When you happen to drive the truck that sits most of the time without checking the oil (even when it doesn't leak) bad things can happen.

Thanks to a good deal from Tim (TemeculaTim) and some quality storage options from Pat (landcruisnman), I now have a new project to think about....

That looks either rebuilt or SUPER low miles. Will be an excellent upgrade.

Spent the last 45+ min going over your thread. Truck looks fantastic, I applaud you for keeping it relatively stock-ish looking. What are the plans for the motor? Any mods to it before putting it in?

The rig is running right now and I can putt it around town but no freeway driving I'm afraid. High rpm's is when it gets really noisy.

I was always planning on some kind of motor upgrade because of the lack of power. I don't need much but after driving it to Mammoth I realized any grades were trouble. The 3 speed didn't help. Now my timeline has been advanced a bit.

The motor comes from a reliable source and is in great shape. I may have the head redone and some seals too but as it sits it's very clean. So no determination on that yet.

In a perfect world I would add the 3FE to the 3 speed column shift and add a 60 series power steering setup. Drive it like that for awhile. Then after confirming column linkage fit I would start on a 4 speed column shift setup I've been considering. If that becomes a no go at any point I would just use a speed floor shift.

Either way it's going to retain the stock-ish look. I enjoy the "fresh off the farm" look and don't want to lose that even if it's got something newer and Toyota under the hood.

Don't hold your breath on this project though... the motor was palleted, wrapped, and forklifted to a safe overhead storage location.

For now...

No reason you can't put the 3FE in front of the 3-speed. It will bolt up.

What do you have now? I'm confused.

I'm confusing. I have a 3 speed column shift behind the original motor with 62k original miles.

Afraid the 3FE manifold or exhaust will interfere with the column shift linkage. I have searched but not found anyone posting up about a 3FE and column shift.

Only one way to find out :)

You could make some headers similar to the 6-1 commonly installed on 2F's. Wouldn't be too hard with the right resources. Although the they wouldn't flow as well as the stock manifolds (nothing does) it would kill more then a couple horsepower (you won't notice over the difference in driveability) and it will be WAY easier to build the rest of your exhaust off it.

Thinking about making headers for mine too.

dom I would just figure out the shift linkage and leave it in. If it were me I would install a 4spd on the floor but I am not a fan of the column shift, but understand you want to leave things as they are. You should be able to alter the rods on the column shift to work somehow with the 3FE. I know a good exhaust guy if you need one. Since you are desmog you won't have to worry about that crap and can think out of the box quite a bit.

I ran column shift with the 2 piece headers on a 71 FJ40 ......the common 6into1 header didn't clear
