Just to keep this moving, a guy over on Peachparts (MB forum) told me I couldn't replace the rear main w/o pulling the motor ... Had to prove him wrong . What a motherf'n PITA to get that upper pan off!




Started removing everything form the split-case to clean up the housing:

I hit my notched pan with a 4" lift, I'd say your going to need to notch it. Manny got away with not, but he used different motor mounts -

The notch is in the lower pan at the bottom of the second pic, the whole right side that is smooth and gray is a raises 1/2 below the mating surface. That pan is easy to remove, I'm having Baktash TIG weld this same notch into a brand new pan for me. This one was brased and completely cracked and leaked when the diff hit it ... I'm also adding extended bump stops that Dave Gore made me so it doesn't get hit again.



The upper pan was the huge (did I say huge?) PITA, you have to remove a couple dozen Allen bolts, two nuts that are under and behind the main crank pulley, remove multiple oil drain tubes, drive out the oil dipstick tube, then contort it around the oil pick up which is 3" directly over the diff. The upper pan is 5" thick and 3 1/2 feet long ... none of this was easy

For the pan, did you buy a used one for baktash? or get a new one? I am sure it will end up nice, they do awesome welding. What about adding a skid plate to protect the underside?

I bought a new aftermarket pan off eBay, they are relatively cheap and plentiful. These get hit by your diff because there isn't much clearance below, a skid plate would exasperate that. Going with an extended bump stop to keep the axle from hitting it, will loose a little articulation but it's better than all your oil
