OK, Ali shamed me into looking into chains for an upcoming run, to be determined later. So, looking on the tirechain.com site, I have the choice of cable, square link (5.5 mm straight link), and heavy duty (7.14mm cross link) All are less than $100. Slightly over with shipping. Any advice of what works best?
Thanks in advance.
Paul

I'd go for the heavy duty...

Do the heavy duty have cam locks? If not, go square link.

I'd like to know what Evan, Onur, Jon and Sarah ran with on Saturday. I think all but Sarah had square links and they worked great. Sarah had V bar chains and they looked like they can climb a tree! Greg's chains were larger than everyone else's  but w/o camlocks. I think camlocks is the way to go with tire chains. I have straight link with camlocks and have no complaints.

I think it's a tough call. Bigger links gets more traction in the super deep stuff at the risk of a rough ride on hard pack stuff. Airing down the tires absorb quite a bit of the roughness.

Make sure that you have enough clearance between the chains and other suspension/body parts. This may make the decision easier!

Nice pics and video Ali!

I think Dad will make it a priority to be there next year, with the 40... The video sure shows how slick that little hill was better than the pics can (although Brian's album is pretty good at that too).

looks like fun. I was burning woodpiles in 3" of snow in Los Alamos while y'all were having fun getting trees. I did take the diesel troopy up to the other La Cueva (near Pecos) last week in the mud and snow to get a tree.

Juane--when did you get a boring white 80 again? i thought it was forever printed, and I loved it.

So did she take it??? That is just being polite if you are from Cuba... :D

Dunno. She claims that she politely refused. Then she went into great detail describing the bottle and the purple felt bag with gold thread and the Crown Royal logo. She was much happier on the drive back to Jemez Springs.

My understanding is that it is not a good idea to air down when chained. Something about potential sidewall damage, I think. I could be wrong however.

Where to buy chains in albuquerque?

Sure did not need any Saturday, but I may need some to get home.

Can't wait to go again soon. If we can belive the weather reports, there should be a ton of snow in the mountains after this week.

Hopefully we will have another snow run in January (unless some others want to go out next weekend or so - should be plenty of snow then...)

I might be up for another run next weekend.

If you order on Monday, should be good to go for next weekend.:D

Should we start another thread and go to Paliza this weekend?

I bought the square links with camlocks from tirechains.com. I was very impressed and will plan to bring them on every snow run from now on. They are not quite as beefy as the heavy duty chains, but I wanted to keep the profile as low as possible, since I can get some rubbing on the back wheels under full articulation. But they appear to be very strong and weren't too bad to install. I'll get faster with more practice!Paul - the guys at tirechain.com did not recommend the cable chains once I explained how they would be used. I think anything from the square link choice up (more heavy duty) should be fine, depending on how much clearance you've got. If you have questions, give them a call - I thought they were very helpful on the phone.

Paul,
You may have clearance issues up front. I did with my truck, because of the IFS components. You should try a pair from someone else to see if you have any clearance issues before you buy the front.

My set ( ones Sarah used) came from Carquest. IIRC they were ~160 bucks for the pair.

Thanks Ron, I really didn't think of that, I do rub a bit on the left side at full-lock on the front. However, maybe I am not thinking right, but I was planning on one-set for the rear. Do most of you run sets on front and rear?

Rear only, at this point.

Juane - Too late for this trip of yours, but we have been using tirechains.com and they have been a great company to work with - reasonable prices and good customer service. They even have multiple choices of chains for 35 inch tires.Be careful on the road when you do head home!Evan
