Build New project - 12H-T turbo diesel transplant into my 1991 FJ80.

We are confident that the 12H-T will kick A$$ in the FJ80. Even more intercooled.. but that is later.
You really need to test drive a 12H-T powered cruiser to understand. You probably wouldn't believe it's *only* 130hp, but for sure... if you just look at the published numbers you might have concern considering how the FJ80 slugs around with...er..160ish?? hp (allegedly)

Exactly. I was asleep in the left hand seat of a HJ61 driven by a G&S employee when we were stopped by a Montana trooper claiming were were doing 87MPH uphill, into a wind. Try that in an FJ62!

Ya, rumor is that fella still owes M.R. a $20.00USD bill.

Don't forget to add that you were loaded with 4 guys plus all the fixins and  for Pismo... to the tune of 1200lbs I recon.

What is the update now? Sheldon said that you were almost ready to start the wiring adaptation. How is everything coming together? New photographs?

Been browsing through this very interesting thread and was wondering why the A442 tranny (that ThePookieBear suggested back in March, Post#45) wasn't seriously considered. Was it fitment, availability, price or just an oversight? Being known as the "bus" tranny for other applications, and your upgrade project for the original 3FE powerplant, it would seem like a logical choice.

I believe stone wants to keep the AWD system that's currently in the 80, also, isn't the A442 electronic o/d? The 12H-T has no provision for an ECU, I would think stone is working on the KISS principle.

Yup...GG got it right...the A440 bolted right up to the 12H-T using the 12H-T bell housing and torque converter. Future upgrades being considered are extreme valve body and the lock-up torque converter from Oz.

Ross...spent the whole day there today and got the wiring pretty much done and buttoned up. Just have to wire in the Redarc Smart Start isolator and the manual glow.

I'm a bit confused how the two terminals work with the glow screen using 12V...if anyone's done this before and can give some guidance that would be greatly appreciated...otherwise I'm sure we'll figure it out soon enough. I'm just going to use a HD solenoid with a push button switch and manually glow my engine instead of trying to fool around and retrofit a glow timer.

The project is just about done...planning on firing her up for the first time on the weekend...that's if a couple of parts arrive from Japan in time.

Pics from today...

And...........BLING, BLING!!! :D :D :D

Oh yeah...I probably won't have AC for a little while...the compressor sits on the opposite side of the engine on the 12H-T, and it's going to be a major PITA and $$$ to probably get the custom pipes together along with sourcing the right 12V stator coil.

OMG, that is frickin' beautiful. You must be beside yourself... how do you sleep at night? I'd be up all night thinking about how nice this will be.

Thanks, guys!

For the AC problem I think I'm going to use Skip's in Aldergrove. Ciaran has used him in the past with customer's rigs, and he says they can handle the custom stuff. I will need new hard lines fabricated to go to the compressor that now sits on the driver's side of the engine.

My rad will need a bit more custom tweaking. Sheldon and I installed the rad yesterday, and found that the bottom outlet point right to the PS pulley and there's no way we can get a hose to it without hitting the pulley. I'm going to try to get them to install a 90* elbow on that outlet pointing upwards. The trans oil cooling fitting will also need a fitting pointing downwards a bit.

Also asked Ciaran what he's done with past diesel swaps about the glow screen, and after speaking with him I've decided to power both terminals with 12V. Essentially the screens are going to be hooked up in parallel. I bought a Cole Hersee constant duty 12V 85A solenoid, and it's going to be fused with a 40A Maxi fuse...I think that should be enough. Sheldon gave me a great idea of changing the film on my dashboard to an HDJ81 film and hook up my manual glow so that when I hit the switch, the light in my cluster lights up with the glow symbol on it. :)

It's all getting there...

Jay had a similar problem swapping a 2H into his 40 series. He had the bottom outlet re-located to avoid the PS pump. Here's his transplant thread.

I bet you can't wait to fire it up! I remember the first start of my 6.2 conversion, it was exciting, no exhaust, no air cleaner, in my workshop with the doors closed in January! All the things you should not do but I couldn't wait!
Enjoy!

Stone .. et al :D

Niccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccce!!!!!!!!!

Interesting, Tapage...I think I might have the problem solved. I dropped off my rad today and they said it would be no problem to install a 90* elbow pointing up. I also left them my shroud to make sure the fitting can clear it. I'll just get a generic lower rad hose afterwards.

Damn...Chicago just scored again. Fricken Canucks!

Distinct possibility...the No. 1 bypass tube and kickdown cable arrived from Japan today...thanks, Dave!

Putting in the finalized rad on Saturday, and completing some more wiring stuff. Then the cores will get a good flushing before I hook up the new rad and flush the whole system and fill with Toyota red. Rest of the fluids go in and then maybe flash her up. Hopefully my fuel water separator arrives in time for me to install it prior to filling up the tank with diesel.

hi stone, can ya tell me what year and what the engine orignaly came from or in,nice setup .will do the same setup on my fj80-volvo step by step .and where can i get a diesel 12h-turbo,thanks can't wait, just like the rest of us.jim
