Ran out of 22 gauge, so I used some 18 gauge sheet I had. Way harder to form, but a bit easier to weld. Probably have 6-hours into this one patch...

View attachment 3012708

Used a 'home-made' brake and a piece of 2" tube to form some of it at work.

more beating-to fit.

View attachment 3012706

Welded up the corners, drilled some holes for 'spot' welds. then bent the curve on the bottom, fit it in the hole, took about 2-hours to get it to fit just right...

and finally tacked into place.

Ran out of time last night, hope to get it welded out today, as I need to drive it this weekend. Not sure if I want to do the other side before painting this side, or wait and do it all at once, at the rate I'm going it's going to take me all summer to finish.
That looks great. Well done!

I am impressed with your progress, regardless of the 'extended time' - for your first go 'round, that's looking pretty sweet. You may have even inspired me to take a crack at this type of work when I have the time to play around. To this point, I have been taking this kind of stuff to a friend with a shop at a 'very reasonable rate' for repairs.

Watching with interest!!

Great work!!! Care to share some details on the sheet bender DIY set up. Looks good!!

Co-worker made it for some project. Welded it to the end of our welding table. Just a piano hinge, angle and square tube for lever/handles.

I used our Grizzly pan and box brake for the tighter bends.

Not much progress on the rust, getting back after it soon though, driver's side is worse.

I acquired a new solar panel from a local company. The controller 'solar' light wouldn't illuminate though. Spent a few days corresponding with a Redarc rep. in Aus. via email. Was getting a bit frustrated as I was sure I had a bad controller, but finally started checking voltage at every connection (should have done that first) and finally found I had a bad connection at one of the mini-Anderson plugs I built. Ordering a new, larger plug, the small ones are a PIA to work with.

Going to mount the panel directly to the roof, forward of my roof rack using some VHB backed high-strength velcro and tape the edges down. Just waiting on some helicopter tape to show up. Pics later.

People put it on bikes to protect the frame is where I first heard of it. I think the name comes from it being used for the leading edge of wings and helicopter blades. It's also used on cars to protect from rock-chips.

More time on the rust this week. Spent 8-hours on it yesterday.

Not much to go on after I cut everything out. Had to cut out part of my inner wheel-well piece to get the outer part to fit 'right', not sure what's right. I'll compare to another troopy, maybe go look at TonyP's this week. Not that it matters, I'm not re-doing this (actually I bet I revisit the rust in five to ten years, who knows?)

Moved on to the front of the rear wheel area a few weeks ago.

Way worse than the passenger's side. Cut out as much as I could and naval jellied it all.

Not a pretty job re-building the inner stiffener piece, but it'll do.

IMG_20220624_205413228.webp

And viola, three weeks later...

Time to learn how to use body-filler. I printed a tool holder as I need a spot to keep all my new tools I've acquired on this job. VHB taped it to the side of my welding cart.

Trying to source a rocker, this looks like another three evenings of work (three missed mtb rides) $53 from Partsouq, but not currently available, JoeK has some, but won't be back to ship to me until late July...

I may just wait, I'm sick of this project.

I did install my new visors, I don't think the color difference is that noticeable.

Old stained driver's side.
IMG_20220630_193011930_HDR.webp

Passenger's side no longer stayed up, held up with a clothes pin.

IMG_20220630_193821957_HDR.webp

And two new gray (B0) visors.

Velcro and taped my solar panel on, only went to the store so far. Not the cleanest install. May re-visit after this weekend.

The cables were too long, so I flipped it 180 and have them running across the panel, rather than coil them all up on the driver's side.

Dang, always thought your visor with the blood/brain matter stuff on it was cool. New ones look great as well, crazy to think I was there with you in Idaho a year ago this week!

I can't remember where we got the Troopy rockers, maybe Dave. But tin from a 78-Series will fit so they should be available. You could probably chop up 76/77 rockers to chop up and graft in a pinch.

Thanks Tony. I found one in Japan for $98, $60 shipping. I've got a big list of other things to get, as well. Think I'll just be patient and see what I can get from Joe, as he may have a couple fenders too. UAE has them for $275 ea., but $1000 to ship 🙄

Decided to take a break from body work to install new wipers and linkage.

My wiper linkage was tired, the knurl on the driver's side was gone, I had to be careful in the winter, and make sure I cleared all the snow before turning on my wipers, or risk the motor turning and the wiper not moving or slipping. I started carrying a 12mm wrench in my cup holder last year, so I could quickly re-set the wiper position after it slipped.

Dug around on Partsouq and ordered up parts for a later model 75 series. Got my care package yesterday. Had to get some hardware from another source, but glad I did, as the hardware holding the linkage was not original and I twisted the head off of one of them.

Got some new soft-parts as well rubber hood bumpers.

Got the old one out, wasn't sure how hard it would be, but it wasn't too difficult. The motor, just pops off the ball on the end.

New link assembly is 85150-60141
IMG_20220718_210819366_HDR.webp

New plastic clips for the cowl.
IMG_20220718_211349187.webp

New hood cowl to hood seal.
IMG_20220718_220806158.webp

Got new wiper arms and wipers. I didn't realize the wipers are different lengths, passenger side is a couple inches shorter than drivers.

Wish I had a covered spot to tear this whole thing down. I need to pull the windshield and address the rust in the windshield frame sooner rather than later. I did get a new windshield gasket with this order. I found the windshield part number and need to check with the local Toyota dealer to see if they'll order one in for me. I don't want to try to get glass shipped from overseas myself. Not even sure they'll ship it.

Toyota had the glass for my Troopy available within 2 days here in Phoenix... cool thing was my insurance paid for OEM replacement as an aftermarket source could not be found here.
