Just curious, What is your MPG on you're FJ40?

Curious what the @GA Architect is getting with his sniper?
I posted this a while back on my first extended drive with the Sniper:

Trip time: 10 hours (+/-)
Road time: about 5.5 hours (+/-)
Miles: 200 miles (10% highway & 90% back-roads)
Fuel consumption: 14.4 gallons
Mileage: 13.88 mpg

Is this a gain....probably not enough to mention? Also, verses my office Corolla, I just don't think about MPG's. :hillbilly:

I know what it's not getting, Dirty!

SEE PHOTO BELOW!!!!!! I count, NOT 1, NOT 2.....BUTTTT 3 very-very LARGE PIECES OF D-I-R-T-Y on my rig!!!!!!! ----GO FISH in a cold mountain stream, mister Montana!

So far, I average about 12 on the highway with the Sniper+Hyperspark, running 32's and the 4 speed.

It's still early in break-in though, and I haven't twiddled too much with timing control yet past mimicking the stock curve. I'll be doing some more tuning once it warms up and the salt washes off the roads...

Driving evenly on road to speed up to 70mph I get on a regular basis 16.5l/100km (14.7mpg).

Driving to the freeway speedlimit of 80mph and up will get my fuel consumption to go over the 20l/100km (11.7mpg).
The absolute maximum I measured between 2 filled-up with a lot of lowspeed offroad was 35l/100km (6.7mpg).

Note that my truck doesn't have freewheeling hub in the front and the carb has not been redone yet since 1974 so it idles to 950rpm, probably some mpg to win here.

Otherwise a stock 1974 FJ40 with F.5, Aisan carb, H41, 3.70 diff, 7.50R16 mud tires.

79 2f , stock carb, desmoged , 1970's chevy ignition module, 31" tires, tuned via 02 sensor downstream of header collector.
Best 18.3 mpg two lane 45-55 mph.
Usually 16.5-17 mpg mixed city/4 lane
Worst 10.5mpg pushing snow

miles per gallon, oh you mean gallons per mile. i rather measure smiles per mile in mine.

Chevy 327 V8, Holley carb, 4sp……8mph. Fast, slow doesn’t matter.
But I never have thought “I could use more power”.

10 mpg is about all I get. On or off road, stuck in traffic or on the freeway it doesn't matter. Spent many thousands of dollars at the gas pump over the last couple of decades, probably double what my 40 is worth. No complaints though, it gets me where I need to go.

De-smogged 2F, stock Aisin carb, H41, 3.70 diffs, 33" tires: 10-12 mpg around town, 14 on the highway. Once on a long trip with a tail wind, I got 15 mpg. Never checked it again after that first trip.

My 45 gets 19-20 mpg at 70-80 mph. I get 25 mpg at 55 mph. I run a 12HT, 5 speed, 4:11’s on 33” tires.

last i paid attention 15-16mpg.
33s 2f 4spd 3:70s, with a nonusa carb.

Before I pulled it, the SBC got 15 mpg once. I never measured it again. 35” overdrive, 4.11 gear & no overdrive. Still dialing in the 5.3, but I got 18mpg once…

interesting ive driven many fj40s since 1971 and never checked the mileage on any of them .going by when i put gas in them m y 501 caddy with aoutmatic and 17/40s got the best

78 fj40.

4 speed
3:70
35 bfg
2F with 44 k on my rebuild,,
Asian carb tuned to 14.7 AFR ,,
utilizing de accele fuel cut,,

nets me an average of 16 MPG ,,, personal goal I have set for my self is 18 ,,, not sure I’ll get there,,,

I Wanna try adding an EGR back on to improve part throttle cruise

She pulls strong and is happy at 60 Mph ,, not looking to go much faster then that,,

I Have a 5 speed for this girl ,,, but that’s a long term project

Does EGR make a difference in MPG?

Honestly I’m not exactly positive,,

But I run an O2 censor on my 40 and monitor my AFRs and I’m willing to experiment,,,

in theory I think it would improve MPG

EGR is supposed to operate at part throttle/ light cruise,,,

In doing so it’s supposed to feed the inert gasses back in to the intake

Because they are inert it shouldn’t lean out my mixture,,, just displace the need volume of the air fuel charge…

My sticker said 11-18 MPG back in 1978. Most of the time it got 11 mpg and I only remember getting 18 mpg and that was coming home from skiing in Jackson Hole in 4 wheel drive.

It did not matter if I was a stock or using the Rochester 2 jet carb with a header. I even replaced the distributor that did not have a vacuum retard.

When we drove to SLC to get a Celica the MIL was driving when they picked me up at work and we had to stop in Evanston to fill up because she was burning way more gas the when I drove. I drive from Green River, WY to SLC with stopping for fuel. I never let her drive it again.
