Downey 22 Gallon Fuel Cells Becoming Available Again

I sell the tanks in my ebay store, they are not presently listed since I have been out of tanks for over a year. Once listed again there will be complete description, and photos showing all the parts included. Basically the tank, mounting strap kit, complete recessed fuel filler neck/cap/hose/clamps, and all of the aluminum top plate fittings/gasket/hardware, tank is totally complete without sending unit or fuel pump (where you have zillions of pump/sender choices). The Downey installation instruction sheets are actually here on Mud under the Downey Off Road link.
Hey Jim,
I have a 1971 FJ40 project that I picked up partially complete. The previous owner sold the project with either a Con-Ferr tank or one of your tanks. Is there a simple way to tell the difference between the two? The P.O. had installed an in-tank pump, but I don’t have that receipt so I'm not sure if it's compatible with the FiTech EFI I'm installing so I may have to pull the cover on the fuel tank to see what the pump is and if it's compatible... If so, I'd need a new gasket and it looks like you sell both varieties. Once I determine which tank it is - where will I find your store?
Thanks.
Jake

Con Ferr tanks were steel, my Downey tanks are nylon, both are 22 gallon, both have the lower rear side slanted upward for better departure angle (shape of my custom aluminum skid plates). My tank lab tested stronger than the steel tanks, pressure that ripped open a steel tank merely dented my tank (no puncture). Plus my tanks have no welded seams, and will never rust- - -easy deal. Probably easiest to merely install a fuel pressure gauge to test pressure of your pump. Carb would have needed about 5 psi, TBI fuel injection would have needed about 15 psi, and I believe the Sniper and FiTech work on about 65 psi ???. Easiest to deal with me here on Mud, I merely send PayPal invoices to people rather than dealing with my ebay store (and their many charges).

Hi Jim,
I may be having a venting problem with my Downey fuel cell. I ran a roll over fuel vent up as high as I could get it under the body of the FJ40 and a vented fuel filler kneck but the truck is slow to accept fuel and it ends up coming back out the filler kneck. The filler line from the filler kneck to the tank has some tight turns but nothing too crazy... Any trouble shooting suggestions would be appreciated.

Disconnect the vent line at the tank and try to fill it if you don't think the filler is the issue..

"The filler line has some tight turns but nothing too crazy" is an oxymoron. This is likely your issue. It would help if you posted a photo of the filler hose.

Make a block to drive up on with the wheel nearest the fill port. 2x6-1' with a 2x6x8" screwed on top. This will provide 3" of lift to help the gas go down the hole - see if that helps. Water wet paper elements in a filter don't pass gas, might easily block air flow in a vent.

I have the same issue with my Downey tank. I ran the vent as high as possible in the wheel well with a homemade carbon filter. I’ve found that certain nozzles work better than others and there’s a local station that drops the front of the vehicle a couple inches which helps it vent. Holding the nozzle at the 9:00 position so it’s shooting in sideways…. Just realized this sounds nuts, but it works.
I put the fill at the rear but tried to keep all the bends less than 90 degrees. I had originally ran the vent line up to the engine compartment but there were some low spots that held fuel and blocked the vent.

I’m actually running two vents. The one near the fill on the right side, and the other off the fuel pump on the left side. That one is also routed into the right wheel well but isn’t shown in the picture.

Are these fuel tanks still available? I'm looking to carry 30gal of fuel for an upcoming trip, in addition to coolers and everything else, so an aux tank seems the most logical option, but I do not see any place to purchase, nor anything saying @Downey and all his products are closed? I have plenty of gerry cans to do this, but I would need 4 and that's either a lot of weight on the roof or tire carrier.

Thanks!
Clark

I wanted one too but Jim has stopped making them. I went with the Aerotanks one. Great guys, clean shop, Made in the USA and you could set an aircraft carrier on it. Here's my thread on it: UPDATE: Tank Received! Mark, do you have any more fuel tanks?

Went looking for your site and didn’t spot it. I know you primarily use a phone (probably rotary dial).
