Ive had my 95 80 for just about a year now. I have a engine knock on start up till it builds oil pressure then it goes away. Only other time you hear it is at really high RPM. My cruiser only has 150k miles on it with the head gasket just being done at 145k miles. I'm looking for some guidance on what the issue could be, parts I need and cost of having it repaired at a shop. Thanks in advance.

Did something happen that caused you to have the head done or was that a PM activity?

Can you post up a video of the noise?

Is it more of a light clackity-tickety clackity-tickety or a KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK ??

Have you asked the previous owner (or the shop that did the work) if it knocked before he did the head gasket or if water had gotten into the oil before the head gasket was replaced?

How long does it take to build oil pressure, 1-3 seconds, 15 seconds, longer?

If the noise is a loud knocking consider collecting a sample of your (used) engine oil and sending it to Blackstone Laboratories for an Engine Oil Analysis, that might give you some information ie: increased wear metal levels.

What oil viscosity and filter are you using? Very important to use either the Toyota filter or maybe a top tier filter brand like Mobil 1 IME.

i can take a video, it did not knock before the head gasket was done. takes 2-3 seconds to build pressure and noise is gone.

Did you do anything to the power steering pump when the head work was done?

I dont know, head gasket was done by the previous owner
One thing that would be much better, and is fairly common, is a bungle installing the power steering gear. It can be the cause of many knock noises. Is there any way to find out if this was opened up when the head was done?

Whenever a question like this arises, my first inclination is to request facts. in other words, remove the oil pressure sending unit, screw in a mechanical pressure gauge fitting. Then put the mechanical pressure gauge on the windshield and start up the engine, then see what's happening. Make a video of this if you have to then post that up on this thread for more evidence-based help.

You can rent this from any of the auto parts store.

This is more likely to be a constant noise though isn't it?
Couldn’t tell you, I’ve just seen a lot of knock noises turn out to be this, through the forums. Not had it personally. But I’d be inclined to agree with you.

It’s a aftermarket filter not from Toyota.
If it's white, it's not right.

WIX filters are known to kill these engines.
Napa gold are the same.

Swap it out ASAP.

Don't even need to drain the oil.

Ok I still have one of the big original filters I will swap on it. Toyota dealership in town said they went to a smaller one now, anyone ever have issues with the smaller replacement oil filter?

The 95+ calls for the YZZD3 filter and that's what I use all the time. It's the small one.

No issues.

I have a ‘95 Series 80. On an initial start, there is often a metallic knock that lasts a few seconds. I recorded two of them a day apart.

I recently had a LC specialist shop perform an OEM engine swap, so it’s completely refurbished. I would venture I’ve put 1500 miles on it since the swap. I’ve received suggestions it could be that the starter motor mount/gear needs to be shimmed (I have no idea what I’m talking about btw), not using OEM Toyota oil filter, a stuck valve? Please have a listen and I would appreciate any input.

Also, a IH8Mud process/culture question…. Should I have posted this question as a new thread?

It could be any number of things but I don't think your starter needs shimmed. Try higher octane fuel, maybe heavier oil, and lastly it could be something like piston slap, or timing tensioner, etc. Any number of things.
