More work on the doors.....I figured while I am still waiting for my power door lock actuators/window channels, I would trim out the speaker openings so they're ready for the speaker pods. I was careful to make sure that sound deadening was not installed in the areas I had to cut. Makes a giant mess.

Going to run the same setup(speaker) as in the 79 #1.

Finalized the steering support too.....needed to make it look a little more appealing. Into the powdercoating pile it goes.

Prepped the interior for sound deadener spray....going to hopefully be spraying on Friday if all goes well. Need to try and do the hood tomorrow/Thursday So I can knock it out at the same time.

It was like this pic was meant to be.....perfect morning light in the shop.

Can we see a couple end-on shots to see how the flares cover the full-width 80 axles?

That’s a good photo showing me how much rise the front is above the frame. That’s about where I have it placed. I imagine there isn’t much difference in my 75 compared to your 79. Do you know if those front mounts are modified at all? I cut the front mounts off the 70 frame and hope to use them on the 80.

I’m guessing you like the frog tape for automotive use? Do you wait for it to dry before peeling or do it wet?

Somebody wants me to take a picture?? You asked the right guy! For sure I can get some pics. The 80 series rollers I have on the truck aren't the optimal for widths and offsets(as in totally wrong). Not sure the rear end is even in the right spot...kind of slapped it in there.

Would be happy to grab a close up pic tomorrow with a measurement.

The front mounts, I would guess, are tabbed. I would have to go look at #1 to confirm that. I think we set our body height once we got the body on the frame and used a set of OEM 80 mounts that lined up(maybe forward cab mounts?). I have so many pics of #1's frame I will dig thru it. I think #1 and #2 sit the same in the front.

We use green and orange 3M tape at the shop. The green is the lower adhesion tape that the guys like for protecting things that will get removed quickly. Orange has higher adhesion and is better for making templates or holding things in place while they are working.

I buy cases of it on ebay.......24 rolls at a time. I buy the factory seconds/blemished ones. Saves some good money and works the same. They usually sell in smaller amounts.

Blue, in our experience, will kind of melt into things like paint if it's left on for a while. We used to use it but the guys always ask for the green and orange. Great for making labels on boxes too. New rules now with the container....EVERYTHING gets labeled before it goes in. Ha.

Going to peel it when it's tacky I think. I usually don't have the will power to leave it on. Ha. I'm really going to focus my spraying in the floors, firewall, rear wall and roof....won't hit the windows or the pillars all that hard. We were kind of going over it tonight and thinking that we're going to remove a lot of the green dots where the new kid filled in holes. We don't think it will be thick enough to cause any issues and we don't want to make a mess trying to remove things when wet. A little afraid to let them dry in there because we don't know this new product very well. The holes in the floors however will remain filled. I don't want material in the seat mount bolts, seat belt mounts, etc. About 1mm on the floor, 1mm on the firewall, 2mm on the rear wall and the roof. That's the game plan. We'll see how it goes.

That would be great. The Cummins intake horn is stopping me from calling it good. I need another 1/2” to close the hood but don’t want to go higher than what stock would/should have been.

The Maltec Troopy is on an 80 frame. @gilmorneau was gracious enough to snag some pics body mount and frame pics for me to eyeball some stuff for my Troopy. I'll keep my opinions of the actual work on the Maltec frame to myself :poof: , but it looks that they used OEM rear flares and (I believe) 17x9 0ET wheels. Not sure why they didn't put front flares on. They fit in the OEM flares... for the most part. No idea on tire size.

For the bargain price of $140k this can be yours...

I saw that Troopy somewhere on IG or something. Really cool. Christo did the same thing on his 79....no front flares, rear flares only. The symmetry of not having flares on both front and rear bothers me for some reason.

$140k seems about right.....any idea what motor? Bet that thing rides out on that setup!

EDIT: sorry for the hijack

Specs on that Troopy here:

Just says 4.2 liter turbo diesel on HDJ chassis. I assumed it’s a 1HD-T but I guess it could be a turbo’ed 1HZ.

And see this thread for some further intel:

“Troopy is a 78 series LHD and built on a modified 80 series chassis with 100% brand new drive train all the to the wheel studs.”

If it’s a “new” drive train with refurb’ed 80 chassis PLUS the interior build out PLUS the carbon fiber pop top using a 78 series body, $140k does seem about right.

Couple of pics for you. This is #2....

This was in my build file for #1....not sure who's truck it was but it's higher than mine

It's also really interesting because of the radiator used. I think this is an 80 radiator with the crossmember in it's stock location. I learned the hard way that if you use the 70s radiator, you need to move this crossmember forward. The stock 70 radiator is WAY tall.

Here's #1.....it looks like we used the OEM rear mounts....then built the other mounts based where we were sitting on those rear mounts.

That is going to help me a bunch. Thanks.

So is it the 79 series radiators that don't fit or any 70 series radiator? I have a cheapo eBay hzj75 radiator on its way knowing that it may not work but need something to start with.

Radiators are a sore subject right now for me.

I used a 75 series radiator from what I can determine....and it was for a narrow nose 75 with a 1FZ...so a FZJ75(I think). #1 had a small mishap with it's radiator....long story. So I ordered a new one. I ordered one for a wide nose FZJ79(not sure if it was for a 79 specifically or not)...complete with the shroud and all of that for the 1FZ(important because the 1FZ and 1HZ rads are 4 row vs. 3 row....I wanted that 4 row one that the 1FZ needs). It's really complicated with my #1 truck because of the supercharger and fan location. I would do things completely different if I were to do that truck again.

As I recall, the 80 series radiator is really wide......when we tried to fit it on the 79 front, it didn't appear that the front opening was going to let enough air thru. Would have been SUPER easy to use the 80 vs. the 7X rad but I was trying to build that truck with mostly all 79 stuff for some reason. Live and learn.

80 series rad in the frame....
