Builds My Mexican 1965 FJ40V Build Thread

I also went with practicality in some areas.

Example:

The thread on my F.D. pull system was 6mm so no F.D. knobs I bought would fit and I couldn't adapt them successfully.

I had this made, it works and it was the solution I had at hand (please excuse the poor quality of the photos, it was dark when I took them):

There‘s someone on mud who makes knob stickers so maybe they could make an F. D one for you and you’d be 99.34% there 😂!

Also rewired the Koito headlight plugs, the wires were very brittle, I cut them as short as possible, soldered new wiring and voilá:

They sell new plugs for the headlamps. I recently did it to a beater; took the headlamp circuit and built its own subharness. They came with 16g leads, iirc, about $10, autozone, plus they give you a boot so they don't get as wet from above. Maybe some new plugs come with the H4 wiring upgrade from Vintage Teq or whatever.

Appreciate it, will look into that.

In some spots it is probably fresh iron from friction and road vibration? You probably have more acid rain than we do? Cruisers around here are caked in calcium and magnesium salts from the soil, and there is little NOx industrial pollution sources to cause acid rain, so I don't know.

Has anybody suffered from PRD (Post Restorum Depression)?

I feel like I am going to start getting on a funk now that my project is almost over...

I now understand the endless tinkering many folks here mention.

What's next? I am debating whether I should keep it in Mx or bring up to the U.S.. Maybe even drive it from Tx to NJ once the import has been completed.

You might be feeling what many of the 400,000 NASA connected people felt after the successful moon landing. The Apollo Program took eight years and cost some $25bn (numbers any LC restorer can relate to). For therapy, drive it in the wilds. Wear it out. Repeat restoration.
Another 'therapy': feed the addiction with another project. One more resistant to salty eastern roads? Keep the 40 in Mexico?
Me thinks I will never get PRD because I will never finish any of my projects.

You can get a little PRD relief by harassing others doing builds on mud :D. If you bring it to the states, drive up through Idaho, we can compare rigs!

WAY back in about ‘93 I had a customer who did a frame-off on a Lily white ‘63 FJ40HT. Mike from Jamaica. @Land Cruiser Junky and @Kofoed knew him too. Well, he had PRD and told me he was going to sell his rig and get a 40 to wheel. I told him that I thought he was crazy. Why would you buy a new big question mark when you have a fully-known quantity right in front of you? Other than resale value?

He looked at me for about half a minute and said I was right.

We stuffed some add a leafs under it, then stuffed some 32x11.5s under it. He was all smiles, and he got the wheeling bug out of his system for a year before he sold the truck.

He walked in out of the blue about six months after that and put his ‘63 bezel on the counter. Something about a small discrepancy in the selling price.😉

This is not a bad idea, although I do romanticize over the idea of a cross country trip with the kids! And even meet fellow Cruiserheads like @middlecalf along the way!

I guess the only thing I can do to make it even more "mine" is drive it! As soon as I have my carb tuned and fuel consumption gives me anything above 7 MPG!

I can almost see the ad coming up on TV!

(Voice over)

"Do you suffer from lack of tinkering, aimlessly scroll though eBay, live vicarously through other people¡s projects?

You may be one of dozens suffering from PRD. Dozens!

Talk to you totally objective inner-mechanic to see if ANOTHER RUST PROJECT is right for you.

Warning: Side effects may include, but are not limited to, spouse frustration, financial ruin, irrationality and never before experiences obsessiveness."

So i am thinking of bringing my LC Stateside from Mexico.

I am both Mexican and US citizen.

Does anyone know what this entails import-wise? I know it is not a simple answer but any general pointers would help.

Cheers!

Reading this again makes me think you kinda knew what was coming, didn't ya?

Latest update:

I found a pull button I really liked for the interior LED lights I installed, I liked the button so much I got a second one as my F.D. button with the right, albeit unusual, threading.

The ONLY thing not working is my inspection lamp socket. It is intact but seems to have no current...maybe it has too much paint stuck inside to make contact?

If you bring the 40 to the states...you definitely need to swing by the Denver area in CO!
