Hey everyone, can anybody tell me how to get the 75 fj40 cigarette lighter out of the dash. it stopped working and cant figure out why. The lighter itsself works in my other cruiser so its got to be the dash mount...Everything else works fine. Oh and is there an inline fuse for it or just the fuse in the fuse block. Any help would be great. Thanks.\\\

Mike

It should be a fuse in the fuse block. You can use a multi-meter or a trouble light to test the ground all around the sides and the power at the back-center.

Mine is shorted somewhere in that circuit and it blows the fuse as soon as I plug one in. I have never bothered to chase it down. It's the only circuit in my rig that doesn't work. :crybaby:

The back of the lighter is a threaded sleeve. You unscrew the part of the lighter that is behind the dash from the part that goes through the front of the dash.

The grounding of the lighter is made through the contact of that threaded rear sleeve with the back side of the dash. That's a common problem; poor ground contact where the lighter goes through the dash.

Pull the ashtray and you should be able see/get at the lighter.

Here are the two pieces of the lighter assembly. The front section goes into the dash then the shell slides over it from the back and screws on to tighten it up.

I replaced the factory cigarette lighter with one that has a standard 1/4" tab for both power and ground. I also used a greenly punch to add a second one.

bsevens, where did you find your cig lighter ports?

I just did this so I'll write-up the steps:
  1. Disconnect battery
  2. Remove ashtray (undo 2 screws)
  3. Use the ashtray space as an access hole, reach behind the lighter and disconnect 2 wires
  4. From behind the dash, twist on the cylinder sleeve for the ashtray, and rotate it in the counterclockwise direction to back it out
  5. Once the sleeve is off, the lighter will pop off from the front of the dash

@Racer65 thanks for this write up. I took mine apart because I have no juice when I test it. My 2005 tester light (not multimeter) shows juice at stereo wires but nothing when I put ground on dash or cigarette lighter and the hot wire at the back of the lighter.

Also, mine only seems to have one wire coming out of it.

Either your 20 Amp Lighter fuse is bad, or you have a wire cut. If the fuse is bad, two other things won't be working: The Inspection Light socket and the Dome Light.

@Coolerman I checked the wiring diagram and saw what you said. I tried to test my inspection light in glove compartment but my tester is an alligator clip for ground and a pointer. I did not get circuit there.

I don't know where my dome light is. Will work on it.

I ordered some replacement fuses as well as butt connectors.

Does the 1974 cigarette lighter have an in line fuse?

Basically it seems that the paint on the dash was preventing the lighter from grounding well.

I basically took a file and removed some paint which seems to have helped

One strange thing though is that there is power to the lighter and the dome light even when the key is not in the ignition.

Do you think this has been rewired incorrectly?
