No, I asked her about it when she took the reservation and asked for me to mail a deposit. I got busy with work and totally forgot about it until the day before the trip. When we arrived i explained I forgot about the deposit and I offered to pay the whole amount and she said you don't pay until we bring you back! Remember, they're the only ride off the island, so there is a lot of trust!

The whole process is pretty loose, but Kari is cool and that's just how they roll down-east!

We're gonna have to talk about the noon on Thursday ferry... If I'm up and driving at 530am you know there's no way in hell I'm gonna let you sleep on the ride there. Or back.:moon:

On thing someone from our last trip did: camp overnight at the ferry site in Atlantic to catch the first ride over. I wouldn't do it with a ground tent, but if you have an RTT, then there is plenty of space to park and pop it up.

Reason I wouldn't do it with a ground tent - big sweet dogs running around: 1) you might get an earlier than desired wake up call licking your face 2) big dogs make big poop, and it is around.

Same "boat", literally. Doubt I'll be able to go Thur, Fri for sure...

Suggestion for tent stakes. cut rebar into 18 inch pieces, paint with epoxy paint, and add a piece of reflective stripe tape at the top. You can pound the heck out of them to get them in, and the reflective stripes helps ya keep all your toes during the midnight bladder evacuations.

Last time we were on CALO, the stakes held in 25-30, but the tent poles didnt....we succumbed to a cabin, and that was nice....

You want enough breeze to keep the flies off

Looks like we have plenty of interest in the Nov 20-23 (Thu-Sun) dates so those are firm dates now.

Sites 13-20 are available, as of 06/15/14, and they are close together for those that want a cabin.

If you want a cabin go ahead and rent one now. They sleep 6 people each. Or Anyone with interest in sharing a cabin should post so y'all can coordinate the rental.

got back late last night. have a good number of pics. will upload this evening.

Took the ferry over friday morning from Morris Marina. Nice people, but I think we may have been overcharged, so just be on the lookout. Ferry holds 5 cars. The ride took about 35 mins. I made a reservation and mailed in a $75 check for the deposit. They are pretty flexible with times and reservations. If there is a spot on the ferry, they will move your time up or down if you want. We saw the ferry run more that once with 1 or no cars, so it is pretty easy to get on and off if you can wait for an open spot.

they have ice on the island.....$3.50 per 10 pound bag. Gas is $5 a gallon. Ranger is there from 8 am to 430 pm. Check in to the cabins is at 1pm, check out at 10am.

We had one of the non air conditioned cabins (cabin 15). For those that haven't stayed in the cabins before, they are duplexs. Each cabin is a large open rectangular room with 3 sets of bunk beds with worn out mattress pads. It has a stove and oven and a sink. Hot and cold running water. There is a decent size bathroom with shower, sink, and toilet. 3 ceiling fans, and all the windows and doors have screens on them to take advantage of the constant breeze/wind. Coverd front porch with rocking chairs. There is a typical campsite grill to use. We grilled both nights. Friday night we had a storm roll through about 2 am that by my guesses was packing 50 mph winds, so I was glad I wasn't in a tent. However, the rest of the weekend was beautiful. The green head biting flys were out in full force, but bug spray worked.....bring more than one can. The locals use a mix of 50/50 listerene and water. That keeps the flys away but not the mosquitos. But, since the ONSC trip is planned for the fall, the bugs should not be an issue. We had no luck fishing and saw no one else catching anything else either.

There was about 15 miles of beach. There were a few closures, but you can drive behind the dunes on a trail to get around the closed areas, so you are able to drive the full length of the island. We did not go to the old town because of the bugs, and that would eat into our adult beverage time.

I'll add more later

Already put in for time off.

no land cruiser pics or tech here, but there is Toyota....so just a few pics

also, I forgot to mention....there is a bath house on the island for the tent campers, you can camp anywhere and have fires on the beach as long as they are 100 yds from the cabins

my 4runner, 74 Bronco, and 78 CJ7....all made it there and back without incident......which is a feat in itself.

Leaving Morris Marina

rusted out wreck.....Jeep maybe?

Are cabins the only option or can we camp on the beach?

You can camp.
