Talked to Paradise Auto today. $2250 for the gearbox w/ xfer case. $1650 w/o. Those prices are AuS. And they will ship. These are out of wrecks. When I asked the condition he said "we can't test them but we look on the positive, it was working when the car got into the accident!". :eyerolls:

I once bought a used H55F and xfer for my 60 from Marv Spector (RIP) that he said came out of an OZ rig. He said it should be OK. I installed it, only to find out it was in clear need of a rebuild. I sold it back to Marv and ended up buying a brand new unit elsewhere. It can be crap-shoot. fyi.

Man that's a tough call now. That price from Paradise is pretty sweet compared to the brand new unit, but the risk? Brand new will run for a very long time without any worries. Used will need a rebuild immediately or after some time but is something that can be done yourself with a $400-$600 rebuild kit. I guess it is a total c--p shoot, could run for a long time without trouble since it was working fine before the crash or worn completely out.

Exactly. Which leads to the question, why the swap? And for me it's as much about the pulling wrench part of the project as having a manual transmission in the end. So, really the rebuilding could be another part of the exercise, which i would do with that used tranny regardless. Especially since it might take a while to source some of the other parts, unless you order them all from Japan4x4 or similar.
Man, there are a lot of ins and outs to this project!

Also, a follow up email from Spector in regards to a 5 spd conversion kit
"We do not have a kit for the 80 Series. It would have to be individual parts. A lot of these parts we do not have here used. The parts that are still avail new would have to be sourced from Japan. This normally takes 3 to 5 months for delivery. The fly wheel we can not get (discontinued) The parts minus trans/transfer is aprox $1400"

I haven't received any good info from Specter on this swap, I don't think they are receiving any H151 related parts, at least for a while. I'm going to go with Dave at Japan4x4 for swap parts, he seems extremely knowledgeable about the parts required and very willing to help, and they will be new OEM! Cruiserparts has some items listed on their website, but not sure what is in stock. I'm going to try and see if Paradise can pull a fly wheel off of that 1FZ-FE engined 80 if I decide to order a used gearbox from them. Did they mention any shipping costs?

Is the flywheel off a 1HZ compatible between the H151F and 1HD-T?

Flywheel itself it's the same .. just different disc matching surface 275mm vs 300mm

Copy that, so it's the clutch plate and pressure plates you specify the 275 vs 300mm sizes. I noticed in your Marilu write up that the 300mm clutch was one of your goals. Care to expand on that?

Yes, I do have the 1FZ-FE gas engine, and not sure about the diesel flywheels. I do know that I need a specific flywheel that has a 10 bolt pattern, and I'm pretty sure it mates up to the 300mm clutch setup. H151 has 14 spline shaft which also connects to 300mm clutch. I think Tapage used a H150 that has a different shaft going into a 275mm clutch setup? I'm sure he can clarify this. Gas engine bell housing different too, I' pretty sure.

Facts/anecdotes from when I went down this road last fall:

Spector quoted me $10K to build me a kit. This was all used parts

Japan 4x4 and akella are similar in price to each other for new assembly units

Akella can still get the flywheel.

Cruiser Parts say they can get stuff but never followed through quoting.

Akella and Japan 4x4 were very on the ball

Console only available in grey

Right hand drive clutch pedals will have to be modified to work on the left

Better off to order the hydraulic lines than make you own

The total cost I sorted before I decided to keep my auto was $7400 for new stuff where it made sense. Clutch, pressure plate, box, cylinders, console etc etc

Dave from japan 4x4 told me he sells a lot of rebuild kits for used units.

Correct used ECU from Aus isn't more than $150.00

For that price I've decided to spend about 1/3 of it on new tc reduction gears, Rodney valve body, and lock up switch. I have another truck that is a manual tranny that deserves just as much attention and the savings will go there

Wow, thanks for the break down!
I can see why you decided the way you did.

I do have the idea of just trying to find a low mileage manual in an auction out of japan, probably wouldn't be much more than the total cost of the conversion. But that takes some of the fun out of the project!

to Clarify ..

1. 1FZ and 1HD/1HZ flywheels are different ( other than matching surfaces ) due to # of bolts to the crank

2. Yup since I was ( and actually did ) planning power upgrades to my 1HD-T I want 300mm clutch what I did was 300mm PP ( stock for 1HD-T H151 combo ) and 300mm disc 21 splines from Izusu, since the 300mm disc from Mr. T as comment it's 14 splines and my H150 it's 21 fine splines ..

Another option to accomplish that it's using Exedy parts .. ( which I also have at my place waiting to be installed )

Just to clarify, the bell housing and fly wheel are for diesel engines?

Edited my post above #35. It read like akella and Japan 4x4 were similar in price to SOR. Not so and this is now corrected
