Planning my attack on the fuel system since my tank is leaking and I’m replacing it. Looking at the schematics I realize my truck has an evaporative fuel vapor setup. Going to diesel, should I eliminate this?
Just curious, on my 1981 troopy the fuel tank is different then on the 40 or 43's.

It has a thick cover plate under it and a convenient drain plug.

Same on yours?

That is what I would do. On the other hand I doubt leaving it hooked up would cause any problems.
My only thinking is the lines all look pretty old and it’s one less think to leak. I’m not actually sure where the leak is in my tank, so there’s a chance it could be that. It’s something on the top.

I think it does, but I haven’t investigated it too much yet
 
Did I miss what was wrong with the 2f to necessitate swap? As 3B owner in mine I love the diesel just curious if something forced your hand to do it?
Nothing wrong with it (well other than it won’t start without spray after sitting overnight). I already had the 12HT and I want to swap it.

I thought all the OEM tanks had a drain in them??
aftermarket ones don't have a drain in them
also thought OEM had the skid plate mount that the straps went around to hold it all in place
 
Tell you what, this has created quite the pickle- almost had everything free and then it just bent:

absolutely my fault. the cylinder was jammed up against the bumper and I was raising it more, so it was experiencing a side lot instead of straight down. Still, a probably 850lb drivetrain bending a 6,000lb cylinder doesn't seem right!
 
if the lift was being pulled forward into the bumper as you were lifting, the ram is not made for side loading, once it starts to bend then adds more side loading if being pulled making things worse
 
So more good progress today. Got the transmission and transfer case pressure washed and cleaned up decently, then pulled the bearing retainer and replaced the input seals. Man they were so brittle, it’s no wonder the bellhousing was full of gear oil.

I also got the old fuel tank out. It did indeed have the drain plug which was handy. I couldn’t find any obvious holes where it was leaking other than around the filler neck appeared to possibly be cracked. I’ll say that tank is really jammed in there. I had to use a big pry bar to get it loose. The rubber fuel lines are all very brittle so excellent time to replace them all.

My lift has seriously been worth every penny just for this project. This would take twice as long if I was crawling on my back constantly!

Plan for tomorrow is to pickup new fuel lines, get all of that replaced and the vapor lines capped and tank in. Then I’m going to drop my driveshafts off as both have nice big dents in them.

Then hopefully I can get the transmission and engine mated up and HOPEFULLY take a stab at getting it sitting in the engine bay. Fingers crossed!

Are you going to do anything with the clutch?
The clutch on my 12ht was pretty much brand new, so reusing that.

I’m going to take the bellhousing off this 2f though and use it to put my h55f in my 40. It DEFINITELY needs a new clutch
 
New fuel tank is in and new soft lines are run. Man it was 10x easier getting the new one in than the old one out. The old one must have swelled over time or something. Going to get the motor and trans together and stab it in this afternoon. Hopefully.

Have you already got a classic plate on it, or plating it out of state? I assume you know, but just in case the 12HT will invalidate the import exemption & Colorado won't let you do smog tests with that in there if you haven't already got a collector plate on it. Just something to think about if you don't have a plan already.
 
Can’t believe it, but it’s in! Man it fought me hard for the last 6 inches or so. Thought I was getting away without pulling the fenders, but the drivers side had to move. The battery holder was in the way on the passenger side and of course throughout all of this, the last bolt holding it on rounded off.

Then the steering gear had to come off. Very clear this is RHD engine ha! Tried to get the Pittman arm off and of course my puller broke and it didn’t come off. Had to cut the steering column, which I was going to do anyways, but didn’t feel great about doing it with the engine dangling.

Then my damn engine leveler was interfering with the chain, so had to cut the twist handle off, again didn’t love having to do it with the motor dangling, but it worked out ok.

Can’t believe it’s in though. I bought the drivetrain three years ago and have been dreaming and planning it out for that whole time. I’ve still got a ton of work left to do, but man what a dream come true. The boys even got to watch the final moment after school.

Best engine toyota has ever made. I'd love one in my 43 one day. You're going to love it. I missed it: did you decide to go H55 or 41 behind this beast?

I had one I was going to put in my LX back in Australia many years ago but Marv wanted it. He talked me out of it while he was staying with us in Adelaide one time. Seeing it in your engine bay sure makes me wish I had it now!
