on a hurry, you may try a reman one? Seem to be available at 4wheelauto

If you have an aluminum bellhousing, I think you can swap the adapter to make it fit.

I emailed Dan. The starter housing looks like it bolts up differently from mine, but I’m sure I could cannibalize parts from it.

I sanded down the contacts and the commutator and she starts MUCH easier now. It’s a band-aid fix as I know its days are numbered.

We found this small copper ball rolling around. Turns out it was a piece of a commutator that had been ripped out and rolled around for god knows how many years.

Yeah not ideal!

Any idea on part numbers?

I’m honestly thinking in the short term, getting something cheap and easy as replacement while I rebuild the starter with some genuine parts as this truck was supposed to be my daily driver starting next week!!

I sold my other car and then this happened. Whoops!

I guess a reman/generic starter is your only option for a daily driver - but it's worth keeping the original Nippon Denso unit.

Armature: 28160-47040
Brush holder: 28140-77090
Field coil: 28120-56081

it could be that space between pole filled with carbon dust from brushes. This could created enough sparks that damages commutator bands surface. Enough damage that a piece of it let go??
It may be still usable, using a lathe and bringing down the surface. Then create a new recess between bands.
I don’t know if they give specs for that kind of work in the FSM. I’ll have a look.

I did that before using an electric drill and sand paper (on a piece of wood) not perfect but worked!

You could show your picture to a starter/ alternator shop.

Yeah I sanded down the brushes and the commutator but it’s honestly too far gone at this point. It absolutley struggles to turn the engine over.

Yeah I think there was enough neglect and dust and whatnot built up over the years that it ripped a piece of the commutator out when it got over used then from there it was carnage!

Since I’m in Calgary I’m hoping Dan with 4 wheel auto has one I can buy then switch the nose cone as the one I have is different from the one he is selling.

For now I’m just going to bump start it and then hope I can get the starter for early next week.

Good news,

Ripped up to Edmonton on my day off to see Dan at 4 wheel auto.

Picked up a re-built denso starter and a denso 3B primer pump as mine started leaking on my drive from Banff to Calgary today.

What a great guy and great shop. Lots more business going his way!

Time to put it in the truck and see what the next thing that fails is!

What a world of difference a new starter makes.
The engine turns over something 5x faster with the new starter.

All my ā€œcold startā€ and ā€œhot startā€ woes were likely chalked up to how slow the engine was turning over with that old tired starter.

Shiny new parts amongst the old.

Its a joy to hear a B/H engine start briskly and assertively! Glow System and Starter in top notch condition, such a pleasure. Well done.

That was a nice find, well done!

So true.
I no longer have the embarrassment of "hoping" my truck starts when I'm in public places now!

That was a nice find, well done!

Ill give the credit to @lacalvette with the find! Just lucky to live close enough to 4WheelAuto!

Canada day long weekend.

Took some backcountry logging roads to drive through the Rockies a bit. Truck did well but my god I need new suspension. The current dampers on the truck (probably from the 80’s) do absolutely nothing. I hit a wash out on a gravel road and the truck bounced around for a good second or two after hahaha. Novel for now, but it will wear off shortly.

Almost ran out of diesel on the way to work today. Sputtered my way to a gas station. Was a good trial as I was seeing how far I could push a single tank of diesel.

Here are the numbers.

Distance: 832km (517miles)
Diesel to fill: 84.9L (22.4 USgal)

Fuel Economy: 10.2 L/100km (23mpg)

Not bad for a 40 year old truck...

Happy 4th of July to you Yankees out there.

That is actually superb fuel economy for a 3B. You must drive very gently. I get 13L/100klms out of my 2H vehicles.

Drove down from Calgary to Blairmore this weekend for the Sinister 7 Ultra. Truck did fantastic. No issues other than being deadly slow on the long sustained climbs up the hills. But there is something enjoyable about not trying to be the fastest car on the road.

My buddy and I posted up shy of Crowsnest mountain, dropped tailgates and drank some brews and waited for our buddies to come in from their leg of the race.

Very much so!

Great photos.. the blue is so pretty. That mountain looks iconic - I googled it, it seems quite famous and there's some spectacular pics online - thanks for that bit of education!

Thank you! Amateur photographer in my spare time. Crowsnest pass in southern Alberta is gorgeous. That distinctive mountain is Crowsnest mountain!

Nearby, is Canada’s 3rd largest (I believe) landslide. Happen in the early 1900s due to undermining and poor planning of the mineshafts and unstable bedrock. Apparently the natives didn’t settle at the bottom cause they knew it was bad news. And one day, half of turtle mountain came sliding down wiping out the town of Frank.
Check it out, it’s called Frank Slide.

As well, I test fit some 285/75 R16 wheel and tyres today a buddy brought by. Quite the look If I say so hahaha!

I found out that one of the cheap rock auto rear wheel cylinders for the brakes is blown again. Aisin brand is on order now. The cheap ones only lasted like 2000km!

Hi PG

I have given up on finding a genuine upper radiator hose for my BJ60, see picture below of BJ40, BJ60 (old) and BJ70 hoses.

My 3Bii BJ60 uses the same upper radiator hose as yours, have you found a source over there for an aftermarket hose?

Thanks!
