never measure mine .. but I indeed have to move cross member forward .. manual H150 ( in mi case ) it's definitely shorter than my A442F and therefore you must adjust your DS front and rear ..

I haven't been moving very quick on purchases for this project, Joel. I have a bit more saving to do before the book keeper is gonna allow big purchases like the gearbox.
Also, since my will-be work shop is currently storage for 1000 straw bales I'm patiently waiting for spring when the bales will be moved and I will have access to the space to do my veggie conversion and the H151f swap, whether or not I tack on the trans rebuild to the project as well.
I've actually been pretty focused and stumped on the uber rare '90-'94 RHD manual front box console for the VX trim.
It was disco'd so they are only available used. Now, since most of the RHD manuals are in Australia or UK and seem to be DX or GXL poverty packs, they lack the front box console.
I may resort to butchering one of the newer year boxes to make it fit, or building my own completely custom front console box. Which does have possible advantages.

!
Can anyone verify the 70mm movement forward for the cross member new position for H151 with 1FZ-FE engine? I see you guys doing that with the H151 and diesels, but not sure if both engines will put the transmission mount in the same place. I see the forward holes in the frame for the adjusted position, just wanna be sure these are for gas engined 80 also. give me a reference measurement?

Thanks,
Joel

Joel

It should be the same (70mm) forward for the gassers.
The EPC shows the same front drive shaft for all 80.

Just weld in 2 nuts in the existing holes. The ATM crossmember can be reused if you remove the spacer plates and elongated the holes.

Thanks for the info Landcrusher, I figured it was but I'd hate to do all that grinding/welding to have it be off. Good info on the front drive shaft as well, appreciate that. My only worry was that the slip yoke may bottom out when the suspension was fully compressed, but your part number check makes me feel better. I'll have the machine shop stretch the rear one once I get a good measurement. Dana, hear you on the finances! If I can't get the used one it will be quite a large chunk of change to purchase the new box. I'm committed though, my auto box is dead so now is the time!! I'll keep my eyes peeled for a front console box.

Well, finally got my grubby hands on an H151 along with some extra parts! Work is underway.......finally.

Clutch pedal and master cylinder fit no problem, did have to relocate one box under the dash to clear enough space. May have to move what looks to be a resister of some sort along the left side to make space for the clutch tube (hard line) running out and down to the release cyllinder.

Installed flywheel and working to relocate the crossmember support brackets forward, welding the new nuts in existing frame holes after slipping them into the box frame via access holes. I figure this way I'd utilizing more of the frame metal strength. Auto crossmember bolts right into the new location once the spacers are removed from it.

My stock full time viscous coupled transfer from the A442F bolts right onto this H151 with no compications. Waiting for the remaining parts from Akella, he is helping me to get all the remaining parts, even rebuild kits for that master cylinder with the large funky accumulator!

I'll post more as the final parts arrive and more comes together.

More pics of the crossmember relocation project, nuts with some space cut in to facilitate welding in from the bottom. Picture of my unusual master with accumulator.

Well, finally got my grubby hands on an H151 along with some extra parts! ....

Ok... I am looking to source an H151 etc etc for a swap into my 45LV behind either a 2UZ or 1FZ... can you clue me in to your source and any details you care to share?

I got lucky with the transmission, a guy who lives in San Fran had posted an H151 for sale quite a while back. I contacted him and worked out that I could arrange a pick up as he was not interested in shipping the tranny. Just so happened that he had many other parts I needed! As you've seen in other posts in this thread, some of us have been trying sourcing through Oz, yet shipping is very expensive. New conversion parts are easy to come by through Akella or Japan 4x4, and you can buy a new H151 through them as well. Used was quite difficult. I talked with some folks in Canada on tranny sourcing without much luck, seems H151's are not too common up there.

Any of you swap guys have a successful method for wiring in the reverse lights to the manual transmission reverse switch? I've got some ideas of what to try, just wanted to see what others have done.

Haven't done mine yet. Tapage provided me with this:

in the H150 and H151 drivers side ( LHD ) on the side of the
tranny the reverse connector ( white plug ). What it does, is it
provide ground when you shift reverse in the manual tranny .. but the
Auto harness expect +12V to light up the R circuit ( dash and reverse
lights ) so I did small simple relay circuit to provide that, that use
ground from the H150/H151 reverse sender to activate relay ..

Okay, thanks for the info on that Landcrusher, will most likely rig up something similar. Any other electrical surprises that you came upon once running this conversion? I know you're running a diesel but our years are both OBD I I'm guessing so in better shape than the guys trying to do a conversion with the OBD II system.

No other electrical issues. The neutral safety switch switch has to be addressed: I had a spare AT transmission harness that I cut up (gray round plug) and soldered wires to it. They were route under the dash to an OEM ATM PWR/MAN switch. Plugged into the engine harness and the truck fired right up. When I want to engage the cruise control I simply have to push the MAN switch to disengage the NSS. Serves as an effective theft deterrent too.

As far as the clutch release cylinder goes (slave cylinder), does it need a return spring of some sort to collapse the cylinder after you have released the clutch? I'm used to this on my 40 to draw the throwout bearing away from the clutch cover. Does this setup just release pressure and keep the throwout bearing riding on or very close to the clutch cover tangs? Thanks, Joel

Got it, thanks. Yeah I don't see one in the H151 manual either, just wanted to be sure. Does it seem like the throwout bearing backs off the clutch on its own then or is it always being spun by the clutch cover?

What are you guys getting for resistance across your manual transmission reverse switches? I was expecting continuity but I seem to be getting around 200 ohms. I found the power for the automatic trannys position switch on pin #2 of the a442f harness plug, and got the reverse lights plus R light on the dash with power applied to pin #8 of the same plug. Was hoping to simply loop this circuit through the reverse switch on the H151. You guys said something about a ground, but I don't see the switch grounding, unless it was provided on one of the plugs pins in other 80s harnesses.

Also...got everything in and started the truck, my H151 is pretty noisy as well, sounds a lot like landcrushers video of his minus the diesel noise. You ever find the source?

That's exciting, man. Glad you finally got your hands of that gearbox.
I was excited, in a slightly masochistic fashion, to notice a bit of a clunk when I shifted my a442f into reverse. Maybe my conversion will become a pressing necessity, instead of just a project. :steer:
I'm curious about the time frame: How long now has your conversion been underway? And how much time per day or week are you able to put into it? Besides tackling these electrical gremlins, were there any other obstacles?
