Early Box Heaters

Well, Destin and I have the same unit. I'm thinking we should compare vin notes; I bet they floated across on the same boat.

Mine has had a ghetto mod though, which leaves me wondering how it should be, so that I can get it back to stock. The two screws hold the plate in place, and I can slide it up and down. Should the plate be inside the housing, or is it alltogether different?

hey man!

mine has a brown metal flap that hinges at the top , that you can open to let heat out the front

( brown flap hinges at top and opens, i can take better photos later )

Does yours have the flap under that metal sheet that was screwed in?
It might have broke down the road, and the PO might have screwed that metal bit on as a fix :D

Let us know what is underneath :)
 
Thanks! Nothing behind it other than the fan. I can feel where the old flap attached though. As booty fab as it it, it actually works pretty well. The 63 has better heat from that little box than my 55:doh:. When I close the door all the way, the redirect pipe up to the windshield does a great job of keeping heat on the glass. It's acually the best rig for me to drive when it's -30. :eek:

At some point one of the owners had some metal skills and cared. The door flap, and particularly the dash vent covers are pretty solid evidence that somebody actually used the rig, or at least planned to.

I may hinge it when I get to paint, but for now; it works. :D
 
I know this doesn't classify as a box heater but still it Toyota and a heater. Saw this puppy on e-bay. 1965 gas fed heater. From the description it says it's Toyota out of a sports. How cool would that be in a 25/40

Just don't forget to leave it on...it may drain your tank ;)
 
are there any part numbers on that thing? labels? .... i love that ODD stuff :)
 
what heater is this? part two

since the other thread is closed, i'll start a new one. assuming it's a heater...haven't really had time to tear into it. since it's a softtop and there are the remains of a fan on the dash, i kind of figure it's not an ac unit;)

Instead of starting a new thread PM Jim (Cruiser_Nerd). I'm sure he can open the old thread and add your post to it.:idea:

Sure it's just a heater. Look for the water lines on the engine of the firewall. By the location of the heating coil guessing the vent was opened on the cowl so that outside could be used to defrost the windshield.
 
my google searching has turned up nothing on this heater. i'm at a loss. on the positive side, i did find out the bladeless fan motor on the dash is a bakelite rubber bladed unit. just can't find a rubber blade and replacement power cord at an affordable cost:rolleyes:
 
ok, still can find nothing on this heater. pighead thinks we should take it out. it is enormous and funky looking. can always add the little vintage air heater that rustnailjustin on pirate used if i want a heater. it's smaller than oem heaters and supposedly puts out better. anyone think i should keep it?

I think that is the same heater that is in the '64 (and yes it still smells in there) :)
 
Lines up perfectly / HEATER REPLACEMENT FOR EARLY FJ40

Hello you guys,,,,,,,,,,I noticed Destin shows a pic of the old Model 556 Hupp Heater. I think that is what I was seeing in his pic. Anyway, I have that one in my 1962 FJ40. Because they do not make that core anymore ( mine is still good though ) I decided to replace my heater with the Meradyne 8030-12V. Cost is about $215. Because I am restoring the cruiser completely I decided to go all new on the heater so that I give whoever buys the cruiser nothing to worry about. The key to this new heater is that the " in-out " lines are identical to the old Hupp 556 so NO new holes have to be cut. Also the heater studs line up perfectly like the old one as well.
