I think there is a vacuum sensor on one of the small vac reservoir? It might be connected with the brake warning light.
If so, when idling, vac might be a little lower than hight RPM, could trigger a false signal if sensor got a little tired. Not sure.
The warning light can also be low fluid level, or a fault in the fluid level sensor or parking brake sensor circuit.
How are the brakes? Do you get a hard pedal? Have you done the FSM booster test (pumping the air out and starting the engine with your foot on the brake pedal) to check the booster function?
No but I will now!
The brakes are solid on this truck so far. No hard pedal and I still have vacuum for a bit after the engine is killed. So seems like the booster is still fine (for now.) still want to take it apart and get the fluid out of it.
Small updates.
Finally took the time to take the front door covers off and re-grease the window mechanisms. Also added more sound dampening sheets to the doors and front floor area.
Looks like this isnāt the first time the covers had been off.
Also re did a wiring section in the rear of the truck due to a corroded and failing 6 pin connector. (Didnāt have drivers side running lights since Alaskaā¦.) whoops
Then just been enjoying more of Oregon living in the rig.
a strangle occasional clicking noise was back and I began to fear the worst again. So I bought a new water pump and fan clutch (which it really needed anyway)
I think the idler pulley bearing had too much pressure on it as well and might be going. It did feel fairly loose again. I could wiggle it with my fingers when the belt was off. So that may be the cause. But regardless I replaced the water pump, kept the old one to hopefully clean it up and keep it as a spare, or rebuild it if I can find a place or people interested in that in Oregon.
The new fan clutch makes the truck sound so much better. You can finally hear the engine over the fan noise lol.
We did all this work infront of my parents place in Canada. Pretty fun wrenching with Pops.
Then drove a flawless 8 hours back to Bend Oregon from Vancouver. The truck feels better than ever. And the clicking is gone.
There is a light squeak at Idle thatās coming from the transmission area. Unsure what thatās about. And the odd clank when you turn the truck off. Just assuming thatās engine mount related.
Parents were planning on scrapping their 1998 Durango, and my dad noticed the tyres on it were less than a season (in use) and shockingly were R15! They were 31x10.5, same as I was planning to buy as the previous 27x9.5 tyres were down to their tread wear marks after a solid 70,000km on the truck.
Sure enough we brought both sets to a shop and hot swapped em. And now I have a ānewā set of 31s for free! Epic!
The truck ran so much better on the highway home with this set up. Went from around 2900rpm on the highway at ~70mph to now sitting closer to 2600rpm.
