I suggest sending it along - who knows, there may be more than one split in Texas and/or New Mexico. I hear there are some in Utah who are anxious to participate. If there's a split in Texas, there could also be a split up through the Four Corners via New Mexico if any MUD members in the Pagosa Springs/Durango area are willing to get a baton up near Moab.Unfortunately fellas Alan was not able to make the trip up from Texas to Hot Springs this weekend due to some serious back pain. We're working on another plan for a meet up with his brother possibly taking his place in the drive up.
I'll keep you guys posted as I hear more from Alan.
Also, what should we do with the surrogate baton?
are we still stalled out
I would argue that the baton(s) are the glue--they are what we all go for--to connect and pass along--you will meet folks you only talk to electronically, until the baton is passed--then you REALLY meet them-friendships are formed, memories are made-never to be forgotten--I knew that Alan was going to have to cancel due to his lower back issue. I'm sorry I couldn't pick up the slack, but I have a charity event that I volunteer to work on this weekend every year.
There is no hurry and it will eventually get to DFW. Since we had Dec 11 weekend planned and it got canceled, Alan and I went camping with his son (my nephew) here in Texas. I used it as a shake down run for my 40 and Alan drove his 60 series since it was more comfortable than his 40 and roomier. We had a great time! I will post pics. That is kind of the spirit of this trip. The primary reason is to get these old cruisers out and use them and create memories. The batons are secondary and we will make it happen soon.

I just finished reading through the 12-page Birfield/wheel bearing grease thread in the 80-Series tech forum. I guess I'll be heading over tp the local NAPA store tomorrow to pick up some Valvoline Palladium grease. When I checked my front differential fluid level this afternoon the level was fine, but the gear oil was "blended" with grease. Plus, I noticed weeping at the knuckle housing. So I guess I'll be getting my hands dirty on some axle work before the batons get to New Mexico. I'll have to check the Marlin Crawler website to see if the heavy duty inner axle seals I just bought for my '86 FJ60 project vehicle will work in the '76 FJ40 axle.
While I'm at NAPA I'll also pick up an air filter (FIL 2131) - I have no record of replacing it recently, so it's time for a change.
And some 5W bulbs for the instrument cluster - I can barely see the gauges once it gets dark.
After I meet @POTATO LAUNCHER in Romeroville, NM we'll head to Santa Fe. From there I'll run one or more batons around locally with some other FJ40 owners in the area before heading west towards Arizona. If the batons split early (in Texas?) I think @AZOKIE was willing to meet someone in southern New Mexico for a southern route into Arizona. If not, tentatively I was going to meet @AZOKIE in west-central New Mexico (Quemado), and hopefully @Living in the Past in the same area for a second baton. I can get one, two, or three baton(s) well into western New Mexico, including possibly another split to get the third (surrogate) baton up towards the Four Corners and eventually Utah. But I need someone from southwestern Colorado who's willing to meet me in or around Farmington and run it up towards Moab (maybe on the way to Cruise Moab?).what's the plan for getting across Arizona ?
Stickers were in the brief case.
Dang Todd! I'm sorry, I wish I'd known, I would've grabbed one for you.Yeah, we had to do our leg before the briefcase was officially transferred and therefore no stickers. We had a substitute baton on our leg.
