Differentials? SIGH. Guess Ill be looking that one up too :crybaby:

Differentials are what's inside the pumpkins (big round things almost in the middle of your axles). You already checked the oil in them...
But, if they both oozed oil out of the top (fill) plug, I'd bet you have some water in them. Unless the PO overfilled them.
So, pull the drain plugs and see if water comes out first.
Oh, and never pull a drain plug until you get the fill plug out first...

Check! The huz guided me through it - good to go on all counts.

Rust? I don't see any rust...

Drive that baby is my vote.

For headlights, check out Roundeyes headlights and check with Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters about the ARB/IPF headlight relay upgrade.

For parts, take pictures as you take stuff off, that way it goes back together easier later! :)

I found the Sylvania Silverstar headlights to be a good upgrade (put them on a relay) - 7 years and counting

I dont do any offroading...YET.I believe in getting good quality items that will last. I hate cheap fixes that will cause future headaches.Yet at the same time..."THE BEST" is usually too much money for me.

I pm'd cruiserdan but figured Id look around in the meantime and explore options.
What do ya'll think?

CDan doesn't sell Bilsteins - he is a Toyota parts man

search for a thread by Romer a long time ago that has info on Bilstein model and sizes people used with various combinations of lift/tires

I know, I was comparing difference in oem and possibly something 'better'..Thanks for helping me clarify my rambling question!

Leave it/Like it/Live With It?

Alrite..Im putting this to you professionals..if you saw my previous post, I pulled off the rubber matting on the driver side floorboard and have been sanding and scrubbing. The question is - right below the seat is a completely sealed black coating, brushed on - (por15, i think) and it looks well done..noting two tiny holes right at the beginning of the coating.

Should I leave this alone? Or scrape it up while Im doing the floorboard?

I have no urgent mechanical necessities to be done - so I want to get a handle on rust now..so leave it/like it...or live with it?

Take a peek at the location underneath. It looks to be fairly thin from the top. It can be patched and treated with rust converter or.....Get into it and cut out the thin area and replace. Not an extremely easy task for a novice but with patience it can be done. Then of course there is the option of Treat the rust and fill in the area with bondo, fiberglass resin etc. which is not a long term fix but it all depends how far you want to take it or just drive the stuffing out of it and have fun lol. Btw I have relatives in Luffkin and Beumont. You near either of those?

How well do I know the drawl thing. I was born in Kalifornia, my mother was from Arkansas, my father from Texas, My family originated in England then to N.C. and S.C. Alabama and Texas, After I came back from Nam I spent the next 35 years in N.C and S.C. Then in 2008 I moved to the Philippines. Now you should hear me trying to speak Filipino Tagalog with a major Southern accent and drawl Haaa haaa! I get the strangest looks and my wife says; Don't try to speak tagalog, your accent confuses them lol!:hillbilly:

Leave the holes alone for now and keep driving and enjoying your FJ40. You have very minimal surface rust in your foot wells after you removed the factory tar, that is a very good sign. Check the underside of the tub for rust and post up pictures. "Mini truck" power steering is the easiest and cheapest to install, check the FAQ about it. Power steering is one of the best upgrades you can do for everyday driving. For your rear turn signal issue, check the bulbs first then the grounds, it is usually a ground issue. If you don't have a multimeter, that is the next tool you need to purchase.

THe electrical is the fun part. Definitely a digital multi meter in your future. But, as previously stated, the issue will usually be a bad ground.

Have you looked at this vendor for Bilstein shocks?

Bilstein Shocks

I also have moved around. Born in Tehachapi, CA, grew up in Virginia, moved to Morocco, back to VA, CA and finally Arizona since '84 with many, many stops along the way.

Congrats on your new 40! You will have tons of fun working on it and driving it, with some occassional frustration thrown in as well! I had the mini truck power steering done on mine... best mod to date. Steering is a breeze now, especially having 33's on the truck. Also, when I bought it, it had Hell for Stout shocks installed. Stiff and bumpy as hell. I swear you could feel running over an ant with those shocks! I got some advise from another mudder and put some Bilstein's on. Much, much better ride now. Even the wife noticed (she could care less). Definitely some good advise on the electrical. Every problem I've had has been a ground issue. Enjoy and post lots of pics!
