Some POs will remove the gate that will not allow you to shift into low gear in 2wd. Make sure it’s in 2 High.
Then it would top out at about 25mph.

Pretty sure it's not an issue. When I was testing the brakes for the first time I ran it suspended in 2H, 4H and 4L and the wheels all turned correctly.

My hunch is the carb. But I have a laundry list of things to check and report back.

@brian I haven't checked. It's on the list.

I guess I need more details of “can’t drive 55”

Will it flat on the floor, 4th gear, flat road - not reach 55 mph? Or you don’t feel comfortable reving it high enough to get to 55mph?
That’s what I was wondering.

Even with my dog poo Weber, I can eventually get up to 65-70 on BFG 33’s.

As I like to say, 0-60 in 3to 5 business days.

My engine is newer at a ripe April of 1980, but everything else is stock as far as I know.

I’ll say that it took some faith to be able to consistently just attempt to keep up on MoPac.
I drove her for close to 1,000 miles this summer from NM to solid axle and back, sometimes cruising in the mid 70’s. Do look at my tach (auto meter 4k) more than use my ears I think.

My guess is like above, you aren’t pushing her as hard as she can be pushed.
Let me take her for a spin 😉.

Also, a digital timing light that shows RPMs is a really handy diagnostic tool. You can come check out mine.

My ‘75 2F is set at 12* timing and 32*WOT but the Sniper/Hyperspark display makes that easy to look for. After reading all of the comments …to me it sounds like you may not be getting the advance you think you are. If everything else checks out. I also have a Weber carb that came off of the truck when I added the EFI and would happily send it to you to try if you wanted to see a comparison between it and the Rochester.

Any guy who loves food and dogs it good in my book!. Let me know. pm me if you want

Buy or borrow a decent timing light that has multiple functions, volts, tach, dwell, and an adjustable timing strobe light. The adjustable timing function allows you to adjust the timing to a specific degree of timing advance, instead of guessing while pointing a basic light at a bb and pointer. It also allows you to see if the distributor is operating properly and see when the mechanical advance is all in, along with vacuum advance.

Flat road, 4th gear, foot on the floor, 45-48 MPH. The revs sound high, but I'll report back with data after I install the tach.

It's this weekend's project. :)

That is a generous offer, thank you. Let me clear the backlog of requests for more data and then we can look at next steps.

Can you recommend a model that fits the bill?

I am using a simple timing light and separate tach/dwell meter.

Your transfer case is in LO range. A guy here got married and drove his BJ40 all the way across Canada in 4LO.
Couldn't figure out why his truck wouldn't go over 45 mph
