Tha blk box in the glove box has the factory speaker in it.

This might help:
That is helpful. So the speaker was in that box but has been relocated below the glovebox, which would explain that janky wiring to the speaker in its current position. Thanks.

I will say though, putting the speaker in the glove box seems like a pretty stoooopid idea. :p

It was all kinda added on hodgepodge for the US market anyway

I think the speaker under the dash is non OEM. Is there a speaker behind the grill in the glovebox?

I've had the 40 on a diet lately. First weight to shed was the doors.

No problem getting these off. They've clearly been on and off a good bit. I did forget to unbolt the inner hinge on the first one so that was entertaining. I'm generally a one man operation so getting the door wrestled back into place and the pin back in was comical. Sometimes I could use another hand and another brain.

The rear doors had never been off the truck and they were pretty stubborn.

PB Blaster and a few days of soaking helped but getting the correct JIS Phillips head screwdriver was essential (thanks, Nolen).

Got it back to street legal with a pair of zip ties.

Next up: removing the top.

The top is coming off because it's summer but also because there is rust to be repaired. My learning curve is steep and this top had never been removed but it's just a bunch of bolts, right. Pretty much and they all would like to stay exactly where they have been for 48 years. My job was to get everything loose before it went to the body shop for removal and repair. It came off in three pieces because there's rust under the cap and the seals for the cap and the body need to be replaced. It took me several days on and off, soaking with PB Blaster, wrenching and sweating and swearing but I got them all loose. I only sheared one off and drilled and tapped that one and was feeling pretty good about things. Then the body shop helper guy sheared off another half dozen so he'll be doing some drilling and tapping on his own. I bought all new hardware from Overland Metric so that should help when we reinstall it. I need to clean things up with Scotch-Brite and get the old seals off with adhesive cleaner but the top is off and at the shop.

I will say, when you loosen all the bolts on a hardtop and the seals are all ancient history, it is one clattery ride down the road.

Next up: the ugly part.

Been there, done similar... Many times...

You never know what you'll discover when you start peeling back the onion on rust but all in all, it doesn't look too bad with the cap off the sides.

I know some people will cringe but for those of you who followed my mustard yellow 40 rehab years back, this is very fixable.

Top of the passenger side - pretty solid.

And we'll clean up these roof rack scars and repair the lower area on the driver's side. Weld in some new metal.

I took the truck to the paint shop this morning to match the color and buy the paint. I don't plan to paint or repair the tub at this point. It's in really great shape short of that old CB antenna mount. I might do it eventually but I really like the way the truck looks for now.

What's the plan for the summer? Bikini top? Soft top? Sunburnt scalp?!
