Howdy, please see the attached pics below. The seller says it's a 2H from a 1980. Need expert's opinion here to confirm if it is indeed a 2H from 1980. Greatly appreciate in advance.

Typically the B in BJ series vehicles stands for a B engine. Which is always a 4 cylinder diesel engine. H engines are always a 6 cylinder diesel and would come from an HJ series vehicle. In the picture it looks like a 4 cylinder.

Yes, the H or 2H would come from an HJ45/47. How can you tell its a 4 cylinder?

Also what about the serial plate with numbers on it? does it signify anything?

From the one picture looking down on the top it's not long enough to be a six. Count your inlet or exhaust runners. There will be either 4 or 6 of each.

The 2h was released in the hj47 in 1981 prior to this they where the h engine 3.6 liter but as above it looks like a 4 cylinder B series engine. All early Toyota engines have a marking cast into the block B, 2B H, 2H, 12HT get the seller to confirm what engine he has for sale.

(NOTE: I mis-typed in my first post when I mentioned BJ ... my mistake ... what I meant to say that the seller says its a 2H from a 1980, which must be an HJ. Correcting the first post now)

Per my past research I understood that the HJ47 started in 1980. I also understood that 1980 may have been a year where both HJ45 (with H engine) and HJ47 (with 2H engine) produced.

The seller again tells me that it is a 2H from a 1980 land cruiser.

The pic looking from top has some other stuff sitting on top of the engine and I think it's not showing the entire length of the head. I am not an expert at identifying engines but when I compare with a pic of a 2H engine I do see some similarities like the ones identified in the comparison pic below.

I looked up a 2B engine in Google images, it seems like the two bolts are much closer to the oil cap compared to the 2H engine reference pic above.

Its one of the H engines. You can see at least 5 of the injector valves on the pump if you compare pics 1 and 2.
Fuel injection, fuel filter is on the wrong side for the B engine.

These engines came in a lot of configurations due to the number of markets they were sold in and they were also used in Dynas and Coasters, may be airport equipment .
Tieing them down to a specific date can be difficult. The best way is by identifying the numbers on the fuel pump.

Thanks, great info.

I know HJ47s were built till 1984. As far as Dynas and Coasters are concerned until which year were their 2H engine produced? Did the 2H in them look exactly the same as in HJ47? How could you tell if a 2H is from HJ vs. Dyna or Coaster?

Also, is there a way to tell that this particular engine is pre-1984?

Theres a casting number on the side of the block sorta just behind the oil filter. Early (80-84) will have 58010, and late 2h's will have 58020/58030. Also, if you can get a picture of the front of the motor, the timing cases were different between early and late 2H's

Image of the early doesn't seem to want to work, but it doesn't have the bolt in the middle of the LHS of the timing cover, and is shaped differently around the crank

Thanks roscoFJ73 thats a really nice pic of 2H

Does anyone know if the 093000-0250 number on the pump could help date this engine?

Does it really matter? The only major difference in 2H engines is that 1984 and earlier had sleeved cylinders and 1985+ weren't sleeved. Both had issues with the top compression ring buggering up the pistons after a couple hundred thousand km.

I played with that number on google, usually you can find something, but not much this time. I did find a Russian site where someone was seeking info( I think) about a pump with the same number 6 years ago. Scraping the bottom of the barrel now.:D.

I don't know much about the diesels used in buses and trucks. But they are often 24volt and sometimes the air intakes point in different directions. Some of the Landcruiser 2H are also 24v.
