for long bed. It says it's only for 2019+ trucks but everything went together fine on my 2018 so I tihnk it'll work on all 16+ 3rd gens. It's nice not having to use the mini key from the fob to lock and unlock the tailgate. Not sure why Toyota didn't install this from the factory.

@iptman is it loud? I put one drop PopLock on my Tundra and it has a loud thud when actuated. Looked around the inter webs and it is normal. Just a little annoying.

Pretty sure I just blew the engine in the 3ed gen 4runner. Really bad rattle that coincides with engine rpm that got progressively worse with rpm and load. Oil leaking from passenger side valve cover area near the atf dipstick. It first felt a little off while driving, then a little rattle, then massive rattle. Happened right next to Kilroys as I was waiting for the light.

Time for a new engine....

You should do the opposite of every 2nd gen owner and swap your 3.4 for a 3.0

My friend swapped in a GS400 V8 into his 3rd gen. Its working well

Blower motor quit working. Found the spade connector coming out of the motor broken off way up inside. Of course, PO was a schmuck and installed an old Camaro blower assembly box on this thing. Found a brand new motor but I have to see if the squirrel cage is the right size. It looks longer than mine. Oh, and found a giant , deserted mouse or squirrels nest in the box and the prick ate some of the blades right of the squirrel cage.

I've been searching for a decent replacement 3rd gen 4runner, but the prices seemed to have jumped up lately. I was thinking that I could just swap everything over to the "new" truck, but that's kind of a pita. The 4th gen v8 limited looks tempting, and I was eyeballing tacos and tundras, but that idea of having a suburban keeps popping up in my mind. Half the price with 60-100kmi less for the price.

Going to call up a couple more mechanics to see what an engine replacement will cost, but I'm thinking that I'm probably going to sell or part out the truck. Sucks bc I got it just how I wanted it.

Anyone wanting a 3rd gen or tons of parts, make me an offer before I do something $$$.

If I had a garage, think I'd do the engine replacement myself, but no garage and little time these days.

I’ve had two 3rd gens and a 4th gen limited V8. If I were you, I wouldn’t even consider the 4th gen, and skip straight to the GX.

from what I’ve seen on T4R and the 3rd gen mafia, a replacement JDM motor is less than $1000. Labor can’t be that much more on top of that if you were to have someone do the swap for you. Ask around, get some quotes and you’ll probably find it will make sense to fix the 4Runner. You’d spend a lot more effort parting out a built truck than swapping a motor.

Agreed.

I just found another 3rd gen for a decent price at decent mileage, but it's a 6hr drive. Might check that out. I have a couple numbers to call for mechanics working on their own time, but the first couple quotes were more than another truck. Maybe a tech day engine swap! I don't have a garage though and don't want to inconvenience any willing souls like with the raffle truck project.

Found a super charged 4runner that I'll eyeball and maybe pick up. Need to learn about those specific supercharged issues that will pop up though.

I’m there with you. Pending the sale of our house and everything falling into place I was going to say tech day at my new place to drop a motor into my 2nd gen.
Let’s all converge on your townhome neighborhood and get to it. They can’t kick us all out right?

Acquiring and assembling all parts, fluids, and tools needed. Id prob do the timing kit iand valve cover gaskets while the engine is out beforehand. Would need to tow or have the truck towed out there too. New seals and whatnot where possible.

More research needed.

That’s what I thought. I’m still leaning on putting another 3.0 in my truck for simplicities sake (flame away).
But I would want to do the timing belt, water pump and valve cover gaskets while it’s all out. Also get an aftermarket manifold set that diverts it away from #6 cylinder.

Had my rear bumper stripped and powder coated by sandblast America in Manassas. This is the third item they’ve done for me and always very happy with the quality of work; definitely recommend.

The original owner had it coated in some sort of bedliner that was starting to peel off.

Think I just had a coil pack go out in the 100-series. Hoping that’s all but the more than 1 cylinder misfire per the scan Advance Auto parts did for me— results below. It had been sitting for a bit over the holidays still seems weird.

P0300 - multiple misfire
P0303 - cylinder 3 misfire
P0304 - cylinder 4 misfire
P0306 - cylinder 6 misfire

Cylinder 3 and 4 makes sense for a bad coil and sympathetic code in the matching cylinder (based on what I’ve read in the 100-series forum). The addition of a cylinder 6 has me concerned. It does follow 4 then 3 in firing order— not sure that means anything though.

Running rough and down on power but drivable-ish. Cleaning the MAF helped a bit.

Ordered two Denso coil packs and cable to get Techstream setup so I can dig in more.

mostly using this to troubleshoot:
