Well I didn’t know how bad I needed it till I saw it. Introducing my new to me 1981 FJ45 Troopy. Thanks @wytrooper

I’ve had a 40 for a few years and love it to death, even have a 12HT/H55/splitcase ready to drop in, but something was nagging me about it being a bit tight in the rear seat for both my boys and our full size dog, so enter the solution! When I bought our 40, we only had one kid, and now there’s two!

This truck is in really really nice and very original shape. Initial impressions are very good. The 2F runs very well. You can tell it has about 15 more hp than my 1F, though the absolute game changer is the H41 transmission. Wow. Synchro first gear and gear spacing that actually suits a low powered engine! It’s transformative!

For now I’m not sure what if anything other than driving it is in the cards. I really thought I’d immediately want to drop in my 12HT, but I’m not so sure. It just seems a shame to pull such a good running motor. And the transmissions seriously makes all the difference in the world. It’s awesome buying this basically having a practice run with my 40 knowing what works and what’s not worth it.

Currently has drums all around, and I’m sure I’ll eventually swap to discs. I’ve never driven a full drum vehicle and I’m impressed with the stopping power. I have hydroboost on my 40, and I’d challenge anyone to find a better stopping 40, but it was a real headache to get setup right and is probably overkill.

Manual steering is likely the first thing to change. Overall it steers nice, but man it’s been a while since I drove a manual steering 40 series and parking lots are a workout! Can’t even imagine what wheels will be like on a slow tight trail. I did 80 series on my 40 and it’s fantastic.split between that or spending the $ to keep it original and finding an OEM setup.

Also probably looking at bucket seats upfront. The bench is in solid shape, but I’m 6’3 and would really appreciate some more legroom. Plus I love the locking console and armrest in my 40.

Final upgrade I’m thinking about is the rear axle. I have a full float rear with locking hubs in my 40, including a cable locker. I want to wheel this, so a locker is a must, but I also plan to flat tow it behind my camper and the locking hubs are a dream for that, if not totally necessary. Looking at the conversion setup from front range Offroad, and then doing an e locker, and maybe a matching one on the front. We’ll see!

Also undecided what I’ll do with my 40. Likely will sell it as I just don’t see it getting much use now that this is here and fits us so much better. Not in a rush thankfully.

nice buy. glad it worked out.
you can also post up in the 45 specific section

I loved my HJ47. I had it 15+ years. GREAT camping rig. I took it on Black Bear, Opher, Engineers: everywhere I took my 40. It's very capable.

I swapped in a brand new 350 Vortec, H55F, 3:73 gears, FJ60 power steering, air conditioning. It was comfortable at 80 mph and fantastic off road. Skids are essential however to protect those LONG flanks.

Use her in good health and enjoy your family's time with her.

Swapped over my wheels and tires from my 40- nomad 16x7s with a fresh set of falken at4w s. So much smoother at speed than the as installed BFGs. This is the best photo I’ve got for now:

Definitely. I’ve had a set on my truck for a couple of years and love them. Frankly I don’t know how BFG not only still sells the KO2, but also charges a premium! I’ve ended up with several sets over the years and they never balance and are so stiff.

That thing is beautiful

Tires are like oil for me. I want to decide, “this is the one” and then move on to more complex decisions in life such as Gose or Dunkleweiss tonight?

I have just put on my 3rd set of tires on my 210,000 miles tundra, all BFG AT KO’s. They served me well there and are on both LC’s now. They do feel stiff on the LC’s though.

Damn you people whose opinion I value…

Dunkleweiss for sure.

Hope that helped.😑

As I stare at this beauty in my shop along with my 12HT/h55f splitcase setup, I’m really starting to wonder just how useful the h55 would be over the h41. Basically the exact same gear set minus overdrive. Softop tops aren’t exactly ideal over about 50-55mph given the noise, and I’ve got little intention of a hard top. Man it sure would make the 12ht fit easier- I’m looking at the fuel tank and seeing it would definitely interfere with the splitcase parking brake when moved 3.5in back… I’m sure I could find someone willing to cut and weld a small notch in it but dang, maybe just not worth it given how well the h41 suits the 2f! Also wouldn’t have to engineer a cross member, change any driveshaft lengths, change any shifter holes, parking brake cables etc.

Decisions decisions

The H42 in my 40 with the 3.70 gearing is at times better than the H55 with 4.11 in the 62.
Vastly different vehicles but the 4 speed is a much more relaxed experience.

Occams Razor logic: I used the rubber overdrive option w/3:70’s and a taller tire. IMHO it was the least obtrusive cost effective solution. Pro’s and Con’s to each solution.

Yeah it’s hard to know until I drive it I guess. I’m still blown away how much nicer the 4spd is than the J30 in my 40.

There are times I wished I had lower gears in my 40 Offroad, so that’s my one big hesitation is if I end up rehearing in the future will I then wish I had the overdrive at 55? I have no issues drilling holes and modifying my 40, but this ones so nicely original! Decisions decisions.

The H55 is a strange beast. In my opinion, the gear spacing is a bit nonsensical. With the 4:11 gearing in the 62, 1st is way low and almost useless for regular driving, you get about halfway across an intersection before shifting into 2nd. 2-3-4 are almost normal but 5th is not much of an overdrive beyond 4th.

I realize this is very far from scientific and again, not a direct comparison, but the 4-sp spacing just makes so much more sense.

Also, my man @Chungas Revenge has a point with the rubber OD. I’ve swapped my 33 KO2 with my 32 KO2 tires around on the trucks and that one inch makes a difference. The 33’s are back on the 40 but for the summer trip up to Colorado they were in the 62.
