Also: Yakima towers, 58” apart.... 2 of them. Strong enough? move closer together?. Or get a 3rd for the center?

Sorry I'm all into it and clogging up the thread - perhaps a new "discussion" thread or something... I'll shut up now.

I’m going to use 2, but my 100 has the middle factory support on the side rails...so that should help a little. I thought about getting another bar and set of railgrabs, but can’t find just one.

You are not planning to permanantly mount to the factory rack are you?

Yep. I have Yakima crossbars. The side rails should be ample. 3 down points. I have read on Mud where some have been doing it for years.

Might be easier to keep everything in this thread....the thread has served its purpose and now we can see what everyone is doing as far as lighting, etc.

I found these.....there is a discount code that sells them at $12.99 (Amazon code) if you get on Snagshout.....it gives a bunch of discounts to random stuff.

I have decided to run the Yakima crossbars. I have 2 sets so running three bars won’t be a problem. As heavy as the tents are I might even run all 4 bars.

If you end up running 3 let me know. Are you using railgrabs or the gutter mounts?

How heavy are these? ~200#s or so?

I think it's ok. The dynamic weight limit of yakimas is 165 - but the static limit is way more. It's a heavy tent, but I don't think it's more than about 150 lbs.

The tent comes with 8 bolts to mount into the rails (2 for each mounting point) so you'll need 4 more bolts, 4 more sliding rail thingys, and 2 more scab plates if you want to do 3 crossbars.

I just don’t understand the whole concept. The aluminum bard are strong enough to hold the tent to a rack but cannot hold it to a set of tower? I will think that the weight transfer is the same either way. All the smart people here. Help me.

The answer lies inside this old book I keep by my desk, use it a lot for work. There are smart people, and then there are “googlart” people (google-smart). I am the latter!

My take is that the Toyota roof racks themselves are not as strong of a mounting point as aftermarket rails/towers. I know how easily the rack pulled off my green 80 years ago.

EDIT: Somebody in the club, who I don't want to jinx my mentioning his name, has been mounting one to the factory rack without issue for a year, but it does not look happy up there and I'd hate to see it filled with human weight.

I don't consider myself one of the smart ones but 'll take a stab at it. The question is not whether the the aluminum tent channels are strong enough. It's whether two Yakima load bars are enough to distribute the load to the truck. It's not an issue if you are using a full rack because your rack probably has three or four mount points on each side to even out the load to the gutters. Only using two load bars concentrates the stress to four small points on the truck gutters. This situation can be handled by adding a third load bar (for a total of 6 mount points). The problem is the tent mfg only supplies enough hardware to mount to two load bars or two cross bars on a full rack. If you installed that third load bar in the middle, you would need some additional hardware. You could include the third bar as a load handler and not attach the tent to it but it might rattle with no hardware.

I would not mount this tent to a factory roof rack. No way. No how.

Honestly, I have seen several videos of folks mounting other tents this size with only two load bars and I doubt it will be a problem at all. I have a flat rack already. I'm not using Yakima load bars so I'm not worried about mine.

So are we talking about just 80’s. How About the 100 series rack?

I can’t find a straight answer but have seen several 100 racks with a RTT.

Some of these guys took the middle down support off. I think if you have the middle support (not sure if the LXs have those) it should be good....then you have weight at 6 points.

I will let you know my personal thoughts in a year. ;-)

roof top tent on factory roof rack??

Doesn't the 100 rack mount with 3 points per channel? That helps load distribution but it's still an 20 year old assembly that been stressed an unknown amount already.
Yea it does, and I think 2 bolts per mounting point. 12 bolts total.

Maybe I can get @custyota to chime in.

I don't have a stock rack, I have the Rhino load bars. I've had no issues with my Tepui tent attached to the load bars. There are 3 mount holes on each side. Well tech 4.
