I have been asked to help paint a friend's 76 FJ40 that has been pieced together and is in primer now. Basically I am in control of the project and the color is the last piece of the puzzle we have not figured out. There are three choices and two of them have not been clearly identified. Unknown blue, unknown green, and 6h9. Looking for definitive identification on the first two colors and also a vote on which you think looks best!

The first color is this:

(Here is a link with dozens of pics for identification purposes:
Premier Exotics Automobili - 1978 Toyota Landcruiser FJ40 - Stock# 265665).

I cannot determine exactly what this color code is. Some say horizon blue, some say horizontal blue. No one definitively id's a code for this grayish blue color. (I'm not talking about the light skyblue color which I have also seen called horizon blue).

Question 1: Is this T-1208 or something else?

The other two choices include this color green:

Question 2: What color green is this one?-I don't think it is Rustic Green... Is it Judson?

Or the third option is the always nice 6H9:

The listing for the blue one says Horizon Blue which is a VW color that looks close.

I just went down this road a few months ago.

There was no consistent data on the color blue for my Jan '73 model. Perusing the paint chips all over was some help, but Toyota paint chips for the 70's weren't categorized by Toyota model.

My local paint supplier was very helpful in the quest to determine what blue was the correct blue, the results are detailed below.

Note that I took this picture the same day the samples were mixed, in direct sunlight so as to be most representative of the relative differences between the blues. The 'protected from sunlight' hinge was somewhat darker than the exterior body, given the age of the vehicle.

The hinge is from my '73 FJ40 rear hatch, hidden from sunlight for most of its 42 year life. The swatch next to it is R-M file color for 808 Horizontal Blue. Given the aged paint vs. the new paint sample, I'm certain my '73 is originally horizontal blue.

The upper right is Blue Gleam 1749, represented as an official Toyota color for the 1973 time frame. My FJ40 is definitely not that color.

The bottom right is a standard R-M color, "SB015.00", which was posted by splib as noted in posts 12 and 23 here:

Need Help With Capri Blue

It's clearly a contender for Capri Blue 310.

While not officially "Capri Blue", it is definitely has more of a gray tinge than the horizontal blue.

Apparently, even having original formulations for paint colors from 40 years ago doesn't mean they'll be 'on file' with current paint manufacturers for their entire range of paint qualities. Blue Gleam was available in various grades of paint, Horizontal Blue only in the econo line of R-M paint, while the SB015.00 was available in the mid- to high-grade products.

I used the R-M SB015.00 in a single stage urethane, no clear-coat. Multiple coats, wet sand out any orange peel, easy to maintain.

After doing more research, I've seen this called cadet blue, horizon blue, horizontal blue and smoke blue. I think that will probably be the color of choice as long as we can nail down the code and paint mixture. Definitely gonna try a sample of the SB015.00 . This one is pretty close too:

I voted for 6H9 ... sweet colour ... wasn't really big on FJC Heritage Blue (especially for the last Trail Teams truck) based on pics, but it kind of grows on you when you see it in the flesh ...

Your rig probably has a 3 digit paint code on the inside passenger side fender lateral to the battery, does that list a 3 digit code?? On my '78 it is up against the firewall. Those colors do look nice!

did you use the paint code SB015.00 is it a pretty close match to the fj40 in the pic cadet blue, horizon blue, horizontal blue and smoke blue

thanks

sam

My buddy ended up doing his mustard yellow. I ended up doing mine this blue color. It took SEVERAL attempts and the t1208 and 808 and all other "horizon blues" ended up being baby blue or capri blue. I had a custom color made and it ended up looking like this:

This was more of a test spray and the lighting does not do it justice. This color looks different every time you look at it.

The last picture of the bib is the exact same color sprayed at the exact same time but under different light with the contrast of the white bezel.

Looks good. Wish I had your problem on which color to choose. My problem is which rust hole to fill..

@baldboy I sent you a message. The color you came up with is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Would you be willing to share the mix so I can try and have it made somewhere down the road? It's absolutely gorgeous.

Like others have said color is one of the hardest choices to make Looking good
