FJ40 cup holders - Give me some feedback please

I think 9" would be pushing the space and shift lever. I moved it back about 1" which means it will be closer to the center console and seat edges, but give you a little more space by the shifter. @ntsaint Want me to cut a two cup out or one cup out? What are you thinking.

I do like this one...

I like both designs as well. Out of curiosity, how does that Bose speaker sound while moving? I was going to look at that as an option instead of a radio because of my 24v system.

I think it is decent. Much better than some other speakers of similar size but lower quality. If you like loud music I would get something else. But it works for me.

The factory 4 speed location of the shifter does not hit cup holder Model 1. I think the model I am working on with a Bose speaker slot and two cup holders will be a tight fit. But Model 1, with 2 cup holders doesn't hit.
A couple of the pictures are with the gear shifter in a position extremely close (4th or reverse) to the cup holder to show there is ample space to shift. I will try and get the first 4 made and shipped Monday so they can give some feedback (good or bad) so we can move forward with confidence. Unfortunately my vehicle interior is removed, so the MUD community is helping me trouble shoot during this initial group buy goal of 10.

Here is the newest Model 1 picture. I will be cutting and shipping the first 4 this weekend. I will also be working on a model for the plastic consoles in 80-83 models that don't have the same seat frame and center console set up as the 72-78. Please keep sharing your thoughts so I can improve these designs.

Looks good. How about adding a flange to the front of the cup holder to rest on the tranny hump. That will give you some added support for those half gallon Big Gulps :)

@davegonz Currently I am making this out of 1/8" metal, so I don't think it needs support. One of my first prototypes was really thin and I thought about how to strengthen it:) I am thinking of my 4 year old standing on it and if it can handle it. Maybe when I get my fj40 put back together I can do some scientific research and development and see if my 4 year old can play in the 40 and bend it or not...

Update: I am trying to install a 12 volt marine grade cigarette plug in the model 1. And I have the design for a rear single drink holder. I haven't cut it out and bent it up yet. But I think it will be a great option for holding a drink and bolting it using existing hardware. Let me know what you think.

As soon as I have them cut, installed and painted I will post pictures.

Roll bar drink holder ready for paint! Thanks for all the suggestions in this thread. I had to make some changes to get the cup to fit without interfering with the jump seat and the rear quarter panel edge and be able to be used on the front of the roll bar and the side of the roll bar. Here is a pic of what I made tonight that I will be selling soon.

Pics of completed ones! I have some of the initial ones ready to ship. If you have suggestions or changes I can make let me know. I still don't have a good idea or solution to do one on the dash like a couple people suggested.

Here is a model for the 80-83 model fj40's I am shipping today. Any other suggestions?

How about a plate that will fit where the ash tray goes? The chrome trim plate would stay and then a plate that fits the opening installed with the existing two sheet metal screws that holds the trim plate in. Then you could bolt the cup holder arm to that.

All dashes I believe have the ash tray and who uses that for anything other than loose change?
