Power Steering Bracket Sources

I e-mailed Bill Dorry, thatnks for the tip.

So when I got to a junk yard, I just look for a Toyota 4x4 pickup from 79 to 85 and get the gear box and pump? Anything that I should know so I don't grab the wrong parts?

just get that steering gear box,the p/s pump will be useless.you want a pump from chevy(sag).the pump that i heard works really well because of the large pulley thats on it is from a volvo 840dl.make sure to get the return line fitting on the box

OK, I am ordering the brackets from Bill Dorry. Per his suggestion I ordered the pump from rockauto.com , PN# 206823. I can get a used mini-truck gear box already pulled from the Yota Yard (Denver Junk Yard) for $150. and I may need the bracket and bushing.

When I get the hose, any special specifications (length, thickness, etc.) I need to consider. I see JT Outfitters sells one for $52.

Any other good sources for the Mini-truck gear box and hose?

I decided on the mini-truck because I can do it myself and it does not require any welding.

if you use a sag p/s pump and a mini p/s box you have a problem.small one but a problem.standard and metric.jt makes hoses for this problem, its just a hose that has a metric fitting on one side to go to the box and standard on the other to go to the pump.

Opps, shawn already answered part of my question on the hose. Any other place I can get this hose or is JT Outfitters the best. Dorry recommended them, but the did not treat Ige very well.

I hear this all the time, but I wonnder what it is based on. The specs are about the same: Toyota 1050 PSI; Saginaw 1100 PSI. Not much difference in volume either. The junk yards are full of both Saginaw and Toyota PS pumps.

Thanks Charlie, the Toyota PS pump gets such a bad rap... I'm going to try it though!

A new sag pump from Napa is $60-80 (Can't remember)
A new Toyota pump is ~$400, rebuilds do NOT last.

I've changed sooooo many toyota pumps working only two years in a Land Cruiser shop.

The sag pumps can easily be modified for more pressure. Maybe Toyota can be as well, never heard of anyone doing it.

Around here there are certainly more Sag than toyo pumps in yards. I also would not want to install a used Toyota pump.

Hi All:

Geeze! $950 for a PS swap kit! And, a "mini-truck" style to boot!

"Romer," how big a set of tires you gonna run on that FJ40? Front 'locker in the plans??

The "mini-truck" PS swap is fine for light-duty/small tires on a FJ40/55, but if the rig is gonna have big tires, and/or a front locking diff it will need a stronger PS set-up.

I'd say I spent about $350 on parts to do the "Saginaw" PS swap on my FJ40 3 - 4 years ago. I did have some friends that helped me out with the swap, no doubt!

At the same time one of my 'Cruiser buddies was switching from the FACTORY PS on his '79 FJ40 to the Saginaw type PS because the factory PS could not turn the 33X12.5 inch Super Swampers on his rig, with the front ARB engaged.

Just some "food for thought" for 'yah!

Good luck with the PS swap!

I bought the kit from JT Outfitters.... it included everything except the solid-axle mini truck power steering box (cause those are hard to find) . The reason I went this way is to keep it "more Toyota", I never really liked the way Saginaw boxes mount on the frame, and they don't have much feel. The power steering setup on my 85 4Runner turns aired-down to 10 psi 35" BFG mud terrains just fine, and I have never replaced or rebuilt the PS pump (but I changed the fluid a while back) so I feel 35-37" tires with a Toyota box and Saginaw pump aught to do just fine. Now I just need to install it...

Actually you can use the sag pump and have custom lines that match the mini...if i paid better attention I woulda known he was asking for brackets not pumps  i have been kinda spacebrained recently.

I have two JT pump brackets on two different rigs. The tiny welds on the top of both of them failed. Not a huge fix for sure but a pain in the ass never the less. There are a bunch of guys who make these kinds of pump brackets. Check Mudrack, Lance Williams etc. If you do get the JT bracket just be careful about the welds that hold the tension bolt in place...

Dorry's Brackets

Check out Bill's pics above. They are really great if you have questions and the brackets look substantial and are much less scratch then the TLC junk - even if you try ebay.

I use the bracket from Classic Cruisers and a press on pulley that is made from a Toyota powersteering pump pulley with the factory keyed hub removed and mounted to the press on hub you see. I'm turning another press on hub to mount the four bolt smog pump pulley. Since I need to maintain the smog pump, I made a spacer to move the smog pump pulley to the front crank pulley. I like the fact that I can run two 17mm wide belts.

Has anyone mounted a Saginaw pump behind the front bib/grill on the frame rail? With my winch I do not think the Saginaw will fit in the usual place.

Thank you
