Update

I went to Cruiserdrew's place once I was down in Cali to slap on my skid plate. I found some rubbing on the crossmember with my output flange and clearanced that and then just welded the plate up to the tranny crossmember and the rear one that I clearanced. The skid stayed put the whole time but I found rubbing with the tcase so I notched that out recently. I still have plans to make a final skid plate. One of these days it will just come to me, I'm just still waiting.

Next adventure:

I got off of work and went to start the truck to leave and it wouldn't start. It would spin over fine and even stumble once in a while but it just wouldn't light. These mechanical diesels are pretty simple so that makes it easy to troubleshoot. I checked filters, primed, bled supply lines, bled injectors, tested 12V to the cut off solenoid. After I had exhausted all but one idea the last one was the fuel cut off solenoid itself. On other no start situations I had checked this before and it had never been a problem. It's not the easiest to get to but once I got it out, it looked like there might have been a metal fleck that was keeping the plunger from moving smoothly. With the plunger down it would block fuel flow, but with the stubble once in a while when turning it over it seemed like fuel was getting through. Perhaps it was slightly open but not near enough to support combustion needs.

Anyways I removed the plunger, reinstalled the solenoid body and it started right up. I have the choke cable hooked up to my manual cut off lever so I can turn off the engine by pulling the cable. I ran this way for a couple of weeks and finally got a replacement solenoid. For application purpose since this is a Bosch injection pump and the early VWs diesels use the same solenoid I looked for one in the 80's year range. Napa wanted $37 for it but didn't have it and the lady called an import place two blocks away who had it for $24 so I happily went there.

PA120112.JPG

After I got it all back together I found it leaked around the solenoid. I ended up taking the rear IP bracket off and modifying it so I could get to the solenoid easier with a wrench instead of vice grips. I took a corner off the bracket.

PA130135.JPG

Since the bracket was off I just tightened the solenoid down; it wasn't tight enough. I started the engine to test before I put everything back together this time to see if I fixed the leak and it didn't leak so I started putting the bracket back on. I'll have to see the next time I need to get to the solenoid if my clearanced bracket makes a difference on access.

Almost caught up, just a couple more things to document.

Update

I was laying some concrete a month ago and my backyard neighbor called me through the bushes. I passed through the other side and he started out by saying: "You've got a 4wd and are into that offroading stuff right?"
Me: "Yes, I like to play in the mud."
Then he points to our feet where a winch mounted on a winch plate are and asked: "Do you have any use for this thing?"
Me: "Sure do."
Him: "I took it off my ***p because I thought it was ugly, it came on it when I bought it and I don't even know if it works. Do you want it?
I looked at it and it was a Warn. Ironically I've looked for winches here and there but nothing serious. I said: "Well, how much?"
Him: "Oh just take it, I don't need it and it's probably a boat anchor. I hooking it up to a battery and it just clicked so just take it, I just want it out of my yard."
Me: "You sure you don't want anything for it?"
Him: "Nope, it's yours."
Me: "Thank you very much!"

So I heaved it over to my yard and put it in the shop to investigate later. It's a Warn X8000i with cable, power leads, and a remote on a ***p winch plate. After the concrete job I was interested in my new toy so I decided to disassemble it and see what was going on inside. It was rusty so I separated the planetaries, cleaned them and regreased them. You can see in the pic that the set screw for the selector lever has a broken housing that I'll need to figure out a fix for but once clean and full of good grease the reduction housing spins smoothly.

I took the cable off the drum, cleaned up the drum and painted it. The motor is shot, at least it is after I got done trying to remove the brush assembly because they were frozen.

PA120129.JPG

Here's the winch mount. I'm not sure if I'm going to cut this up and weld it into my bumper or just sell this and make my own winch mount out of some plate.

PA120130.JPG

Warn sells a motor for close to $200. I found a replacement at dbelectrical.com for much cheaper. I am almost finished with a little fence project for the :princess: so I rewarded myself and ordered one. It should be here later this week. I know this is only an 8000lbs winch but I'll just get a snatch block and use that for the serious pulls, besides, it was FREE!

I've also been trying out some new additive to my fuel and I've been running this all summer. It's called OptiLube XPD. So far I like it. A gallon mixes with ~500 gallons and it does all that diesel fuel stuff like lubricate, reduces gelling, increases cetane rating, blah, blah.... The main reason I'm running it is for the lubricating aspect to keep my IP healthy. It rated very well on the famous fuel lubricity test circulated on the net. I do notice a slight bump in power and a ~1mpg increase in mileage. It also quiets down the IP comparable to running Bio, just not as much as Bio does.

that is the same winch I have on my 60 truggy, works great other than the in solenoids are acting up after a couple of pulls either loaded or not. but that is a cheap and simple fix.

I have pulled plenty of j**ps, nissans and chevy's out of ditches with my 8k warn winch. I don't think you will have an issue with yours!

I ran across this about an alternative solenoid. If mine are shot I'd be interested in trying one of these out.

Albright solenoid - Pirate4x4.Com Bulletin Board

That is the same one I read about as well just couldnt remember where I found it, I think there is a thread on our forum in the winching section talking about them as well. :meh: Ill probably give em a shot.

So far the only time I've needed a winch was on the far left side of waterfall at TSF when we first tested your SOA. I'm sure once I get it mounted up I'll find new reasons I've needed it all along.

I TRY and AVOID finding reasons to use it... but it is so useful!

I seem to remember something about that, too! It was a fun day! Funny story, about 3 weeks ago, a co-worker e-mailed me a link to a youtube video asking if that was my Land Cruiser. It turned out that it was the video from that day wheeling.

Good job on the build so far. Its always fun to log on and see all the updates.

I cut out a face plate for a mount and attached it to the steering wheel.

I was really happy with how this was turning out, to be able to keep my hands on the wheel and control my tranny. The problem I ran into was trying to figure out how to get the cable to wind and unwind when I turned the wheel.

boots4,
you are trying to make a clockspring! They are on everything nowadays.
They are simply a coil connector for steering wheel controls & airbag.

I bet you could use a GM or Toyota clockspring and modify it to fit behind your steering wheel so that you can retain the clever steering wheel control you made.

They are inexpensive and a little time in a breaker yard, you could find something that would work.

They all look like this:

A little wheeling

FirstToy you're right, clock springs are what handle that challenge in the newer vehicles. I had to replace one in my last truck so I had thought of it but didn't go any further than that. I'll take a look at some the next time I'm in the junkyard to see if there is a close match to the dimensions.

This is from this summer when I wanted to test some changes.

Then after Dusy and after Cruise the Woods we had a mellow trip hosted by another club that we (my club) was invited too. Dirtgypsy and I packed our families and caravaned out for the day out to Bend OR. The group had been there since Friday but we could only make it for their Sunday run. We got up early in the morning and met up with the group assembled for Sunday.

There was an instant grandma in the group she kept my daughter busy.

It really was a mellow run. I didn't lock into 4wd once. It was rather dusty though especially since I was in the rear.

Beautiful scenery.

The next trip planned is our club's Christmas tree run in Dec. If the weather holds we may end up with snow this year to play in.

Great pics of your trip to Central Oregon!! I showed my wife the waterfall pic and her first question was "where is it" (she loves waterfalls). My quess, before scrolling down to the rest of the pics, was somewhere between Bend and Three Creeks Lake as I seem to remember seeing one marked on one of my maps of that area. After scrolling down I'm more convinced of my guess since the last three pics look like Broken Top, only from an angle that I'm not familiar with. Just guessing I'd say you were a little bit south and east of Broken Top, Three Creeks Lake, and Tam McAurther Rim. Beautiful pics and beautiful country!! Great place for a laid-back family outing.

Other than this sign that shows the name of the waterfall, I couldn't tell you much about where we were. First time we've been out that way and since I was following I didn't have to worry about navigating so the mental tracking software was turned off. Hope the pic helps.
