I’ve wondered if my 80 would respond to a good tune.

Shameless plug for our PNP harness with an EMU Black from ECU Masters. There is also an awesome tuner in Alberta that has tuned a bunch of 1FZ's on the emu black platform.

What is that tuners name? And they have tuned it with your system?

@Cruisers and Co what gains have you seen for supercharged engines from OEM ECU running on 91 and your EMU black ecu package with a tune?

They all would

Vitali @ the boost factory in Calgary and yes, he has tuned a few of our turbo trucks. No one to date has done our system with a supercharger so I do not know the gains. We did just have a truck do 430 hp and 535 ftlbs to the wheels @ 12psi on one of our turbo set ups. You'll need to figure out charge air cooling if you are going to be running more boost out of a TRD/Mag supercharger.

Was talking to a tuner in Edmonton which is close to me here, and they indicated a water/methanol setup might work good for increasing octane levels and cooling the air as fitting an intercooler with the TRD setup seems tough as there is not much space or options out there. Would your system be able to control that?

It would need to be wired in and configured but yes, the emu black could in theory control a water meth set up. We haven't done that to date because we run an air to air intercooler with our turbo's. We do have a standalone snow performance water meth kit running in an fj55 with one of our turbos. works well

Does it also have any protections? The haltech I have set up to pull timing an add fuel if my iat gets too hot

Yes it can pull timing due to knock, correct for IAT's, add rpm at idle if temps get too high to increase airflow, shut off if there is too low of oil pressure (separate sensor required). It can do more things than I can list. Just like your haltech it is a full blown ecu that is pretty much infinitely customizable

Heck yeah awesome to see a new product like that

here’s another update. Finally got flex fuel tuned. My intercooler system cannot keep up if its 80+ outside. End of third gear iat will be in the 170s. I tried upgrading the pump and adding a big resivior. Neither really helped much. Also I was running out of fuel pressure and had to wire my fuel pump directly from the battery. If iat is cold enough it makes 12psi and ramps up to 15 at the higher rpm. As of now I am looking to abandon the water to air system for a front mount air to air. And go to a smaller pulley to offset the boost loss.
Also I made this air box and upgraded my exhaust to 2.5 inch y pipe to a 3 inch exhaust. Playing with the idea of coil packs upgraded intake manifold and drive by wire as well.

How big is the heat exchanger for the intercooler circuit? Most kits are far too small.
Look for the radiator off a small buzzbox car and try and fit it in the cruiser.

what kind WAI is being used here? I looked for some info but didn't read all of the pages!

It’s a barrel style core about 6 inches x8 inches. I’m using a zzperformance pump and my stock windshield washer fluid tank as a reservoir. The exchanger is 20x6.5x2 inches.

that's very cool, thank you for the pic.

for some reason all the barrel style ones don't seem to work very good. There are some rectangular ones out there that would fit and they work much better. If a bigger reservoir didn't help then it's not a coolant temp issue. Its apples and oranges but im very happy with air to water on my 80, highest intake temp to date is 140 on mine at 22PSI going up a mountain. I'm running about the same size ex changer with no reservoir mercdes/bosch pump that looks exact same as yours. If i turn off the pump while driving I'm at 180 pretty quick on flat ground not pushing it, turn it back on and drops to 110, so safe to say its doing alot.

this should fit or maybe even their next size up: Water to Air Intercoolers - https://www.frozenboost.com/air_water-ic/water-to-air-intercoolers-p-216.html although i did have one fail and leak coolant internally, not aware of a higher quality one available like that short of making your own with a custom core.

That core looks too small to me. You might be loosing some performance from that. I wonder how it performs with just a straight tube?(Before everything gets heat soaked anyway)

What happened when the motor ingested coolant? That’s another reason I’m looking at air to air

nothing, it was on a diesel with high compression too, just the fluid level got slightly lower over time. after that i made a custom cooler welded directly to the intake manifold with a custom core from bell intercoolers, its been good for about 4 years now with no issues.
