FJ40 Decal Reference (1975-83)

Decal albums:
Looking for information about FJ40 decals and stickers to complete your restoration? Follow the active links above for albums of decal reference photos and associated information. Additional details on the reference follow. This is a work in progress, please post or PM comments, corrections and suggestions for improvement.

The decal album includes the following:
  • decal index – list of decals with image references and notes, including engine bay decals (A-Z) and interior/exterior decals (1-14)
  • engine bay layout – where the decals are located
  • engine bay images
  • engine bay decal images
  • interior/exterior decal images
The intent of the reference is to identify each decal and show where it is located and how it is oriented, including all decals/stickers: information, caution/warning, and component identification. Ideally the photos will show original decals in their original location. Currently, some of the photos are identified as placeholders (ph), pending a photo of the actual decal.

The decal photos are divided into engine bay and interior/exterior images. There is a layout of the engine bay with each decal location identified A-Z. Then photos of the decals in reference order. When there are several versions of a decal over the time period, the goal is to show each one.

After the engine bay decals are the interior and exterior decals. These decals are numbered. There is not a corresponding layout like there is for the engine bay since the location of these is more or less self-evident.

For the decals referenced, the photo description includes the date range(s). Many also include part number(s). The part number is either the decal part number if there is one, or the part number of the associated part.

Many thanks to Mud member @overton for use of engine bay and decal images from his Land Cruiser Nation web site.

Limitations

The reference is focused on decals, although it may include metal plate identifiers used for early parts like starters and distributors, and data plates. It also may include identifying stamps used on later components like blowers, heaters, radiators.

The reference is also limited to US spec vehicles. While I've no plans to go beyond that, the setup of the reference allows links to albums set up by others, if someone wants to develop an album of decals for non-US FJ40s.

Yes, the reference is focused on US spec FJ40s. My understanding is that many of these decals overlap with General spec 40s and with FJ45s. Will leave it to others to figure out and document the details.

Decal reference for 1978 FJ40s (US spec) is posted, see post #1 for the link. Missing a few examples, see post #2 for the list. Please post or PM additions and corrections.

PIO Decal - Port Installed Options Codes

Working on the 75-77 decal reference, which includes the PIO decal. Looks like this one needs to be added to the 78 reference as well.

Here's a stab at what these Port Installed Options (PIO) codes might mean. Based on info from PIO threads listed below.
  • 880 - rear heater
  • 842 - mud/snow tires
  • 811 - am radio
  • 859, 863 - other
77 FJ40 - nohuri - 880 811.jpg

The threads identify 9 vehicles with PIO codes, and some indicate how their 40 is equipped in the PIO or other threads. On some stickers, the option code is hard to read, indicated by a ? in the list below.
  • The rear heater is installed on the first 6 listed, and all 6 have the 880 option code.

  • The first 2 also have the am radio, and both have 811 as the other option code.

  • 842 as mud/snow tires is a guess. The 880 rear heater combines with 842 for 4 vehicles. Mud/snow and rear heat seem to be a logical combination. Mud/snow tires also appear as options frequently on window stickers.

  • 859 and 863 only appear once with no other info to indicate what these might be.
Most of the PIO decals list 1-2 options, while most window stickers list 4-5. So which are the port options and which are not? Besides those mentioned, Warn locking hubs, undercoating, and calif emissions requirements are also listed as options on some window stickers. Warn hubs and undercoating are assumed to be dealer options, while calif emissions is assumed to be a factory option.

9 vehicles, 19 option codes

Option Code counts:
  • 880 - 7 rear heater
  • 842 - 6 mud/snow tires
  • 811 - 4 am radio
  • 859 - 1 ?
  • 863 - 1 ?
Other info:
  • PIO decals seem to be limited to 1976-78, based on the examples, installed inside the glove box or on the inside of the glove box door.
  • The numbers on the sticker seem to follow the same order 863 842 880 811 859, this can be useful to help identify partially illegible codes
  • The option frequencies for 880, 842, and 811 are consistent with window sticker options for 1977-78 vehicles listed in the window sticker thread, rear heater(7), mud/snow tires(7), am radio(5).

Made In Japan Decal

To satisfy US import requirements, completed Land Cruisers were tagged with this decal to identify Japan as the country of origin. For such a widely used decal there are very few examples.

This 1975 FJ40 includes the decal on the driver sides, rear corner glass. (sloanstavern)

By 1983, the decal was located on the passenger side windshield and uses slightly different verbiage. (LandCruiserNation)

The decal also appears on replacement windshields. A newer sticker on this March 1973 FJ40.

Non-Catalyst Decal

The Non-Catalyst decal is located on the drivers door pillar, below the door stop. It appears on 1976-77 US spec FJ40 models. The decal includes information that supplements the passenger-side, under-hood Emission Control Information (Emissions Data) decal.

While the under-hood decal identifies what type of emission control systems are on the vehicle, the Non-Catalyst decal specifies that the vehicle does not use a catalytic converter.

An earlier version of this write-up indicated 1974-77 for the decal dates. Further research suggests 1976-77 instead. The EPA regulation that required the sticker was published June 30, 1975 and described in this July 16, 1975 press release.

According to the press release: "...all light duty vehicles will be required to bear a catalyst conformity statement on a separate label, or the statement may be included on the Department of Transportation label currently required for all imported vehicles. The joint DOT-EPA label or the separate EPA label will be affixed to the driver's doorpost, and will identify the vehicle as either non-catalyst (not subject to bonding), catalyst equipped and covered by a retrofit program (not subject to bonding), or catalyst equipped and not so covered (subject to bonding). The new labeling system, EPA says, will allow Customs officials to quickly determine which vehicles require bonding and which do not."

The Non-Catalyst decal also includes the vehicle model year, which should match the model year specified on the under-hood Emissions Data decal. (JayFJ802)

That changed in 1978 with the new format Emissions Data decal that includes Non-Catalyst. Revised EPA labeling regulations (section 86.078-35 Labeling) published September 25, 1978 allow the Non-Catalyst/Catalyst designation to be included on the under-hood Vehicle Emission Control Information sticker as an alternative to the separate doorpost sticker. Images of repro Non-Catalyst decals appear to include some anomalies; it is unknown whether the actual repro decals include these as well:
  • U.S.E.P.A in the original decal is rendered as U.S.E.R.A in the repro image.
  • The original decal includes the words “1976 model” on the same line; the repro image has “model” on the next line. The format used for the repro decal is consistent with the 1977 original, but not with the 1976 original.

Door Pillar Data Plate

The Door Pillar Data Plate is located on the drivers pillar (A-pillar) for US spec vehicles. The plate identifies the month and year of manufacture and also includes the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The month of manufacture and VIN are stamped into the front of the metal plate. The manufacture year and other information are printed onto the plate.

The door pillar data plate first appeared on 1969 model-year Land Cruisers to certify compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) that were the result of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966. The requirements for the data plate (“label”) are described in 49 CFR 567.4.

Original label requirements included the manufacturer name, VIN, month/year of manufacture and vehicle type (e.g., truck, MPV, bus, trailer). Later, requirements for Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) and Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) were added.

Attachment requirements for the label are described in §567.4(b): The label shall, unless riveted, be permanently affixed in such a manner that it cannot be removed without destroying or defacing it.

The door pillar data plate information is useful for:
  • Confirming the Vehicle Identification Number
  • Identifying original vehicle specifications/features/options using the manufacture month/year
  • Determining the correct replacement parts for the vehicle using the manufacture month/year
  • Distinguishing hardtop/factory soft top versions using GVWR/GAWR information

March 1969 – August 1969
An April 1969 plate. The first plates are quite different from later versions. These plates were used with 9-character VIN numbers (e.g., FJ4012345) exclusively. Plates were located above the door stop and positioned to be readable from inside the vehicle. (GRAutoGallery)
full

September 1969 - December 1971

In this version “Manufactured By” is fully spelled out in the first line and the lines are centered on the plate. Most of these plates have 9-character VIN numbers. The change from 9-character to 10-character VIN numbers occurred in mid-April 1971. (93jspec)

January 1972 - December 1974

The lines on this plate are left-aligned. Except for the manufacture month/year and compliance statement, information is presented in a Label: Value format where the colons are aligned. New information includes the GVWR and front-rear GAWR expressed in pounds: 4665 / 2120 - 2545. (sl10002001)

September 1980 – June 1982
The 17 character VIN numbers were implemented starting in September 1980. The plate format changed in that the “FJ40-” prefix was no longer printed on the plate. Additionally the 60023 left edge designation was replaced by 40-2 and what appears to be a part number, 74514-60024-, was added along the right, lower edge. This version appears to use a smaller font for most of the printed text, although the manufacture year is a larger, bold font. Fractions are expressed using separate characters (1/2) rather than a fraction symbol (½). (LandCruiserNation)

Door Pillar Data Plate Summary
full

The late model plates have an error. The 81-later USA Cruisers (FJ40 & FJ60) use a 15x6jj wagon wheel. Chrome on FJ60 LG, white on FJ40 & FJ60LV. Not a 15x5-½ as on earlier models.

FJ40 Fender/Firewall Data Plate Reference

See the FJ40 Fender/Firewall Data Plate Reference album for examples of fender/firewall data plates from 1961-83. This is a work in progress, please post comments, corrections, images of missing plates or better images of current examples.

The album includes example fender/firewall data plates from US spec 1961-83 primarily FJ40s. A few FJ45s since they use the same plates. Listed by model year for early plates. Plates are located and attached:
  • 61-6608 passenger-side firewall with screws
  • 6609-7708 passenger-side fender, see specific plate for screw/rivet attachment
  • 7709 passenger-side firewall with rivets.
1961. This black plate was also used for FJ25s. The 1 at the beginning of the frame number indicates the vehicle build year, which may be different from the Model year. The number at the beginning of the frame number was discontinued in 1965 and replaced with the brass tag.
full

Format change in 1962. Same information as the black plate, except Piston Displacement is now expressed in liters instead of cubic centimeters. TEQ logo appears on the plate.
full

Format changes sometime in 1965. The Type field no longer appears and the model code (e.g., FJ40L) now appears in the Model field instead of the year. The Engine No. field no longer appears and Bore, Stroke and Piston Displacement are now specified in inches/cubic inches instead of millimeters/liters.
full

Late 1968. Several format changes for this plate. Includes the wording "Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. hereby certifies that this vehicle conforms to all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards." This wording moves to the door pillar data plate in early 1969. Plate only includes Model, Engine Model, Piston Displacement and Frame No. information fields.
full

1970. This plate is located on the passenger side fender and attached with rivets. The content of the plate is emission control information and the Frame No. The emission control information would move to the under-hood sticker in 1972. The change to rivets is probably the result of a requirement that emission information be permanently attached.
full

By mid-72 the emission information is no longer on the plate. Plate is now attached with screws. The plate and plate format are identical to the 1965 plate.
full

Late 1974. Displacement in both cubic centimeters and cubic inches is included on this plate. Consequently "Piston Displacement" was shifted left to provide room. Bore and Stroke are specified in both millimeters and inches.
full

Early 1975. Significant format change in 1975. Bore and stroke no longer appear. New information includes the color/trim codes, transmission/axle codes, and plant code. Piston Displacement changed to reflect 2F engine.
full

Mid 1975. Another format change. This plate has the number 60151 and has two holes for attaching. Plant code is now printed on the plate instead of stamped. The number 0-4 appear at the right side of the Trans/Axle line. Although this plate is attached with rivets, some other 2-hole plate examples on the fender are attached with screws.
full

Early 1976. The plate number has changed to 60152. The 0-4 has changed to 0-12. This plate will be used until 1981.
full

The plate moves to the passenger-side firewall in 1978. Factory attachment from then on is always with rivets.
full

1981. New plate format to accommodate the 17-character VIN number. Plate number is 60340.
full

Effective 1 July 1982 the Toyota Motor Corporation was formed from the merger of Toyota Motor Company and Toyota Motor Sales Company. The plate was revised to reflect the new company name. TEQ logo no longer appears on the plate.
full

Couple notes on the early ones:

Not all FJ25’s came with the black plate. By 1959, some came with the style you have listed as a 1962. This curious use of two different VIN plates continued into 1961 FJ40 models.

@wscbill, thank-you for your research and efforts to compile and format all this.

Ditto. This is the kind of stuff that makes MUD the BEST resource.

Measure Of Engine Adjustment / Toyota Improved Combustion decal

There are relatively few original examples of early versions of this decal, and no examples of originals after 1973. If you have them, please post images of missing examples (66,70,74-78), or better images of existing examples. Images of repro decals are used for illustration, but repros may not be exact representations of the originals. Dates are estimates based on limited information provided. Additional examples will help to confirm.

This decal appears from at least 1962-78 on F135 through 2F engine value covers. It started as "Measurement of Engine Adjustment". The earliest example is from 1962.
full

Changing to "Toyota Improved Combustion System" in 1969. The last version was discontinued after 12/78. By that time, most of the information on this decal was also on the "Vehicle Emission Control Information" decal located under-hood on the passenger side.

Early versions were located on the driver side valve cover.

In 1968, the decal moved to the top of the valve cover, towards the back, facing the driver side.

1962-64. Includes the "Specific Gravity" line. Interesting typesetting on these early stickers. The double quotes preceding (EXHAUST) are positioned quite low. For the decimal values, the decimal point is sometimes located closer to the leading character (0.4, 0.5) other times closer to the following character (0.25, 1.27). The tilde characters (~) have varying lengths and different shapes. The values for the last two lines are sometimes left aligned, other times indented by varying amounts.

The parts catalog identifies 2 versions of the 2F decal. This is a repro decal, unclear which version.
