Tried searching the forum with no luck. If a link exists, please post below and disregard my post; however:

I am wanting to swap my factory radio for an aftermarket double din with a screen and apple play (probably alpine, kenwood or Sony).

I have heard there is an internal amp which could cause issues but I may stand corrected. Anyone have any experience as I am just used to pulling a sterero, buying an adapter cord and faceplate and do an install in about an hour or less.

So, there are a million threads on this topic but I'm thinking you probably just didn't end up using the right keywords. I've been building a list of threads and resources in a onenote since I am in the same boat as you, so I'll just paste what I have here so far and let you investigate.

In no particular order, here's my list. It may or may not apply to you, since I gathered this info for a 2001 LX 470.

------------------------------------

Notes:
- Amp passes power to headunit on ML system (so if you remove the amp, then what?). Seems like the amp and the headunit share a common ground + ACC, at least on nakamichi system, so would need to find a ground for the HU.
- All speaker grounds are tied together and passed to the amp. They are not separate. You have to run new speaker wires from the headunit to the replacement amp.
- Use spade connectors for everything, so when you screw it up it's an easy fix
- sounds like my car has single voice coil sub setup

THIS IS YOUR MASTER THREAD: Is there a way to replace 2001 LX470 Mark Levinson stereo system?
1. Remove old system
2. Fit the TYTO-01 wiring harness (which has instructions with it)
3. Connect the TYTO-01 to the head unit
4. Fit the head unit in along with the filler plate

Good info on wiring from TLCFAQ which outlines what wires to tie together underneath the seat when bypassing the amp (since the HU gets power from the amp):

You don't mention year, or LC/LX. From what I understand, aftermarket harnesses for (at least some of) the LX are either unavailable (or very hard to find), while the LC harnesses are readily available.

On our 2000 TLC, we found we could use:

One of these these three, if we were going to try and keep the OEM amplifier:
Metra 70-8113 Amp Integration
DNF 70-8113 Amp Integration
BEST KITS BHA8113 Amp Integration

One of these if we were planning on bypassing the OEM amplifier and using speaker outputs from the head unit:
Metra 70-8116 Amplifier Bypass
These to adapt aftermarket speakers to OEM harness:
Metra 72-8104

We found these available on Crutchfield/Amazon/eBay

"The stock amp is dual channels for the subwoofer meaning it pushes out separately for L and R. That's why I am using a Dual Voice Coil subwoofer (2 sets of wires)."

Replaced stock sub with aftermarket sub in stock enclosure
Confirmed fit: Pyle PLPW6D
post 34 - "just measured it, i don't think it will fit anything deeper than 3".Thanks for the great instructions, in case if anyone who has a LX470 with Mark Levinson package, I took out the woofer and seems like there is only one pair of wires on the speaker and the harness. So now I am not sure whether I need a DVC or single voice coil speaker. I will get a multimeter to measure the ohms later..."
post 49 - "Update for mid 2012. The bazooka and other speakers that are 8 ohm and this shallow to fit in the Mark Levinson box have been discontinued and simply don't exisit any longer to fit in this tight spot. I tried the JL Audio 6W3v3-8 and it is too deep as well. It was the the only 8 ohm 6 inch speaker I could even find that was close."
post 61 - "Here are a couple of pictures showing the Mark Levinson Sub taken out and the Ohm rating of ~13. The replacement Audiopipe speaker as previously mentioned after some resistors getting added to it gets around 12 Ohms before being put back. This was put into a 2001 LX470." (note, this is the second pic i've seen of the ML sub, it's single voice coil)
post 76 - "This jives perfectly with my previous post. The DC resistance of the coil being 13.1 means that the rated impedance is about 16 Ohms. That's one coil. If you wire the two coils of that speaker in parallel, that makes 8 Ohms. If the enclosure has a sticker that says 7.5 Ohms/25 Watts, then that tells you the coils are indeed wired in parallel, and the amp is almost certainly mono with two sets of leads. The difference between the sticker at 7.5 or the estimated impedance of 8 is relatively insignificant."
post 133 - Last summer I swapped all OEM speakers for the following: Front doors: Infiniti 6030CS , Rear doors: Infiniti 6032CF, Rear sub: Pyle PLPW6D
I was not happy with the Pyle sub, it sounded like s***. So I want to add an amp and better sub....but not sure how to handle it.

Title says “01” but I did not mention the model.

2001 LC 100 series non-Navi

At least it's non-nav. I think you probably have the JBL stereo with the 5.25"s in the door (edit: or maybe Nakamichi?), whereas my 01 LX has the Mark Levinson with 6.5"s. Your JBL amp is going to have different pinouts than the ML, but I can't elaborate on which. I've just heard that. A lot of the links above should get you well on your way, to start.

If you are just changing the head unit it is easy. Metra makes a harness and you are good to go. You may need an antenna splitter though but they are cheap.

You are correct. When I first read OP's post for some reason I thought he wanted to bypass the amp. Yeah, the harness makes it plug n play, if you don't want to mess with the rest of the stuff.

Went with a kenwood instead of a double din with a screen so that way I can mount my cb below it.

A lot of times using that harness to maintain factory amp leads to some pretty nasty inteference...typically you end up bypassing the amp.

Factory amp is useless, your aftermarket stereo will pump out more power than that amp will.

I bypassed the amp too so I never ran it with a new head unit.

In my 1998 LX, installation is complete except for light dimmer...can anyone tell me where to connect the light dimmer wire from my head unit? It is blinding at night and a total pain to manually dim and return to bright in the morning.

Easier to use Google than Mud search IMO.

Use the "site" command operator: double din 100 series site:ih8mud.com

Good morning,
Here is the schematic from an 02 LC. I am sure yours is pretty close. You tap your head unit dimmer wire into the Green wire. It comes off of plug C9 terminal 10, which is plug "D" on the schematic. I have attached a photo of the back of your controller and you can see "D" is labeled.

@TXSunDevil ok, that's it, you convinced me. Just ordered the '01 LX 470 FSM vol 1/2 and EWD on ebay. I know the EWD is pretty similar to the 2004 FSM floating around on the internet... but with the AHC in my LX and this huge stereo project coming up, time is money and I think the original manuals are money well spent.
