Any hvac guys around? I’m sure it’s likely cost prohibitive but anyone know some options for AC/heat for 80x70 shop? It is spray foamed, however sides have 12’ ceilings on sides and 24’ in middle. I could probably do without heat since I have split unit for my upstairs office.
For that kind of space, you're likely looking at conventional systems as opposed to something like a split system. As heat rises while cooling would stay closer to the floor, something else to consider would be ducted AC and radiant heaters to direct that heat toward floor level.
I'd also be inclined to find either a Mechanical Engineer or very experienced Mechanical Contractor to design the system due to the high ceiling space and such. I've seen a number of projects with such features where a basic HVAC contractor assured clients he could put together a system, but just used basic areas and volumes to plug into their estimating software for the calculations and it simply didn't work out.

My need really is around the AC come late spring. I’ve got 3 radiant heaters strategically placed around areas of high use in east side of shop.
Agree this is no simple feet I wish to leave to small HVAC group.
Ceilings fans will be placed on every 20 feet on each side and I’m looking at options for the middle (big ass fans).
I’m not looking to keep shop at 70-75, simply be able to knock out the extreme heat during the spring and summer. My 3 dogs will be living in pen inside shop since they won’t be able to stay in RV during home build. This summer has been too hot to leave them in shop and although I can put them in upstairs office during the daytime it’s not ideal.
I’m sure this will likely be cost prohibitive but I’m not getting younger and I’ll likely need to do something in some economical form or fashion.

I looked at Big Ass Fans after seeing one at a friend's shop but the $4k price tag was a non-starter. Figured there had to be cheaper options and found these at HD.
Ended up buying one off ebay for $200 and liked enough to buy another to replace the first one if it goes out or eventually put in a barn I'd like to finish in. Not huge but 7ft and moves a lot of air.
Just for comparison, my shop is 50x70x16 and split into 1/3 and 2/3 parts. Small part has mini-splits I rarely use but big part has two 5-ton package heat pumps. In Alabama summer they typically run 9-6 at 74F with a max of ~ $250/mo. Winter is 68F with about a $200 max. Each has one high outlet and one low intake. Figure your shop is about 3X the size I'm heating/cooling so a couple of 15-ton units might be an option.

Practice rounds for 16" battleship gun. 2000lb ea. Plan was to put them at a gate but like so many things, never got around to it. Plus I could just hear folks giving directions - then you 1/2 mile past the crazy guy's place......

Agree with price for BAS being over the top, that’s why I don’t have them now.

I have 7-7/8" tri-cone drill bits (from wells that were drilled based on my work) on my gate posts, and some neighbors have used them for directions. But they already think I'm crazy for building a "bunker" for a house (their words).

My 4 ton heat pump cools easily down below 75 in my 40x40 shop with 16’ walls and it only has the normal red iron rolled insulation. It is set up with one central plenum below the eave which might work for your cooling needs. Would definitely need fans to get the heat to circulate down though. Obviously you have way more volume so no idea how many tons you would need.

This what I have in my head. Dual plenums running down each area where 12’ transitions to 24’ blowing towards outer wall hence cooling each side with 12’ ceilings.

I am not an HVAC engineer but I think you could get by with a lot less if you only wanted to maintain something like 78 in the worst of the summer. I like your two plenum idea. You should ask what two 5 ton heat pumps would/could do. Would be interesting to know with the spray insulation.

BAF are definitely proud of their products. I've had a couple projects look into them, but haven't had any make it through to be included in the construction. The BAF are built to an industrial standard that the knockoffs just don't duplicate. However, they come at such a premium that many people just cannot make that leap and the knockoffs are there to pick up that market.
