Mine was consistent no matter if I was on the highway or in town. Best it ever did was coming home from skiing in Jackson Hole in 4wd and got 18 still don't understand how that happened. May have been my speed.
In my part of the country the small tank and poor mileage some gas stations are not that close and had to keep an eye on the gauge.
I keep a sticky on the dash with mileage of last fill-up and when to do it again (150 miles only, to be safe). Since my aux tank is temporarily out of commission, I have to be way more anal, ... and I don't trust that 50 year old gauge, nor the sender unit.
I found out the hard way that even during hunting season Salmon, ID did not have gas stations open before the automated pumps were in most places. I think I filled up in Thornton, WA and made it to Lead, ID taking the highway over Lolo pass to I-15 then south to Du Boise, ID. I did not listen and drive to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho then take the interstate across northern ID.

I cant see the Tetons but I can see the Winds, Owl Creeks and Green Mountain near Muddy Gap.
I moved to PA and spent 10 years there until the property taxes put me down town Bagdad to pay the taxes.
