My luck is running as usual. Got the driver side hub on, went to install the wheel/tire and it won't clear the hub ! Rock Warriors, hole in the wheel is 3 1/8" and the hub is 3 1/2". Using 1 1/4" spacers. They must have made different size Rock Warriors. Anyone else run into this ?
Not sure its been discussed yet, but how much slop is expected in the driveline after installing the kit? Im having mine slam when putting it in gear, and ive checked my u-joints and they look fine
I don't have any noticeable difference in the way the truck shifts. No clunk or slam when I shift into drive or reverse. No difference whether 4 wheel drive is engaged or not. Sometimes there is a decent clunk when I dissengage the "center locker" and drop out of four wheel drive. But, nothing serious, I don't think. Just feeling the gears release.
I just want to add my support to the comments about the difference in how the truck drives on the road. I also watched that video before I purchased the kit and, after 5 years and a lot of miles, I think that guy is just too grumpy for his own good. It's hands down my favorite mod. Take that with a grain of salt, because everyone's needs are different. But, for me and where I live and how I use my Cruiser, it's absolutely a benefit.
I freak'n love rolling down the windows, getting out and locking the hubs, then slowly rolling forward and listening to them click in. I know I'm weird, but, hearing them engage like that just warms my heart.

I broke down and ordered Transfer Case low gears and Spool Part - time 4x4 conversion Spool / Hubs from Marks 4x4 in Austria. Surprising, I will have the parts 5 days from Marks 4x4. About 1200 US dollars shipped. Marks claim they made reinforcements to the AVM Freewheeling HUBs to prevent failures with front locker. They had the parts in stock, so I ordered them. With my new wheels, the hubs will complete the finished look.
Couple thoughts from installing the Aisin hubs from Cruiser Teq/Cruiser Outfitters part-time kit (TC spool going in soon). Couple lessons learned the hard way:
1) Make sure the round and star-shaped gaskets are installed in the correct locations: star between hub base and spacer, and round between spacer and outer locking lever portion.
2) Don't bear down on the small outer bolts -- just snug. I thought one needed to be a bit more snug and snapped it. No torque specs are given for it, but there a lock washer on them, so snug should be good.
3) Don't overgrease the inner spring/gear portion of the hub. There was a light coating of white grease when I got them. I packed a ton of red wheel bearing grease around the spring because the lever was not locking/unlocking easily. But this prevented the gear portion from sliding inward when turned to the lock position.
4) There are two ears on the spring/gear portion (outside lever part) of the hub. Those have to align to particular slots in the inner, stationary part of the hub. You can fully insert the outer part in the wrong orientation -- the giveaway will be that the spring can't push the gear into the inner hub portion.
5) A 3 3/4" hole saw should be exactly what is needed to make the correct hole in the center caps. I only could only round up a 3 1/2", so I filed down the rest of the way. Basically you need to remove all the way to the outer bevel on the early 16" LC wheel center caps (remove entire inner portion that the logo is on).
I'll post more after the TC spool install. Planning on replacing both output seals and the input seal while I have it apart (output i
s leaking).
for sure, I know i totally take for granted that i have been working on cruisers for close to 30 years and these things are just second nature to me. Nice job getting your hubs installed! you are going to be in love once you are true part-time.
MPG is still more about how you drive your cruiser.
pros here are:
- handling of lifted trucks
- less wear and tear on the front end
- if you blow up anything in the front end simply unlock your hubs and transfer case and drive home.
-exercise, you have to get out, walk around and lock the hubs..
Minor improvement maybe 1-3 mpg depending on conditions. Around town is not much improvement (same amount of weight to get moving) but freeway is noticable. Its the handling and driving comfort that is much improved. That alone makes it worth. Plus all the added benefits others have posted.
Full disclosure it may be the underdrive gears showing some of my mpg improvement since I did them at the same time.

No. I did the Sumo 10% underdrive gears for the high range side of the transfer case. Essentially the same as re gearing the diffs to 4.56. It made a noticeable improvement. I am running 33s on factory wheels.

the over/under drive gear folks are talking about swaps out the idler gear in the transfer case. the pitch diameter is the same but gains or loses a tooth basically to give 10%+/- it does change the wear pattern on the gears and produces some gear whine but you wont notice it over general road noise most likely. i only hear mine if i am really paying attention. way better than diff gears in my opinion.
