Heres another photo of the 40gal replacement main tank from LRA's website (another was shown a few posts ago). Sits just a bit lower than the factory tank. I think this tank would have less clearance issues than the 44gal aux tank. I still think a 20-24 low profile aux tank would be the one to get but this ones not bad.

Here is the 44gal aux tank for comparison. Again, photos from the LRA website.

I am really all about the range. I hate stopping every 300 miles. I loved my TDI Passat I could go from IA to PA on one tank. The TLC I can't even get out of Iowa without a refill stop. I think I'll do the 40 gal main then later on I'll add the 44 gal aux.

OK, it is now a thing....

When resources free up, the plan is to develop a universal aux tank that fits all 100s, including 2003+ models with charcoal can on rear cross-member. Need a 2003+ in SF Bay Area for photos and measurements. Any volunteers to visit @orangefj45 and the Valley Hybrids crew? :)

Looking forward to it. Been looking for one for my 98 LX470.

HOW MUCH DEMAND?
Medium sized tanks (24 gallons) are offered for 80 and 200 Series in addition to Large tanks (40 and 42 gallons) for those rigs. Possible to do same for the 100s if enough demand is seen.
Any interest in a 20-24 gallon auxiliary tank for the 100 Series?

Count me in as well!

If the 42 gal aux tank hangs down below the frame rails, I would be very interested in a low profile 20-24 aux tank. Either way, count me 100% in for a tank. Would it be possible to fit the 40gal main tank with a 42 or 24 gal aux tank? That would give you some serious range.

Yes - you can fit both, using the dual-feed filler tube and OEM fuel door.

Count me in! What does the fuel neck look like with these kits?

Kinda sorta like this one....

Id be interested in an aux tank- maybe rotomolded on par with rotopax vs steel. Upfront tooling will be more but cheaper to produce in the long run and probably a fair bit lighter.

Size/capacity: You might poll this. I couldnt see needing more than 10 gallon capacity for my needs, and that keeps the overall size small enough to tuck into the spare tire area with out hanging down too far to impede departure angles. Considering the distance between fuel stations in remote areas of the West, Ive only been on a few tracks where fuel stops were over just over 200 miles. 34 gallons capacity should safely get you 300 miles range off road in a loaded/armored 100.

I'm in for a 20-24gal aux tank.
Need the range for a Winter Alcan 5000 - freezing temperatures and snow/ice roads = terrible mpg.

Good idea - suggest you start a new thread on this topic, with a poll and a description of the non-metal solution. It might get more response that way.

I would not suggest a plastic tank for spare tire location. The exhaust runs right under the tank. An exhaust leak could melt a hole.

That's a 105 or 80 series. The 100 frame is wider and so more room between the frame rails.

In for pretty much any capacity design that doesn't reduce the ground clearance below my high clearance @4x4labs rear bumper. I don't care for plastic, especially for a gas tank in that location, but I would still buy it... I'd just dump my exhaust before the axle.

  • If there is demand for smaller version of the aux tank, we can likely make that happen. When we launched the 200 discussion, there were Large (42 gallon) and Small (16 gallon) versions in production. As we worked through mods for emission compliance and ease of install (reducing capacity by several gallons to clear the charcoal canister) we also developed a Medium sized tank at 24 gallons.

How much demand is needed to start production of a 24 gal tank? If the demand is met, how long until it would be available? I would really like to have one in my 100 by this summer.

Three months? If they're even available in Summer 2019 I'd be stoked.

The present LRA offerings are huge. The extra weight and reduction in ground clearance, especially, is a no go for me.

The 25 gallon version that was available 10 years ago would sell big around here....
We can give you a smaller tank.

LRA is in this market for the long haul, but there has to be enough demand to justify front-end engineering, CAD and set-up of production files.

We have spent the last few months developing a family of auxiliary tanks for US spec 200 Series. The story is told here and can give you a sense of what it takes. Auxiliary Fuel Tanks for 200s

Same team, same process will apply to the new aux tank for the 100 Series - regardless of size. Neither the "old" 24 gallon tank or "huge" 42 gallon tank for 100s were designed to work with the later 100 Series and the rear-mounted charcoal canister.

With enough interest in the new, smaller aux tank (likely around 20 gallons) we can have a tank in your hands by Summer.

To make this happen, we need a later 100 Series for measurements, photos and template-building (cardboard only, no welding) at the Valley Hybrids shop in Stockton, CA. Any volunteers?

If you want to help, find us a Northern California guinea pig who wants a good deal on a tank in exchange for some R&D time and let us know who will order a tank when (not if) available.....price will be $1,595 or thereabouts, ETA Summer. Get on the 100 Aux List at this page Request a Quote -

Thanks!

Thanks!
I live a LONG way away, so I cannot drop my truck off, but if there's anything I can do with my truck myself (or with a local dealer you know, for example), I'm 100% down for helping in any way I can.

Thanks for the offer, but we need to get hands on. We WILL make this happen :)
