Do you have a shrinking disc?

I did try one. I felt like I had better luck with a hand torch. Maybe I was expecting something miraculous and it didn't quite ever turn into a miracle. 😊. For the most part I don't have bad oil canning any more.

I feel for you NikP! I might have an extra bow if you’re interested.

I have three factory supports and I added two that I made myself by bending 1 inch pipe. They're definitely not the caliber of @scrapdaddy supports but sufficient to hide under a headliner.

My supports don't have any jute material under them touching the roof panel as I was waiting to put the in after paint. I guess I'll put that in to prevent flex now.

Are you kidding? I just used enough Lizard Skin and Monstaliner to cover up my work. I never did finish the top of the roof the right way. The guy who painted mine was having some mini strokes and didn't want to work long on a ladder or walk board. I figure a roof rack will hide all my lumps and bumps. :)

Yep I was thinking just slap a roof rack on top and call it good. i Keep wondering why I'm so worried about it, you have to be 7 feet tall to notice. I guess I feel like I'll live with knowing there's a flaw up there and it would bug me ever time I think about it.

On another topic, has anyone dealt with the little plastic pieces around the door handle buttons? What did you do? All of mine are cracked/broken.

I think someone has repo’d those...Pablo? Not sure.

So I spent Saturday and Sunday with a hammer and dolly banging on my roof. I figure I'm not going this another time so this is it. I got things as close as I could.

Today I went to my favorite auto body supply store for additional advice. I came back home with fiber reinforced body filler. It's supposedly much stronger than the premium Evercoat stuff I was using. The guy told me to coat the inside of the roof panel. This would add stability and it won't add thickness to cause cracking on the exterior. All good since it's covered by the headliner.

I also broke out the welder and added some reinforcing members between all the roof supports. He sold me some 3M pillar foam to create contact between all the supports and the roof panel. A bit messy but it did the job as it expanded.

All in all things are pretty solid now. I then applied the reinforced body filler in the low spots on the exterior as a starting point for my general skim coating of regular body filler. This will give strength to the low areas and not be as subject to cracking.

Now time to skim coat and block sand. (AGAIN!)

🤪

Smooth roof version 2.0

Almost done, I put one last coat of high-build primer on and decided to call it a weekend. My back hurts and I can barely stand up straight. I need a break.

I understand now why the bodyshop replaced the entire roof on my daughter's FJ Cruiser when it had hail damage. it's easier than making that big of area smooth.

🤪

Guess what I did today?

Ran out of gas so clear coat has to wait until tomorrow.

WOW! Moving along now. It looks real good. Looking at the one picture, the cream color is what I was going after, but didn't get there. Nice going!

Toyota colors from recent models. Quick Sand and Army Green (dark green)
What you use for colors?? Looks great. Must be Happy 😎
