I think it varies by the inspector as well. I took my 60 into a run-down little inspection shop in a really bad Charlotte neighborhood thinking that they would just give me a sticker all easy-like. The guy in there must have thought I was an undercover fed agent because he took forever to do the safety inspection, including putting the truck on the lift and checking for leaks, etc. He dinged me for window tint (which I did not know I had and I happily removed once the truck was back down on the ground). Yeah. That dude put me through the wringer. Never went back there.

The shop I go to now just ogles over the cruisers and passes me pretty easy. No muss, no fuss.

Well, can't you go to any county to have your inspection done?

I got some places you can go if you need recommendations.

Yeah, a visual emission equipment check is supposed to be done in all counties. I got nailed on my 40 the last year it was eligible for inspection (my first year of ownership). I went to the same place that had been passing it for the PO for years but they refused because they didn't know me. Wanted $400 to put on enough fake stuff to pass visual. I think I just rode out the year and paid the fine...can't recall.

I don't get the inspection process. One year they raised my '94 and removed the wheels "to check the brakes". Sometimes they don't even lift the hood. Same place each time. Sometimes they aren't even high! Rarely.

I finally found a way to make a line bisecting my driveway, you know...'cause that's important. Cleared out storm damage trees.

I will have to research this sooner than later. My first NC inspection is in November and I’m pretty sure I can’t have a check engine light on when I go.
1995 and older have to pass a visual (no CEL) but do not have to deal with emissions. Technically, the 1995 is pre OBD2 but we have an interface and get similar output to OBD2. To pass visual, I just cleared the CEL before Shannon took it to the Citgo down the road for inspection. Last year, I removed the EGR tube and components and installed a resistor to fool the system. Now I don't have to deal with the CEL.

1996+ have a visual inspection and emissions inspection. If you have a CEL, I hope for your sake it is not PO401, the EGR system. Folks have spent thousands trying to make that fault go away and pass emissions. The resistor mod won't work on trucks that have to pass emissions since the system will read not ready but also not throw a code.

I can definitively say that a lit CEL in a pre-OBD2 (safety inspection only in all NC counties) gasser is not a problem at inspection. Unsure on 1996+ diesels. Never had to try it. Let us know, @SFROMAN .

Well my big ass truck is by pre 95. It’s an 07.
Either way. I will deal with that in late November when I’m done with work.

I hope it’s not an issue. I figure the egr delete is a very common mod done to the 6.0 fords. I will call the shop and get guidance from them and see how everybody else gets around it.

If I remember correctly you can just plug a functioning EGR valve and let it dangle. You’d probably have to tuck it secretly out of the way though.

I have passed inspection on the 97 two years in a row ,with a the resistor. Mine does have to pass emissions.

I used a 1.2 k resistor.

Interesting. There's a monster thread in the 80 section about using a 4.7K Ohm resistor to fool the system into thinking EGR is good however most said the 96+ Cruisers reported EGR as not ready with a resistor that size. The resistance increases as the engine comes up to temperature. It was determined that 4.7K was the resistance when the EGR was operating normally. Once I fixed mine, I haven't looked at the thread since then. Good to know.

Do you still have the EGR tube installed? with or without block off plates?

The thread I read ,said 1k ,but I had plenty of 1.2k . I made some connectors, that you can close sensor ,so it looks connected.

This is one hell if a off road recovery rig.

Talk amongst yourselves... I’ll give you a topic:

Does the slow speed benefit of these 100 cfm fans (each) outweigh the highway speed detriment?

Discuss...

(It’s a plate and finn oil cooler that has about half of the plate blocked by the body and the grill. Previously without fans, now has 4 - 100 cfm computer style fans triggered by a thermostatic switch on the transmission cooler fan. On at 160/off at 140)

I’ve got stacks of these fans. Pretty sure I got a dozen of them. I’ll be interested to see how long before 70 mph wind, rain and the like effect them. I’ve seen them caked in dust and still turning.
